Tips on selecting a great garden center
Have you ever wished for a con
fident professional to guide you
through the plethora of plants and
related products available today?
The following tips from the
American Association of
Nurserymen (AAN) will help you
select a garden center and become
a smart shopper at the same time.
• Professional affiliations.
Garden centers and nurseries who
belong to professional trade associ
ations are committed to maintain
ing a knowledgeable staff. Ask if
they have certified or licensed nurs
ery professionals on staff. Look for
this information in advertisements,
in the windows of the center itself,
or call the store.
• Willingness to educate.
Garden centers which form part
nerships with their customers
demonstrate a desire to educate.
They hold seminars and demon-
Looking for a landscape professional
Dreams of lovely landscapes
don’t turn ugly if you know how to
find a competent landscape profes
sional. The American Association
of Nurserymen (AAN) and its land
scape division, the National
Landscape Association (NLA)
advise you to seek the following
qualities in a landscape service:
1. Professionalism. Many states
have certified nurseryman programs
and registered landscape profes
sionals. Is your prospect among
hem? Does the company that gave
you that incredibly low bid have a
federal identification number that
designates it as a real business? Are
they insured? Consumers should
ask these questions for their own
protection. How do you recognize a
professional when you see one?
They arrive on time and take pic-

Education is the center’s way of
ensuring the customer’s success in
the garden.
• Commitment to community.
When you shop garden centers,
you’re establishing a relationship
with someone whose focus is gar
dening, not building materials or
housewares. Most independent
retailers view their business as a
livelihood, not a commodity. Their
stores reflect this in various ways.
Some offer a broad selection of
plants which includes unique vari
eties. Others extend hospitality by
hosting fall festivals and holiday
events.
• Shopping savvy. Act like a
Boy Scout and “be prepared” when
you visit your garden center. If you
have a landscaping project in mind,
bring measurements and pho-
tures or draw sketches of your prop
erty while there. One New York
professional brings a book of color
plant photographs and an inventory
list of his stock.
2. Questions. Find out how
many years the firm has been in
business. Ask for customer refer
ences and follow up by calling
referrals. It’s extremely important
to ask who will be supervising the
installation. Problems can result
from communication gaps between
estimator and installer. Proper han
dling of live plants is critical. Are
your installers trained to do the job
correctly?
3. Paperwork. Ask for an item
ized estimate listing materials and
plant sizes. What about cleanup—

even if you can’t duplicate a plant,
you can achieve a similar look.

Shop during off-peak times and
you’ll get more attention from
nursery staff. Saturdays are notori
ously busy, but inquire locally for
optimum shopping hours. One gar
den center in Montana notes that
Sunday mornings and weekday
evenings are pleasantly peaceful.
Customers wander through the
uncrowded demonstration gardens
while their children enjoy the play
ground and train garden.
