Protect appliances
against lightning
As the season changes to spring,
take the opportunity to make sure
that your living environment is safe.
Georgia Power offers several quick
checks to ensure electrical safety. It
takes less than a second for a light
ning-generated electrical surge to
damage valuable electronic equip
ment and household appliances.
Protect your home with Light’n
Guard, a surge protector that can be
attached to your home’s electric
meter to protect your air condition
er, refrigerator, dishwasher, washer,
dryer, ceiling fans and all other
motor-driven appliances in your
home.
Check for outlets with loose-fit
ting plugs, which can overheat and
lead to fire. Replace any broken
wall plates. Make sure safety covers
protect all unused outlets, especial
ly those that are accessible to chil
dren.
.Make sure cords are in good
condition—not frayed or cracked.
Never nail or staple cords to the
wall, baseboard or any other object.
Keep them out of high traffic areas.
Never place them on furniture.
Check to see that extension
cords are not overheated.
Remember, extension cords should
only be used temporarily. They are
not safe as permanent household
wiring.
Use the proper type of plug in
each outlet Never force a plug into
an outlet. Plugs should fit securely.
Never overload an outlet.
Never place any electrical appli
ance near water. Keep them away
from sinks and bathtubs. If an
appliance gets wet, unplug it and
don’t use it until it has been
checked by a qualified repairer.

Ground fault circuit interrupters
(GFCIs) can prevent electrocutions.
Use them in any area where water and
electricity may come into contact,
including bathrooms, kitchens and
outdoor areas. Test GFCIs regularly
according to the manufacturer’s
instructions to make sure they are
working properly.
Check the wattage of all light
bulbs in lighting fixtures to make sure
they are correct for that fixture.
Circuit breakers and fuses should
be the correct size for the circuits. If
you do not know the correct size fuse,
* ask an electrician to identify and label.
