Maj. Cecil K. Vaughn
Retired U.S. Army Maj. Cecil
K. Vaughn, 62, of Cumming, died
Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998.
A native of Fulton County,
Vaughn was retired from the U.S.
Army after 22 years of distin
guished service. He received
medals and coammenda
tions, including three bronze ser
vice stars for heroic and meritous
service and a First Award Good
Conduct Medal. Vaughn was hon
orably discharged from the U.S.
Army in 1974.
Survivors include his wife,
Jacqueline J. Vaughn of Mesa,
Ariz.; children, Shelley Marie and
Bill Pierce of Mesa, Ariz., Samuel
Dean Vaughn and Sandra Denise
Roberts of Scottsdale, Ariz., and
Susan Christine and Lee Klocke of
Kansas City, Mo.; grandchildren,
Kyle, Keith, Megan, A.J., Tyler
and Michaela; aunts, Mildred
Faulkner of Pontotoc, Miss, and
Catherine Robbins of Southhaven,
Miss.; and a number of other rela
tives.
Funeral services will be held
Thursday, Oct. 2, at 11 a.m. at
Ingram Funeral Home Chapel. The
Rev. Posey Starkey will officiate.
Interment will be held at
Chattanooga National Cemetery.

PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE
The Forsyth County Board of Commissioners will hold a meet
ing on Monday, October 12,1998 at 5:00 p.m. in the
Commissioners’ Meeting Room - Suite 220, in the Forsyth
County Administration Building located at 110 East Main
Street, Cumming, Georgia 30040. The 1999 Operating Budget
for Forsyth County will be considered for adoption at this
meeting.
The proposed Budget is available for public inspection in the
Forsyth County Commissioners’ Office, Suite 210, Forsyth
County Administration Building, 110 East Main Street,
Cumming, Georgia 30040. The proposed Budget may be exam
ined between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday

Frazier said he was surprised by the
verdict, adding he thought the jury
couldn’t get beyond Rourke’s
blood alcohol level or the fact other
drivers stopped at the intersection
saw McGinnis barreling down the
road.
“But there wasn’t any evidence
he was driving erraticallya that
night,” Frazier said.

Effie Corene Pirkle
Effie Corene Pirkle, 77, of
Gainesville, died Saturday, Sept.
26, 1998. She was preceded in
death by her husband, Reed
Pirkle.
Survivors include her sons
and daughters-in-law, Dennis and
Charlotte Pirkle of Oakwood and
Stanley and Freida Pirkle of
Gainesville; four grandchildren;
one great-grandchild; brother,
Royce Hamby of San Fransico,
Calif.; sisters and brother-in-law,
Marie Elliott. Lola and Norval
Caples, all of Gainesville; and a
number of nieces, nephews and
other relatives.
Funeral services were held
Monday, Sept. 28, at 2 p.m. at
Liberty Baptist Church in
Dawson County. The Revs.
Steven Davis and Gerald
Blackburn officiated.
Interment was held in the
church cemetery.

Milton L. Craddock
Milton L. “Bob” Craddock, 77,
of Cumming, and formerly of
Atlanta, died Sunday, Sept. 27,
1998.
Craddock was born in
Fountain Inn, S.C. and was a
World War II army veteran. He
was retired from R. L. Stephens
Company in Atlanta and a mem
ber of Riverbend Baptist Church
in Norcross.
Survivors include his wife,
Gussie Craddock of Cumming;
McClelland said he thought the jury
made a good decision based on the
evidence.
In addition to second-degree
vehicular homicide, the jury found
McGinnis guilty of driving under
the influence of marijuana and fail
ure to stop at a red light.
Each misdemeanor is punish
able up to 12 months in prison.
Judge Stan Gault will consider sen
tencing at a later date.

feet and stopped to rest. He went up a little more
and fell.”
According to assistant coroner Mike
Castleberry, Lindsey was helping connect new
equipment to the tower for Andrews Corporation.
Two witnesses said they heard a noise and looked
up to see the fall. The pair then called emergency
crews to the scene.
Lindsey was wearing safety equipment, but the
harness was apparently not connected to the
tower, Castleberry said.

Cumming man sentenced in Gilmer

A Cumming man will spend
life in prison for murdering a
Gilmer County deputy in 1996, a
Union County jury decided
Monday morning.
Deputy Brett Dickey, 29, died

Although the accident happened in Forsyth
County, Fulton County Eemergency Medical
Service and fire department received the call.
Upon arrival paramedics found Lindsey in full
arrest and tried to resuscitate him on the way to
North Fulton Hospital, where he was pronounced
dead at 10:37 a.m.
The Forsyth County Coroner’s office trans
ported the body to the state medical examiner for
an autopsy.
“We’re still trying to piece it all together,”
Chalker said.
Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. at
Daves Creek Baptist Church, with
the Revs. Johnny Eubanks and
Barry Payne officiating. Interment
will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends at
the funeral home Tuesday, from 4-
9 p.m.

Ellen Holcomb Banister
Ellen Holcomb Banister, 84, of
Dawsonville, died Monday, Sept.
28, 1998 at her residence after an
extended illness.
A native of Statesboro, she was
a former resident of Forsyth
County and lived a number of
years in Savannah and Atlanta. In
1965 she moved to Dawson
County and along with her hus
band, opened Banister Funeral
Home. Banister was a member of
the First Baptist Church in
Dawsonville and was preceded in
after being shot in the chest while
attempting to serve an aggravated
assault warrant on Tommy Lamar
Pickren, 28, on Feb. 13, 1996.
Dickey’s partner, Mark Sanford,
was also injured.
The jury found Dickey guilty
on five counts of felony murder
and six counts of aggravated
death by her parents, Henry and
Lou Ellen Holcomb and husband,
Ford Banister.
Survivors include her daughter,
Catherine B. Manier of
Dawsonville; son and daughter-in
law, Larry and Joyce Banister of
Dahlonega; sisters, Eunice
Williams of Cumming, Pansy
Clarke of Savannah and Bonnie
Warrington of Orlando, Fla.; broth
ers, Noah Dean Holcomb of
Savannah and Howell Holcomb of
Crescent City, 111.; three grandchil
dren; five great-grandchildren; and
a number of nieces, nephews and
other relatives.
Funeral services will be held
Wednesday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m. at
Bearden Funeral Home Chapel.
The Rev. Hugh Fields will offici
ate.
Interment will be held at
Dawsonville Memorial Gardens.
