Autumn fem a
great choice for
shady spots
Few gardening situations are
more frustrating than trying to grow
plants under large trees.
The corky, drought-prone, root
infestpd soil is perhaps the worst
possible place to establish plants.
But autumn fern (Dryopteris
erythosora) is one choice that
works.
Unlike other woodland fems that
die down in winter, autumn fern*
stays green.
Even better, the new fronds
emerge a bright, coppery red in the
spring and provide a striking con
trast to surrounding green foliage.
Native to China, Korea and
Japan, autumn fern is a long-lived,
true perennial that can withstand
temperatures down to 15 degrees.

It does best in highly organic
soils and in areas where it can be
watered when it doesn’t rain.
Best in colonies
Autumn ferns look best when
planted in colonies of several plants.
Set plants 8 to 12 inches apart.
When establishing autumn fems
under trees, plant them in single
holes to keep from damaging tree
roots.
Never cultivate under trees.
When you plant, put 2 to 3 inch
es of organic compost and another 3
inches of mulch on the soil surface
to help hold water and nutrients.
Water after planting and during
establishment. A little liquid fertiliz
er applied when you plant will
encourage establishment, too.
