Organization helping fight the flu
Visiting Nurse Health System
(VNHS) will offer its second
annual “Fight the Flu” program to
help combat the flu in Atlanta.
Teaming up with The Kroger Co.,
the Atlanta Health Care Alliance
and the Prudential Health Care
System, VNHS expects to give
more than 18,000 shots between
September 16 and December 7 to
people at risk for contracting the
flu.
This year, flu shot clinics for the
general public will be held at 45
Kroger locations and at major
office complexes in the Atlanta
area. In addition, large employers
such as Delta, Northwest Airlines
and Southern Bell have arranged
for VNHS to immunize their
employees at work. For smaller
companies wanting to offer flu
shots as an employee benefit,
VNHS will issue vouchers that
employees can redeem at any of
the public flu shot clinics.
Like last year, shots are $lO with
all profits going towards provid
ing heath care for those in need.

Michael Bernard Cain
Mr. Michael Bernard Cain, 42, of

1995 after an extended illness.
Mr. Cain was a graduate of
Forsyth County High School and
Lanier Technical Institute. He was

Survivors in€f\ude his children,

bedridden for a few days, some
experience more serious illness
and thousands of people die each
year as a result of the flu and
related complications. Each year
there is a new strain of flu. This
year the flu strains are A-Texas,
A-Johannesburg and B-Harbin.
Harvard Medical School puts the
current annual cost of influenza at
$3-5 billion. More than 383.4 mil
lion work and school days are dis
rupted every year due to the flu
virus. According to the national
Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, individuals should
consider getting a flu shot if they
are 65 years or older, have chronic
or long term illness (diabetes, kid
ney disease, asthma or cancer),
have substantial contact with
young children or the elderly, or
have demanding family or work
responsibilities and cannot risk
being sick.
Approximately 70 percent of
those receiving a flu shot will be
completely protected against the
disease.
sharing telephones, computers or
coffee pots.
Prevention of HIV
The safest behavior is abstaining
from sex or having sex with only
one uninfected partner who has
sex only with you. Of course,
using latex condoms correctly, not
sharing needles and practicing
safer sexual activities such as dry
kissing and massage will reduce
the risk of infection.
“Education and being knowl
edgeable of preventative behavior
are the only ways we have of
combating this disease, as there is
no cure. Educating yourself about
the disease is within reach. The
American Red Cross and the
District Health Department are
excellent resources for anyone
that would like to know the facts
about HIV/AIDS,” said Patricia
E. Mahony, Public Relations
Coordinator, American Red
Cross.
