A Tlvid Picture of a Battle.
A lad asked General Averill how he
f»H in his first battle. The general
“Leaving out of consideration some
twenty odd Indian fights in which I was
engaged before the war, and hi one of
which J. was wounded so as to be obliged
to walk on crutches for nearly two years,
I will state that my first tight was Bnll
Bun, in 1861. My feeling on entering
the battle was, as I saw the enemy hast
ening to their position, that there was a
great and useless crime about to be com
mitted; the second, as I can remember
the whizzing and hurtling of the first
solid shot from the enemy through the
trees and tearing along the ground, was
of the fierce ami terrible force of a can
non ball; next I was startled, amazed
and horrified to see a man who had been
hit on the head by a fragment of shell
springing about and shedding blood
like a chicken with its head just stricken
off; after that wonder at the excitement,
amounting to a kind of delirium, of our
chief commanders, who galloped alxmt
yelling to any one who would keep still
enough to listen about what the enemy
were doing, and generally calling for re
cnforoements like frightened idiots;
then the woful lack of a capable com
mander of our forces, with a headquart
ers,was felt; and, to skip to the last., un
controllable indignation ami mortifica
tion at the failure of our army to win
the battle, as with the rear we withdrew
from the field. The only consolation to
be found was to know that the enemy
were not much, if any, bettor off than
ourselves in efficient handling. I trust
you will never be called upon to under
go such trying sensations,’
Six and a Half Tons of Diamonds.
Surely even Sindbad the Sailor never
ventured to compute his diamonds by
the ton. Six and a half tons of diamonds,
valued at about £40,000,000, are report
ed to have been extracted from four
African mines alone in the course of the
last few years. The other great diamond
field of the world is India, also a British
pomession. Everybody know s that Am
sterdam has hitherto been the centre of
the diamond-cutting industry of the
world, and in former times t here was a
good reason for this, as in London, at
least, the industry was extinct. But
everybody probably does not know that
of late years efforts have been success
fully made to reintroduce diamond cut
ting in England and that English ( ut
ters have beaten the Dutch in several
recent prize competitions. Considering
the enormous value of the trade- -the
United states alone, it is calculated, re
quires JL‘3,000,000 worth of cut diamonds
I>er annum —care should be taken that
English diamonds should be out in Eng
land, and not be sent either to Amster
dam or to Antwerp and Paris, which
have lately endeavored to secure a por
tion of the Dutch trade. —Nf. James (7a

Queer Slate of Things.
A curious complication has arisen in
consequence of the murder of the Wool
folk family by Tom Woolfolk, near Ma
con, Ga., which was one of the most re
volting tragedies of this generation. The
murderer now lies iff jail under sentence
of death, and he has been approached by
the heirs of both his murdered father and
mother. Noone but the condemned man
knows the particulars of the crime. If
he killed his father first, his mother’s heirs
will conn* into the property; but if his
mother died first, his two surviving sis
ters and himself succeed to the property.
A full confession from this monster is e\
petted before his execution, in order to
clear up this point.

The Correct Time. '
There are very few men who do not pride
themselves on always having the correct time;
and wonderful and delicate mechanisms are
devised to enable them to do so. But the more
delicate a chronometer is made, the more sub
ject. it becomes to derangement, and unless it
be kept always perfectly clean, ft soon loses its
usefulness. What wonder, then, that the hu
man machine—so much more delicate and in
tricate than any work of Man—should require
to be. kept thoroughly cleansed. The liver is
the main-spring ot this complex structure.and
on the impurities left in the blood by a disor
dered liver, depend most of tlie ills that flesh
is heir to. Even consumption (which is lung
scrofula), is traceable to the imperfect action
of this organ. Kidney diseases, skin diseases,
sick headache, heart disease, dropsy, and a
long catalogue of grave maladies have their
origin in a torpid or sluggish liver. Dr. Pierce's
Golden Medical Discovery, by establishing a
healthy, normal action of the liver, acts as a
cure and preventive of these diseases.

""" ‘Golden Medical Discovery? An elderly lady
relative of mine had been a great sufferer from salt-rheum lor
upwards of fort y years. The disease was most distressing in her
hands, causing the skin to crack open on the inside of the lingers
at the joints and between thr tinkers. She was obliged to protect
the raw places by means of adhesive plasters, salves, ointments and
bandages, and during the winter months had to have her hands
dressed daily. The pain was quite severe at times and her general
health was badly affected, pas ing the way for other diseases to
creep in. Catarrh sin.l rheumatissn caused a great deal of suffering
in addition to the salt-rheum. She had used faithfully, and witii
the most commendable perseverance, all the remedies prescribed
by her physicians, but without obtaining relief. She afterwards
began tr- iting herself by drinking t‘as made from blood-purify
