turn dark olive green with age.
Pink Chinese loropetalum, like
its white counterpart, grows to be
a large shrub or small tree. So it’s
- best used as a background plant
behind other low-growing shrubs.
With pruning, you can also train it
as a small multistem tree or large
shrub.
Its abundance of flowers and
low maintenance requirements
have made pink Chinese
loropetalum the 1997 Georgia
Gold Medal winner for shrubs.
Pink Chinese Loropetalum is a
broadleaf evergreen in the witch
hazel family. It flowers mainly in
April but produces sporadic flow
ers throughout the growing sea
son.
Plant size varies by cultivar.
But most reach a mature size of
six to 10 feet with an equal
spread. Most are also cold-hardy
(down to zero degrees) and pest
resistant.

Pink Chinese Loropetalum
(Loropetalum chinensevar. rubrum)
The plarjt bears narrow, strap
shaped petals one inch long from
each leaf axil along the shoot.
Flowers blanket the plant at peak
bloom.
The leaves are evergreen, oval
and one to two inches long on
most cultivars.-But the cultivars’
foliage color varies greatly, rang
ing from ruby red to dark purple
or olive green. An added feature is
the bark. It turns a rich brown
with age and provides a dramatic
accent, particularly on plants
trained as multi trunk trees.
Pink Chinese loropetalum
flowers best in full sun but also
produces a strong floral showing
in 50 percent shade. The plant
adapts well to many soil types,
including north Georgia clays and
coastal Georgia sands. But the
soils must be well-drained.
The plant is terrifically heat
tolerant. And once it’s established,
it’s drought-tolerant. It has no
major insect or disease pests and
is an excellent choice for low
mamtenance landscapes.
Apply low rates of fertilizer in
early spring and midsummer.
Prune after it blooms if you need
to trim its size or increase its
branching and density. , v ,

Customers are always asking about the improvements and/or repairs to make on
their homes. Whether anticipating to sell or just making improvements, I have
listed some basic suggestions.
