No one has been arrested lately for going
to church.

Excavation of Thalley Creek in
the Settingdown Creek Watershed
is expected to begin within a week.
Clearing the right-of-way began
last week. Patten Brothers, Roswell
Georgia are the contractors. Asa
result of this work approximately
100 acres of bottom land will have
much better drainage.
A pond site was checked on the
property of Charles Wcodham last
week by SCS technicians.
Eugene Evans near Ducktovvn
worked out a soil and wa<er con
servation plan for his 47 acres
farm last week. The plan calls for
seven acres of new permanent pas
ture and fish pond management on
a one acre pond. Woodland acres
will be protected from fire. John
M. Garrett, SCS technician assisted
Mr. Evans with the plan.

to improve permanent pastures to
take care of 100 head of beef cattle
annually. Mr. Waits fertilizers his
pasture annually using nitrogen
fertilizers in the spring and com
plete fertilizers in the fall.

COMPANY NEWS
Power began flowing this week
from Oliver dam, the Georgia Pow
er Company’s new hydroelectric
generating plant on the Chatta
hoochee river at Columbus.
The plant’s initial power is being
produced by an 18.000 kilowatt
generator. When thre additional
generators are placed in service
:at later dates this summer. Oliver
dam’s total generating capacity
will reach 60,000 kilowatts, making
'it one of the company’s larger hy
droelectric plants.
| Construction work began two
years ago. The company ooints out
that the $14,410,000 installation will

watts, providing “ever-increasing
encouragement” for business firms
seeking industrial sites in the state.
| Oliver dam in interconnected by
the company’s vast network of
transmission lines with its other
steam and hydroelectric plants
throughout the state of Georgia.
| A 2,480 acre lake has been creat
ed by the new dam. Provision has
bee n made for the future instatla
tion of navigation locks at the
option of the federal government.
| Oliver dam is one of a group of
dams known as the Middle Chatta
hoochee Development. This deve'oo
ment will contribute toward full
utilization of the Chattahoochee
for navigation, flood control, water
supplies for municipalities and in
dustries, and recreation purposes
in addition to the production of
electric power.
| The 75 foot high and 2.021 foot
long dam. with its powerhouse in
stallation, is named for James M.
Oliver, former executive vice presi
dent and general manager of th
Gorgia Powr Company. Now re
tired, Mp. Oliver is a veteran of
43 years of service in the public
utility industry.
