PAGE 4A i FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS Wxifxxtay, Novmbr 29,1985 Organization helping fight the flu Visiting Nurse Health System (VNHS) will offer its second annual “Fight the Flu” program to help combat the flu in Atlanta. Teaming up with The Kroger Co., the Atlanta Health Care Alliance and the Prudential Health Care System, VNHS expects to give more than 18,000 shots between September 16 and December 7 to people at risk for contracting the flu. This year, flu shot clinics for the general public will be held at 45 Kroger locations and at major office complexes in the Atlanta area. In addition, large employers such as Delta, Northwest Airlines and Southern Bell have arranged for VNHS to immunize their employees at work. For smaller companies wanting to offer flu shots as an employee benefit, VNHS will issue vouchers that employees can redeem at any of the public flu shot clinics. Like last year, shots are $lO with all profits going towards provid ing heath care for those in need. Northeast Ga. commemorates World AIDS Day The eighth annual observance of World AIDS Day will be com memorated on Dec. 1, 1995. One hundred and ninety coun tries around the world have desig nated this day to draw public attention to the AIDS pandemic. In the U.S., activities for World AIDS Day across the country are coordinated by the American Association for World Health, in conjunction with the World Health organization (WHO), the Pan American Health Organization, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. As of June 30, 1995, 1,169,811 cumulative AIDS cases in adults and children have been reported to the World Health Organization since onset of the pandemic. It is further estimated that around 4.5 million AIDS cases in adults and children have occurred worldwide since the pandemic began. The AIDS virus is no longer a “gay” disease. AIDS is the leading cause of death among men ages 25 to 44. the fourth leading cause of death among women ages 25 to 44 and it is the sixth leading cause Deaths Mrs. Elizabeth Proctor Holton Mrs. Elizabeth Proctor Holton, 71, of Cumming and formerly of Tucker, died Saturday, Nov. 25, 1995, following an extended ill ness. Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Evelyn Holton, of Cumming and Charles Holton, of Tucker; grand children, Shondi and Steve Smith, of Jonesboro, Michael and Michelle Holton, of Marblehead, Ma., Chuck and Cheryl Holton, of Greenville, S.C., David Holton, of Jonesboro, and Amber Holton, of Cumming; great grandchildren, Paige Smith and Chathan Holton; brothers and sisters, Mary and Ed Kalvas, of Surfside, S.C., Jim and Willa Proctor, of Springhill, Fla., Henry Proctor, of Hollywood. Ca., Virginia and Robert Stanley, of Shrewsbury, Ma., and Martha Aldrich, of Edge water, Md.; and a number of other relatives also sur vive. Graveside services were held on Monday, Nov. 27, 1995 at 1 p.m. at Floral Hills Memory Garden in Tucker. Dr. Jim Crews officiated. Ingram Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. The Forsyth County News November 29, 1995 Louie Tate Mr. Louie Tate, 79, of Cumming died Sunday, Nov. 26, 1995, fol lowing a sudden illness. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Edith and Lynn Holbrook, of Cumming; grandchil dren, Lisa and Mike Wallace; great grandchildren, Brittany, Hillary and Kimberly Wallace; brother and sister-in-law, Ansel and Lillian Tate, of Cumming; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Leola and Jerry Prather, of Cumming, Louie and Alma Estes, of Winston Salem, N.C.,and Frank and Peggy Estes, of Smyrna; stepmother-in law, Jewell Estes, of Cumming; and a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives also survive. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Nov.<2B, 1995 at 2 p.m. at Ingram Funeral Home Chapel. For those individuals who are cov ered under Medicare Part B, VNHS will accept Medicare reim bursement with the presentation of a Medicare Part B card. A community awareness cam paign has been planned to educate the general public about the need to immunize against the flu. Through a special 800 number (1- 800-NO FLU 95), VNHS will provide information about the flu, who is as risk for contracting the disease and where individuals may receive a flu shot. The “Fight The Flu” campaign is part of a national flu prevention program sponsored by Visiting Nurse Association of America and local Visiting Nurse organizations throughout the country. This year 150 local VNAs expect to immu nize a total of 1.8 million Americans. The flu is a viral infection affect ing the nose, throat and respirato ry system. Those suffering from the flu have fever, chills, cough and aches While most people are of death among people ages 15 to 24. In Georgia Health District 2, which encompasses Banks, Dawson, Franklin, Forsyth. Habersham, Hall, Hart, Lumpkin, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union