Hot off a runner-up finish in the

three weeks ago, local angler Paul
Marks is excited about fishing the
tournament. “It will take spots
and largemouth bass to win it.
The spots will be important
because the cold weather won’t
affect them as much,” he said.
Marks won $21,000 in the Hall

weighing nearly 24 pounds in two
days.

Holcomb is the highest-finishing
returnee, having just missed the
fifth-place match up at Gilmer
after getting fifth in the Area
Meet. He’ll compete again in the
275-pound class, where he will be
reasonably close to the limit.
“He’s looking good,” said Allen.
“He had a good year in footbali.
He’s strong, intelligent, experi

Matteen is another of the state
qualifying fourth-year athletes,
having placed third in the area
and lost a very close first-round
match in the AA Finals last win

of our team leaders,” said Allen.
“He’s smart and a good all

bottom.”
Norrell is the third senior who
went to Gilmer (sth-area), an ath
lete who came on real strong lhst

“arm-bar” as one of his key
moves and is looking to continue
to progress this year.
Just a sophomore, Robbie
Woockman made the big show as
a freshman at 103 (4th-area) and
will be trying for bigger and bet

at camps over the summer just for
that reason. “He’s improved a
lot,” said his coach. “He’s a
good, tough, smart athlete.”

turning colder and spotted bass
being the target species that local
fishermen have a better shot at
winning the tournament.
“Hopefully with the weather
turning cooler it will turn the
spots on a little better,” he said.
Hardin feels that a 30 to 35
pound five fish creel will win the
tournament.
Local fishing guide Bill
Vanderford feels that it will take
at least a two pound average to
win and that due to conditions,
anglers will have to fish at least
25 to 50 feet deep.
Vanderford has been guiding
anglers on Lake Lanier for 25
years and also feels that spotted
Eagles may need to
make an adjustment
in their lineup as
junior Clint Lively
returns from a rotator
cuff injury. Lively
also made the states
last winter at 119
after getting fourth in
the area.
Greg Buice is
another senior who
will be looking for a
competing spot this
year he was an
alternate last
February. Buice has most of the
physical tools to compete at 189
except the 189 pounds. “We
don’t have a true 189,” confessed
Allen. Senior Brian Cherry, in the
same range, will fill the 171 slot,
however.
More experience comes the
Eagles way via Ohio in the person
of Brian Ulrich at 160. The 10th
grader has been wrestling since
6th-grade according to Allen. But
senior Ray Oliver will also vie for
that spot.
“Our biggest problem is that
most of our experienced wrestlers
are close to the same size,” said
Allen.
South has a lot of youth in the
lighter classes and a lot of
potential. Probably having as
much as anyone is 130-pounder
Ben Fish, who could be the same
champion-level athlete his brother
Joe was. “He’s inexperienced,”
one to aspire to. The junior paced
the county’s talented stars for the
second straight season, .037
ahead of the next highest hitter.
That adds to the .583 mark she
posted last fall and the other top
flight stats she put up in the home
run, RBI and other departments.
The Forsyth County News
regrets the omission.

Forsyth County News fishing

that the weather is likely to stabi

“These are deep fish these guys

“The local anglers will have a

said Allen. “But he’s tough; a
good athlete.”
Speaking of the elder Fish, his
and Stancil’s graduation left the
door open for junior Mike Carroll,
now at 135, to step through and
show his talent. Another junior is
William Cook at 140. But at 103-

Freshmen Jason Palmer and
Greg Cherry will compete at 103

Dickey is at 125. Another new

“We’ve got four or five poten

to the Area Meet. Knowing the
War Eagle program, they’ll have
at least that many and another
successful year.

LAKE LANIER FISHING
REPORT FOR NOVEMBER
29,1995
Lake Lanier is down one half a
foot and the water temperature is
58 degrees. The main lake is
clear and the creeks are clearing.
The best day for fishing will be
Thursday, November 30, 1995,
from 11:55am until 1:05 pm.
Largemouth bass are on points
and creeks all over the lake. There
are also some deeper bass in the
timber that are catchable for the
serious deep water anglers.
In the mouths of the creeks up
river, worms, jigs and crank baits
have been good with the warming
weather.
Using a Texas rigged Zoom u
tail worm in smoke/red or gourd
green, work this lure on the banks
closest to the points. The river
fish are shallower than the lower
lake fish, and adjusting depths all
day will be worth the efforts.
The 1/2-ounce Enticer jigs in all
black, with a larger Uncle Josh
Pro Pork in the same color, will
also be working.
Docks all over the lake are also
good for these baits, and deeper in
the creeks the shad are bunching
up. This shad movement also
draws the bass into these areas
and crank baits have been fair.
The #7 Shad Rap have been
catching fish in these locations,
and light 10-pound test line can
make the bait run a little deeper.
The 1/2 ounce Flex-it spoons in
the timber, have been good down

lake.
But with the bass roaming a lot
this week, casting the other lures
is more productive. If a late week
cold front rolls in, head to the
timber with jigs and worms.
Spotted Bass are also biting
well, and the deeper the structure,
the better the sizes of the fish.
Docks all over the lake are also
holding spots, and worms as well
as jigs are working. If the sun is
high, use sand and Limeaide
Zoom worms on a Texas rig. If
the overcast conditions move in
by week’s end, use water melon
green and pumpkinseed on the
same rig.
Also look in the ditches in the
creeks and off lake coves at 30 to
50 feet for the old trees and natur
al brush. The Zoom dark blue
plastic pork trailer on the match
ing colors of 3/8 ounce Georgia
jig, is a good choice for this deep
structure.
Simply drop the lure right into
the structure and vertically lift the
lure making contact with the
cover. Strikes might be light so a
sensitive rod and lighter line will
allow the angler to feel this slight
movement.
A spoon can also work in these
areas with short lifts of the bait
working it through the cover.
Stripers are heading to the
rivers and there are huge schools
of fish and in a lot of sizes.
The fish are averaging 10 to 14
pounds and the Chestatee Bay, all

is loaded with these fish
A few sea gulls have made there
way into the area, but they are not
in large numbers yet. The sea
gulls are shad finders, allowing
anglers to fish large areas in the
bays as well as in the rivers.
Smaller live trout or bass min
nows at depths of 30 feet on a
down line, will be sure to put the
baits in front of a lot of fish.
Spoons and white buck tail jigs
are also a good choice, just stay
with the shad schools and lift
these baits slowly.
Crappie are hiding from most
anglers and there are only a few
reports of these fish being taken.
The best locations will be the
marina docks or larger docks that
provide lots of shad.
The waters are clearing at
almost all depths as the Corp
pulls lots of water all most every
day. Using the Bass Pro Shops
Squirt jigs in lime, banana and
sand on a tine jig head is the best
lure.
Minnows have not been working
for these fish.
