University of Florida rates the best with this SEC/college baseball fan By Jerry Cauley Special to the Forsyth County News Forsyth Central teacher and head softball coach Jerry Cauley has been filing spring training reports from Florida each spring for many years, including the days when FCHS grad Glenn Sutko was a top prospect. This year, Cauley took some thing of a detour from the bigs— and checked out some of the nation’s best college baseball—a great alternative to fans wanting great baseball without the down side of the pro game. In part one, Cauley introduced the SEC and shared the perspec tives from some top coaches on why it is the best. In part two, he rated the stadiums, clubhouses, team potential, atmospheres and traditions from the top schools. In part three, Cauley, after rec ognizing two rising powers, reveals the lop baseball experi ence on his spring trip. Before reaching the grand finale, I know that Alabama and South Carolina were left out, but both are ranked currently in the top twenty-five. New coach Jim Wells has built the Crimson Tide into a national power in only two years, winning two straight SEC tournament titles. Coach Ray Tanner is trying to do the same at South Carolina, and is off to a great start. Both are great places to visit and watch a game, but missed out slightly on my list. Best of the Best - University of Florida Sony, Gator Haters, but my visit to Gainesville was the highlight of the trip. Assistant Sports Information Director Steve Shaff and his great staff at Florida were simply awe some. They make you feel wel come and special the moment you enter the gate. Stepping off the elevator into the press box, you are greeted with smiles and handshakes, given media guides and all necessary information for the day’s game, and shown to your seat —which turns out to be the best seat in the house. A huge board in the press box keeps you up to date on another games going on in the conference, and refreshments are available for your enjoyment. Mekethan Stadium is a beautiful facility, looking out over the cam pus. The basketball dome and football stadium stand out in the background, and the field itself is simply plush. There are vendors going throughout the stands, just like at professional games, and the crowd gets into Gator chants— with special sound effects from the press box. Pizza is delivered to fans in the stands who answer trivia ques tions, the Florida sunshine beams down on a big crowd and every one has a great time. The Chicago Bulls intro song is played as the team hits the field, television from Jessica Jordan and Brooke Bagby. Steve Shaff keeps things orga nized as always, then makes us feel like we were really welcome and says he hopes we can come back again. We were treated better at Florida than anywhere else in the league, and I really plan to make it a stop annu ally on my spring training trips. Well there it is, one fan’s jour ney through the SEC.