and White Counties, approximate ly 122 AIDS cases have been reported since reporting began in January 1980. Causes of the virus remain the same. HIV is passed to another person only when blood, semen, vaginal secretions or breast milk that contains HIV is introduced into that person’s body. Methods of contracting HIV are having unprotected sex, sharing needles to shoot up drugs, and sharing needles for ear piercing, tattoos, or steroids with someone infected with HIV or HIV passed from an infected mother to her child dur ing pregnancy. You do not get HIV from donat ing blood, mosquito bites, and other bug bits, drinking fountains or toilet seats, hugging, touching or dry kissing a person with HIV, sharing cups and utensils, going to any public place with HIV infect ed people, sneezes or coughs, The Revs. Lynn Holbrook, Danny Bennett and Hugh Martin officiat ed. The Forsyth County News November 29, 1995 Ralph (Cotton) Sexton Mr. Ralph (Cotton) Sexton, 60, of Buford died Saturday, Nov. 25, 1995. Mr. Sexton was a longtime resi dent of Gwinnett County. He was retired from General Motors and was employed by Hayes Chrysler of Lawrenceville. He was a mem ber of Rolling Hills Baptist Church in Buford and the Buford Masonic Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Jean Tanner Sexton, of Buford; daugh ter, Shera Crowe, of Buford; son, Steven Sexton, of Buford; step daughter, Marisa Robertson, of Lawrenceville; sisters. Dorothy Jean Bagwell, of Cumming and Janis Thomas, of Cumming; a brother, Ray Sexton, of Buford; five grandchildren, several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 1995 at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of the Tim Stewart Funeral Home in Lawrenceville. The Rev. Dennis Culbreth officiat ed. Interment was in Gwinnett Memorial Park, Lawrenceville. Tim Stewart Funeral Home in Lawrenceville was in charge of arrangements. The Forsyth County News November 29, 1995 Michael Bernard Cain Mr. Michael Bernard Cain, 42, of Cumming died Saturday, Nov. 25, 1995 after an extended illness. Mr. Cain was a graduate of Forsyth County High School and Lanier Technical Institute. He was a member of Harmony Grove Baptist Church and had been pre viously employed by Stork-Gamco as a machinist. He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Cain. Survivors in€f\ude his children, Jason Michael Cain and Karen bedridden for a few days, some experience more serious illness and thousands of people die each year as a result of the flu and related complications. Each year there is a new strain of flu. This year the flu strains are A-Texas, A-Johannesburg and B-Harbin. Harvard Medical School puts the current annual cost of influenza at $3-5 billion. More than 383.4 mil lion work and school days are dis rupted every year due to the flu virus. According to the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, individuals should consider getting a flu shot if they are 65 years or older, have chronic or long term illness (diabetes, kid ney disease, asthma or cancer), have substantial contact with young children or the elderly, or have demanding family or work responsibilities and cannot risk being sick. Approximately 70 percent of those receiving a flu shot will be completely protected against the disease. sharing telephones, computers or coffee pots. Prevention of HIV The safest behavior is abstaining from sex or having sex with only one uninfected partner who has sex only with you. Of course, using latex condoms correctly, not sharing needles and practicing safer sexual activities such as dry kissing and massage will reduce the risk of infection. “Education and being knowl edgeable of preventative behavior are the only ways we have of combating this disease, as there is no cure. Educating yourself about the disease is within reach. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 1995 at 11 a.m. at Ingram Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Dennis Bottoms, Ricky Waters and Pete Martin officiated. Interment was in Sawnee View Gardens. The Forsyth County News November 29, 1995 Mrs. Lucile Powell Harvey Mrs. Lucile Powell Harvey, 89, of Cumming died Friday, Nov. 24, 1995 at Crescent Ridge Nursing Home. Mrs. Harvey was bom in Johnson County, Ga. on Jan. 30, 1906. She was a member of Jones Memorial Methodist Church for 54 years and a member of Fidelis Sunday School class. She was retired from Medical Brace Company. Survivors include a son, George R. Harvey 111 of Cumming; sisters, Ree Black of Milledgeville, Ga. and Bessie Frost of Vidalia, Ga.; a brother, Leonard Powell of Milledgeville, Ga.; six grandchil dren; five great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. Funeral services were held on Sunday, Nov. 26 at 2 p.m. at the Chapel of Parkway Garden Funeral Home, in Forest Park, Ga. The Revs. P.V. Hall and Tom Tout officiated.
