The Fires We Have to Fight.
“Do you know how half the most
dangerous fires start?” asked an old
fireman. A woman had just gone
I into tlie basement with a wooden box
! filled with hot ashes. “Well, that wo
man illustrates it to perfection. They
will put ashes in a box or barrel and
then take them down to the cellar. The
first thing you known live coal in the
ashes sets fire to the barrel, and then
you have an awful lot of smoke that
maybe suffocates somebody.
“Then again, it makes a fire bad for
the fireman to fight, for they cannot lo
cate it. It is down a cellar, and the cel
jar ij} filled with ptuoke. 1 tell you
the firemen use plenty of ‘cuss’ words
when they are called to a lire like that.
Always put ashes in a tin vessel,” and a
passing ear carried the speaker away
toward the quarters of his engine com

A TEACHER in one of our grammar

the art of putting words into sentences.
The words selected, with their defini

“effervesce, to work.” One of the sen
tences handed in was, “My father is an
aqueduct, and has to effervesce very
hard.”

Much discussion has arisen already in
Berlin as to the location of the great
equestrian monument which will be
erected to the late Kaiser. Public pref
erence is about equally divided between
the Parisien Platz, which is at the west
end of the Under den Linden, and a po
sition in the Opcrahaus Platz at the east
ern extremity, where Frederick the
Great’s splendid memorial is already
reared, or in the space further along in
front of the old Schloss. The Vosnche
Zeitung declares, however, that the old
Kaiser long ago decided that the location
should be in the Thiergaicn, near the
column of Victory.

Spring
Medicine
At no ther season does the human system so much
need the aid of a reliable medicine like Hood’s Bar
suparill i as now. The impoverished condition of
the blood the weakening effects of the long, cold
winter, the ’ost appetite, and that tired feeling, all
make a good spring medicine absolutely necessary.
Hood's Sarsaparilla is peculiarly adapted for this
purpose and Increases in popularity every year.
Hood’s
Sarsaparilla
Is carefully prepared from Sarsaparilla, Dandelion,
Mandrake, Dock, Fipslssewa, Juniper Berries, and
other well known vegetable remedies, in such a
peculiar manner as to derive the full medicinal
value of each. It will cure, when in the power of
medicine, scrofula, salt rheum, sores, boils, pimples,
all humors, dyspepsia, biliousness, sick headache,
Indigestion, general debility, catarrh, rheumatism

TREATING THE WRONG DISEASE.
Many times women call on their family physicians. suffering, as they imagine, one from dyspepsia, another from heart disease,
another from liver or kidney disease, another’from nervous exhaustion, or prostration, another with pain here or there, and in this way
they all present alike to themselves and their ease-going and indifferent, or over-busy doctor, separate and distinct diseases, for which if
he prescribes his pills and potions, assuming them to be such, when, in reality, they are all only symptoms caused by some womb .<
disorder. The physician, ignorant of the cause of suffering, encourages his practice until large bills are made. The suffering
patient gets no better, but probably worse by reason of the delay, wrong treatment and consequent complications. A proper
medicine, like Bit. Pierce'S Favorite Prescription, directed to the cause, would have entirely removed the disease, thereby dis
pelling all those distressing symptoms, and instituting comfort instead of prolonged misery.
