Finds Gold
in Tourism
DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The
1974 tourist season in
Dahlonega opened with a bang
as tourists flocked to the
mountain community to seek
their fortunes at the gold
panning boxes at Gold Hills of
Dahlonega.
Gold Hills is a recreated
gold mining village of the mid
1800’s. In 1828, Benjamin
Parks stumbled over a piece of
stone and discovered gold. The
gold rush was on and millions
were mined from the rich
veins of the North Georgia
mountains.
When gold was discovered
in California in 1849, the
miners of Dahlonega, Georgia,
looking for greener pastures,
packed their household
belongings in covered wagons
and headed West. In an effort
to keep the miners in Georgia,
Dr. Matthew Stevenson said,
“There’s gold in these
hills .. .there’s millions in it.”
His remarks were translated
into the mountain language
and the famed phrase “There’s
Gold In Them’ Thar’ Hills,”
was created.
Gold Hills, a 54-acre
amusement facility located in
the beautiful North Georgia
mountains, is an authentic
restoration of a “gold rush
village.” Gold panning is the
major attraction (all the gold
you find is yours) while
children may be more
interested in the pony rides or
the Tom Burnham Wooden
Toy Factory where toys are
whittled before your eyes.
Adults will be more impressed
by the large moonshine still
exhibits and the old-fashioned
craft demonstrations. Besides
viewing these crafts being
made, the visitor will have the
opportunity to purchase the
hand made items at Old
Dahlonega Craft Shop.
The Rock Shop carries rare
and unusual stones and the
Blacksmith Shop is equipped
with antique bellows and
completely operable.
The famous Old Sykes
Stamp Mill, once in actual
operation on the site, has been
restored and is again pounding
out the ore which releases the
precious metal, gold. Big
Nugget Mine has been
reactivated and tracks installed
for the transporting of mining
ore and equipment to the
stamp mill. (This mining area
produced the gold for
Georgia’s capitol dome).
On guided tours, you will
see an historic old Gold
Museum, housing-some of the
original equipment used by
the miners, Preacher Cut
where hardy 19th century
miners washed away the
greater part of an entire
mountain in their quest for
gold, and a Mule Museum
where old farm implements
powered by the mule are
housed.
A covered wagon ride which
offers children of all ages the
chance to ride in
mule-powered conveyances on
beautiful nature trails cut out
of the landscape is the exciting
climax of the tour.
The picnic pavilion attracts
large groups as well as smaller
family outings. Picnic sites
with traditional tables and
benches dot the area around
the covered structure.
Horseshore pitching contests,
gold panning contests and
chicken and baked beans being
cooked over an open fire add
to the old fashioned picnic.
The first event of the season
is scheduled for May 26. A
Gospel Sing sponsored by the
Lumpkin County Sheriff’s
Department on behalf of the
Lumpkin County Baseball
Program features “The
Inspirations,’’ nationally
known gospel singing group
and “The Marksmen Quartet”
of Dahlonega.
The Dahlonega Arts and
Crafts Fair is scheduled at
Gold Hills on June 29-30.
Special efforts are being made
to up-grade the 1974 Fair.
Crafts offered for sale will be
of outstanding quality and a
wider variety of hand made
items will make the Fair more
interesting than last year. Arts
and crafts will be displayed on
the nature trails creating in the
true sense, the old-fashioned
way of living.
