CANT PHRASES.
jA-S found as nut, o’er the plain
I of late whittled, chock full of glee,
A Granger roforrow and pain,
At happy, as happy could be.
As plump as a partridge I grew,
My heart being lighter than cork;
My (lumbers were calmer than dew ?
M y body was fatter than pork I
Thu i happy I hop’d ! Ihould pass,
Sleek asgreafe down the current of
time:.
But pleasures are brittle as glaft,
Ah ho’ as a fiddle they’re line.
Jemima the pride of the vale,
Like a top nimbly danc’d o’er our
plains ;
tVith envy the lasses were pale—
With wonderftood gaping the (wains.
She I Ti ll’d like a balket of chips—
As tall as a May pole her file—*
As (wee l as inolaffes her lips—.
bright is a button her eyes.
Admiring, I ga2\l on each charm,
My peace that would trouble so soon,
And thought not of danger, nor harm,
Any more than the man in the moon.
But now to my sorrow I find,
Her heart is as hard as a brick ;
To my paflion forever unkind,
Tho’ of pallion I’m full as a tick.
1 fought her affsrtions to win,
In hopes of obtaining relief,
Till I like a hatchet grew min,
And Hie like a haddock grew deaf.
1 late was as fat as a doe,
And playlomc and l'pry as a cat;
But now I am dull as a hoe,
And leart and as weak as a rat.
Unless the nnpitying fates.
With paflion as ardent (hall cram her,
As certain as death or as rates.
I soon (hall be dead as a hammer

The folio ving circumstances attend
ed the late attempt to aifalfinate the
Duke regent of Sweden. The Court
was at Drotrninghohn a palace about
Ax in les from Stockholm ; in the even
ing of Sunday the nth of October,
when he was experted to retire from
his mitlrefs Slottberg, three aflafiins
waited for him, in a court yard or gar
den which separates her apartments from
the palace; but one of the gentlemen
of the Court going firft, was by them
xniftaken for the Duke when they dis
charged a pirtol loaded with three bul
lets, which fortunately only palled
through the sleeve of his great coat;
they afterwards ran up to him, but find
ing their mistake, they exclaimed, it
was a damned (hot, and fled, throwing
away a pistol, which may poilibiy be
tray them. A proclamation wasiffued
the next day, offering a reward of 4000
rix dollars, equal to a thousand pounds,
for the d'fcovery of the offenders.
The events that haveoccured on the
Rhine, have at length been noticed in
one of the legislative bodies. Merlin
of Thionville, who was supposed to be
Jhut up in Manheira, is returned to Pa
ris Immediately upon his return he
declared to the council of five hundred,
that the reports which had been circu
lated were either falfe or exaggerated ;
that the retreat of the French on the
other fide of the Rhine was made in
the be ft order; that Duffeldorff and
Manheim were ft ill in the peffcflion of
the republic, and that if the Austrians
did not makepeace they would be hem
rued in by two formidable armies.
Mons. Monneron, the French bank
er, and political negotiator, who went
back to Paris about a fortnight since,
is (hortly expected again at Dover in
bis former capacity.

Tuefday an address was read by
Commiflioner Froby, at his office in
Chatham dock yard, to all clafles of
workmen in that dock yard, intended
to‘be sent to his Majesty, congratulat
ing him on his late escape from afTaffi
nation, and to be signed by all belong
ing to the yard ; but from some cause,
the greatest part of the above work
men, in number about 1/00 or 1200,
affetubled an Wtdnefday morning in
tht rope house, attd fefufed signing if.
The commiffiener and officers of the
yard acquainted them there was no oc
casion for them to art contrary to their
inclination, but wished them to go a*
bout their refpertive duties, which they
did not; and in the afternoon nearly
r'i whole absented themselves, and
wear o rochefter, to sign the petition
