’Net-based business
opportunities: Beware
of flop-portunities
Ads promising big money from
Internet-related business opportu
nities: You’ve seen them on TV, in
newspapers, and even in your e
mail. Everyday, people make
money using the Internet, and the
commercial possibilities seem end
less. Unfortunately, every entrepre
neur who buys into an Internet
“opportunity” doesn’t automatical
ly find a pot of gold at the end of
the digital rainbow.
Scam artists are cashing in on the
Internet’s potential by selling
fraudulent Internet-related business
opportunities. They say you can
earn thousands of dollars selling
machines that enable television
access to the Internet or selling
kiosks that provide walk-up access
to the Internet. Or, they claim they
can train you to be a high-paid
“Internet consultant.” Many of
these scams are targeted to individ
uals who are not technologically
savvy. Indeed, many pitches seem
designed to take advantage of an
entrepreneur’s “Internet inno
cence.” Don’t let them fool you.
The FTC urges you to investigate
Internet-related business opportu
nities as carefully as you would
check out any business opportuni
ty. Before you invest or buy into
any business opportunity:
• Realize that seminar “trainers”
or “consultants” often are there to
sell you a business opportunity, not
teach you Internet basics.
In fact, they may be counting on
your lack of experience with com
puters or the Internet.
• Investigate all earnings claims.
Talk to others who have purchased
the opportunity to see if their expe
rience verifies the claims. Visit
them in person.
• Demand to see the company’s
claims in writing. In fact, get all
promises in writing.
• Keep your eyes and ears open
for “shills” or phony references.
Don’t accept a list of references
selected by the company that offers
the business opportunity as a sub
stitute for a complete list of fran
chise or business opportunity own
ers.
* Ask for a disclosure docu
ment if you are interested in a fran
chise. This document is required
by law. It should provide detailed
information to help you compare
one business to another.
Be skeptical of companies that do
not have disclosure documents.

chises, business opportunities,

New law: Local consumers can be included
on ‘no call list’for telemarketing this July ’J
Consumers who want to limit
telemarketing calls will be able
to place themselves on a “PSC
No Call List” starting in July.
For a one time $5 charge, con
sumers are placed on a list
which telemarketers are banned
from calling.
Included in the definition of a
telemarketer are persons or
companies that “encourage the
purchase or rental of, or invest
ment in, property, goods or ser
vices...” HB 71, introduced by
Speaker Tom Murphy last year,
passed both chambers this ses
sion after excluding calls from
political pollsters and candi
dates for public offices.

legislation imposing tougher
penalties against telephone
companies that switch con
sumers local and long distance
phone services without their
consent - the practice known as
“slamming.”
Under provisions of HBII3O,
telephone companies are given
90 days to resolve a con
sumer’s slamming complaint.
If the offending company has
not issued a refund entitled to
the consumer within that 90-
day period, consumers can sue
the company in their local
courts for up to three times the
amount the consumer lost in
rate differences.

“We are supportive of any
measure that gives consumers
more power to combat the iso
lated companies who engage in
this practice,” Baker said.
Slamming complaints at thi
PSC have escalated from near
ly 200 in 1995 to nearly 200$
last year. As a result of legislaj
tion pushed by the PSC last
year, telephone companies can
now be fined up to $15,000 per
slamming violation.
Consumers who believe they
have been slammed should
report the incident to the
Georgia Public Servict
Commission by calling (800)
282-5813.
