Forsyth Countv News - Wednesday, November 29,1995 Sports Anglers prepping for start of BASS event on Thursday By Jim Riley Staff Writer With the B.A.S.S. Eastern Invitational Tournament on Lake Lanier’s Thursday start just a few days away, the mood is tense with local anglers honing their skills and hoping to capture the coveted $35,000 top spot. Local anglers Joe Crosby, Mark Hardin, Paul Marks, Mike Brooks and Sheriff Jerry Padgett are competing in the event along with 330 other anglers from Georgia, other states and countries such as Mexico and Zimbabwe. Last year’s champion Mickey Bruce from Buford is also partici pating in this year’s tournament. Bruce won in 1994 by working a leadhead jig through deep, off shore, standing timber. “Believe it or not, 1 was able to catch fish on the bottom in 65 feet of water on this jig,” he said. After practice Monday, Padgett felt confident, but realizes that luck plays a big part in tourna ment success. “I hope that I can get lucky with a good draw so I can stay out of my best places until the last day,” he said. Lake Lanier is known for its spotted bass, and with the five fish limit, Padgett feels that spots will win the tournament. “From my personal experience, the south end of the lake will produce. Spots will win the tournament,” he said. Padgett is planning on using a combination of jigs, spoons and worms for success. He also has two special places picked out where he can fish his last day. “I See BASS, Page 3B WEEK IN SPORTS THU. Raiders nail down first two wins; whip Galloway twice in Classic Shelter’s 20 lead boys to 93-39 win By Jan Koper _____ Sports Correspondent After shooting blanks in a sea son-opening loss to Cass High School, the North Forsyth Raiders exploded for a 93-39 victory over the Galloway School at Saturday night’s finale of the Sawnee Mountain Classic basketball tour nament. Matt Shelter led the Raiders in Mer. Tallant has 21, Lady Raiders win by 46 By Jan Koper Sports Correspondent After a lopsided loss to Forsyth Central last week at North Forsyth’s Sawnee Mountain Classic basketball tournament, the Galloway School must have hoped things would get better Saturday against the host Lady Raiders. They didn’t. After holding Galloway scoreless for the game’s first 12 minutes, Coach Tracey Bryan’s girls coast ed to a 63-17 victory. “We knew going into the game j f llMßfe, ! P ’V:. North Forsyth coach Bobby Smith was not surprised by the complete dominance his squad showed over Galloway, but several facets of the Raiders’ play drew his attention. “We were much more skilled than they were,” Coach Smith said. “But I still was concerned because they gave us a little bit of pressure on defense and we didn’t handle that pressure very well. We that Galloway was not as strong a team as we are used to playing against,” Coach Bryan said. “We wanted to play our best and mea sure ourselves against ourselves, not them. We did a good job. Everybody contributed. Everybody scored on our team. That is always a good feeling.” Center Meredith Tallant led the Lady Raiders with 21 points and was happy the team had evened its record at 1-1. “This game helped get our confidence up,” Tallant said. “We needed a win. We came out and knew what we were doing. didn’t back-door, we didn’t reverse the ball very well, we didn’t hit the post very well. That concerns me as a coach.” One weakness the Raiders showed in their first game that was corrected against Galloway was their ability to put the ball in the basket. “Tonight we got open looks and we were able to put down the shots. That is good,” the coach explained after the game. “We got open looks the first game, too, and See BOYS, Page 2B We made them react to us. That is what we need to do every game.” The Lady Raiders started the game by applying full court pres sure and Galloway had a great deal of difficulty just bringing the ball past halfcourt. “We started out in a zone press and it wasn’t as effective as we would have liked,” Coach Bryan explained. “Then we went with a straight man press and I was pleased with how that worked.” See GIRLS, Page 2B JF I X M \ 1 1 y \ Now hear this... SF wrestlers ready for another big year By Stephen Underwood Sports Editor With some major losses to grad uation and a very young team in the lighter classes, the South Forsyth wrestling team will be hard-pressed to duplicate their success from 1994-95. But with a solid group of up and-coming athletes from freshmen to seniors there’s no doubt they’re going to give it a good shot. Actually it would be tough for this team to match any of their predecessors, after all, the Eagles have taken between 9th and 14th in the state almost every year in Coach John Allen’s reign. In fact, in J.J. Gaines and Shannon Stancil, they’ve had a state run ner-up in a class each of the last three years. “I’m beginning to feel like Marv Levy,” Allen cracked, Wednesday's Fishing Tips PAGE 3B R] By Stephen Underwood Sports Editor It was a different script, similar story Saturday night for the South Forsyth girls basketball team. But the result was a 52-40 loss to Cherokee County in the finals of the Lanier-400 Holiday Tournament. Though they jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, the Lady Eagles again found themselves needing a big rally in the late stages. They cut a 41-27 deficit after three quarters to 43-35 about midway through the fourth, utilizing an aggressive, gambling defense, but that was as far as they could go. Nevertheless, South Head Coach Angie Hembree was fairly satis fied with the tourney as a whole, noting her team’s 2-1 mark against the AAAA and AAA competiton. “We got second place; I can live with that,” she mused. “We’ll be all right.” Kelly Mathis again led the Lady Eagles with 16 points (and eight rebounds), matching her total from the Duluth win. Her short jumpers and turnaround moves in the paint earned her a spot on the See SOUTH, Page 2B referring to the much-maligned Buffalo Bills coach. No one would put the burden on them of replacing the likes of Stancil or Joe Fish, second and fourth in the state last winter at 130 and 125 pounds, but these Eagles should hold their own pretty well. Seven state returnees They are led by six seniors on their varsity roster, including three who went to the State Tournament last winter: Joey Matteen, Jason Holcomb and Adam Norrell. There are four more underclassmen who went to the finals as well. “We’re pretty balanced,” said Allen. “We’ll be a competitive See HOLCOMB, Page 3B .- • t Photo/submitted
