Now Accepting Pre-K Apps
Little People Pre-K & Learning Center is now accepting Pre-K
applications for the 2007-2008 school year. This FREE program
is available for children who will be 4 years old on or before Sept.
1, 2007. Come sign up now. Space is limited. We also offer a
non-state funded 3-year-old program with limited spaces available.
Children enrolled in our 3-year-old program are guaranteed a slot in
our 2008-2009 Pre-K program.
Water Report Available
City of Fort Valley Water Quality Report for the year 2006 is
available upon request from the Utility Commission. Every com
munity water system is required to provide a Consumer Confidence
Report, also called a Water Quality Report, to its drinking water
customers by July 1 each year. Additionally, the report can be found
at www.fvutil.com <file://www.fvutil.com>.
Project WINGS Sign-Up
The Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) announces
the 2007 Wildlife Incentives for Non-Game and Game Species
(Project WINGS) sign-up, which will run until July 15, 2007.
Project WINGS is a rights-of-way management program developed
to create a new wildlife habitat along electrical transmission and gas
lines. Grants are determined by the amount of rights-of-way to be
managed with payments of $50 per acre (10 acres maximum). To
request an application please contact the NRCS at (478) 956-6490.
Picnics Postponed
The Promotions Committee of Fort Valley Main Street/Downtown
Development Authority has voted to suspend its series of Picnics in
the Park during the hot summer months. At last year’s six-month
series of picnics, attendance was down significantly through June,
July and August. The picnics will resume on September 27 with
music provided by local legend Bruce Brookshire. They will contin
ue on October 25 and November 15. Join us again when the weather
cools for a relaxing lunch in historic Fincher Park from noon until
1:30 in downtown Fort Valley!
Memorial Bricks
Bricks are on sale to complete the Memorial Plaza to surround the
Veterans Monument at Fort Valley’s Everett Square Park. Purchase
a brick to honor or memorialize an area veteran, past or present. Up
to three lines, each of .which can have 18 spaces (letters, commas,
spaces, etc.) may be engraved with the veteran’s name, military
branch and/or dates of service. Bricks are $30 each. Order form
available in this issue of The Leader-Tribune.

Burr fatally shoots his long-time political antagonist Alexander
Hamilton. Hamilton, a leading Federalist and the chief architect of
America’s political economy, died the following day.

My 17, 1996: Right 800 explodes over Long Island
Shortly dfter takeoff from New York’s Kennedy International
Airport, a TWA Boeing 747 jetliner bound for Paris explodes over
the Atlantic Ocean, killing all 230 people aboard. Flight 800 had
just received clearance to initiate a climb to cruise altitude when it
exploded without warning. Because the plane was loaded with fuel
for the long transatlantic journey, it vaporized within moments, cre
ating a fireball seen almost all along the coastline of Long Island.
