Investigators found a plastic jug in the
van’s engine and a radiator cap among the
debris.
Jennifer Lane was riding down the highway
with her husband when they witnessed the
crash. “I thought the guy [in the truck] was
pulling over,” she said. “Then he just slammed
into the van.”
Both men suffered internal injuries and
were airlifted to Georgia Baptist Medical
Center.
Alcohol appears to be a factor in the acci

underwent mouth surgery. Her
skin color began to turn a very
pale white.
Waters immediately cleared the
child’s airway and began to per
form CPR. Before paramedics
could arrive, Cassidy was breath
ing on her own again.
Bartlett is nominated for his part
in apprehending a rape suspect
last year in Pike County. The sus
pect had barricaded himself in a
mobile home and taken his girl
friend hostage.
A five-man special response
team finally convinced him to
release his girlfriend. During the
13-hour negotiations, the suspect
shot numerous times at the team.
After a stand-still, they fired 20
rounds of tear gas and diversion
devices into the home. A robot
located the suspect’s position and
the team rushed in and arrested
the suspect.
The “act of heroism” award goes
to public safety employees who
do an outstanding job saving lives
and protecting property.
“It’s time we recognize these
fine men and women who, on a
day-to-day basis guard us, defend
us and dedicate their lives to pro
tecting us,” said Gov. Zell Miller.
Award winners will be
announced at a ceremony on Oct.
7 in Forsyth, near Macon.
