Arrest Of Canvassers

was demanded of U. S- Attorney
v General Toni Clark and Georgia
Acting- Governor M. E. Thompson
early today to guarantee the con¬
stitutional rights of petition and
free elections in Columbus, Ga., by
the People’s Progressive Party of
Georgia.
The demand was made shortly
after midnight invasion by nine
armed men of the sleeping quar¬
ters of seven campaign workers
for Henry A. Wallace, in the Tour¬
ist Hotel, 1320 Fourth Ave., Co¬
lumbus. The four men and three
women were forced at gunpoint
into their ear and driven 30 miles
to Hamilton, Ga. The armed men
then made the threat that violent
treatment would be meted out to
them should they attempt to re¬
turn to Columbus and continue
their solicitation of signatures on
petitions to place Wallace and
other Progressive Party candidates
on the ballot.
