A master plan is key to a uni
fied landscape. One of the most
important guidelines you and your
landscape architect will follow is a
carefully prepared master plan. A
master plan might include a year
by-year approach—deck installa
tion the first year, pool the second,
and so on. Plans look at the big
picture, thus ensuring cohesiveness
in the landscape. Adhere to the
master plan with a plant palette
that starts at the curb and carries
through the yard. If you’ve chosen
15 to 20 different plants, stick to
them so that your landscape is read
in masses, not in individual plants.
The landscape should be an overall
experience.
Subdivide your yard into sever

place to go to everyday. A large

Bosse. Terraces provide grade

a transition between the house and
pool. A spa garden situated close
to the master bedroom area might
be separated by terraces, steps or
flower beds. A vine covered arbor,

Incorporate current and inter
' esting trends in your own land
: scape. Landscape design proses
: sionals are focusing more on pri
i vate spaces—especially those situ
l ated near the master bedroom or
: guest room. Wall fountains and
t small sitting decks enclosed by
' lush gardens provide a sanctuary
, close at hand. Koi ponds are still
i very popular, and with current
: technology and fillration systems,
they almost care for themselves.
Koi fisTi and flowering water
plants like lilies and irisej add a
playful element to any' yard.
Another way landscapers, are mov

with pools situated against the
stem wall. Viewed from the
house, it gives the illusion of float

climates, outdoor fireplaces are
making a comeback as a great
gathering place for friends and
family.
