STATE of GEORGIA*
The Presentments of the Grand Jury for the county of Burke,
at a Superior Court begun and holdcn at Waynlborongh,
on Tuefday the Seventeenth, Wednesday the eigh'ecath,
and Thursday the nineteenth of O&ofter 1706, before the
Honorable William Stith, Esq. Chief justice, and John
Jones and Hugh Lawson, ESqrs. Afliltant Justices.
WE, the Grand Jury, on our oaths do present;
lft. We present as a very great grievance, that the Com*
niflioners of that diftrift of the river road, from Brier creek
to M Bean, have turued the Said road from whe. e .it cioiied
M‘Dauiel’s creek, (in a good place, and the road veiy di
rect, and on good highland) and have carried it by John
»recne, Esq. through an arm of his mill pond, where, when
te hath a tolerable head of water, the water will run over
be back of a borfe, fourteen hands high, for many yards,
ind likewise erodes the creek below the mill, where it is af
efted by every Small frefli, by which the bridge is often torn
ip, and the road thereby rendered impaflablc.
ad. We present as it grievance that the road is not kept
n repair, from Waynlborough to Rae’s Cowpen.
3d. That the road is not kept in repair from the Beaver
am to Sandy creek.
4th. That the road is not kept in repair from Odom’s
erry to M*Bean, and recommend that Zachaiiah Fryer, and
Captain John Feorn be appointed Commiflioner s for laid road.
sth. That the road is not kept in repair from Waynfbo
ough to Blafingame Harvey’s.
6th. That the road is not kept in repair from Buck-bead
iridge to Queenlborough town.
7th. That the road is not kept in repair from Rae’s Cow
ien to Demery’s ferry, on Savannah river, and recommend
hat Mr. lihac Perry, and Mr. William M‘Novrell be ap
lointed Commiflioners for laid road.
Bth. That the road is not kept in repair from Odom’s
erry to Rocky creek.
9th. That the road is not kept in repair from the Beaver
lam at Fuflell’s old place to Boykin’s mill.
ictb. That the road is not kept in repair from Ford’s
tridge, on Rocky Comfort, to the county liue on M‘Bean«
nth. We recommend Bazill Grey Comraiflioner of the
road from M‘Beau to Rae’s Cowpen, in the room of Elias
Daniel, as the (aid Daniel is removed from the diftrid.
12th. Wc present as a grievance the Severity of the pre
sent Militia Aft
13th. We present the entries, as Appears in the tax lift,
to be erroneous. ,
14th. We present as a very great grievance the want of
aCourt-houfeand goal in Waynlborough.
15th. We present Colonel James M*Kay for being often
drunk, and swearing and quarelliug dreadfully, and a com
man Aifturher of the peace.
16th. We present Thomas Fuficll for being often drunk,
quarrelling and disturbing the peace.
17th. We do highly approve of his Honor the Chief
Justice’s sentiments and recommendation, on the fubjed of
the paper money, and are resolved to support its credit with
oic utmost of our power and influence;
18th. We present William Sapp, Esq. for mal-admini
illation in the oflice of the peace, on the information of John
Greene, El'q.
19th. We thank his Honor, the Chief Justice, for his
charge, and request that the lame, together with the above
presentments, be publiihed in the Gazette, and copies thereof
furniiiied to the Executive and Legidative bodies of the date.

in their Preferments, and were difeharged.

Mr. PRINTER,
IT is highly to the honor of these confederated republics,
that the wisdom and political prescience of the supremo
power of our common country has of late been direfted to
the feeure conveyance of the different mails throughout the
continent. Such salutary measures open a source whence the
mod interesting occurrences take a diffulive flow. By cir
culating every kind of public intelligence through an infinity
of dreams, we become acquainted with the sublime science of
government, and naturally contrail the progress of civilization
in one date with that of another. r
Thus the feeds of elegant literature are disseminated thro*
our free, extensive regions; an avenue to the grand temple of
science presents itfelf to the fans of men without diferimina
tion of rank or property ; and the liberty of the press beams
forth with resplendent ludre. —Hence originate humanity and
refinement, the legitimate children of friendly communication
and social intercourse.
Remotely fitaated ?.s we are { in the ample enjoyment of
all those b tellings, which profufely flow from an excellent
conflitation, and found laws ; the froallcft obftru&ion in the
channel of ufeful information mud be eventually pernicious.
The condition of the roads in this date calls ftrenuoully for
red refs i and drange it is, that no means have been yet adopt
ed (by persons appointed) to remedy a public evil.-—But the
