A Georgia Gold Medal Winner
Purple, wonderful...and it’s not Barney!
By Paul A. Thomas
Georgia Extension Service
It was a cold March weekend,
the daffodils were barely up and
not much else was stirring in the
garden— except Verbena
Canadensis ‘Homestead Purple.’
What had been a quiet, pros
trate, almost dormant little
perennial in the farthest corner
of the garden was now a bold,
beckoning mass of purple flow
ers!
No wonder it’s one of the 1994
Georgia Gold Winners of the
Georgia Plant Selections
Committee!
You don’t need a green thumb
to be successful with Verbena

Termite prevention
Egads! It’s termites!
By Janet Rodekohr

If you suspect you ‘re sharing your
home with termites, don’t guess.
Call a pest control professional
immediately.
In the meantime, here’s a checklist
from the University of Georgia
Extension Service that tells you what
to look for:
• Cracks in the concrete foundation.
These give termites hidden access to
your house.
• Wooden posts in concrete. If they
go all the way through the concrete to
the soil underneath, they invite ter
mite attack.
• Earth-filled porches. Soil should
be at least 8 inches below level of any

regardless of how much I neglect
it. It truly is a good plant for low
maintenance gardeners.
Verbena ‘Homestead Purple’
grows 6-9 inches tall, spreads fast
and is a colorful, flowering
ground cover.
Flowering begins in March,
slows down during The heat of
the summer (late June through
August) and then bounces back
with a second burst of color in the
fall.
Full sun and welldrained soils
are essential for optimal garden
performance.
Verbena ‘Homestead Purple’
combines rich purple, early and

a single plant.

• Form boards. If left in place after
construction is
completed, they provide excellent ter

• Leaking pipes or faucets. They
keep the wood or soil underneath
moist continuously.
• Shrubbery by air vents. Anything
that blocks air flow causes air under
neath the house to remain warm and
moist— an ideal climate for termites.
• Debris under and around the
house. Any wooden pieces help sup

the house itself.
• Low foundation walls or foot

in north Georgia by University of
Georgia horticulturists Michael
Dirr and Allan Armitage,
Verbena ‘Homestead Purple’ has
been fast discovered by landsca
pers and homeowners through
out the country.
When planted in a hanging bas
ket, Verbena ‘Homestead Purple’
makes an incredible display with
trailing masses of purple flowers
up to three feet long.
In the landscape, one Verbena
‘Homestead Purple’ can spread
up to three feet in a single grow
ing season, so give it plenty of
room to grow.
When the soft summer foliage
turns brown with the first frost,
the plant forms a new set of
branches from its crown.
Then, if you trim back the old,

a stairway to your home.

here is kept warm year-round and
accelerates termite development.
• Paper collars around pipes. Paper
is made from wood.
• Trellises. If the trellis touches the

Finally, a word of warning: If
you hate butterflies, don’t buy
this plant! I once saw three tiger
swallowtails fight for position on
one poor flower. Their behavior
was shameless!
Verbena ‘Homestead Purple’ is
a great all-around plant and
quite deserving of the Gold Medal
