the Democratic party, but to the aid of the
men who heretofore have been its oppo

to the National bank monopoly; that the
volumo of currenoy should be enlAi-ged,
and there should be tariff for revenue
only.
Tho Gazette. Bays*. On a platform of re
pudiation, inllation, anti-temperance, and
general cussedness, the Democratic party

Columbus, Ohio, October 14.—Suffi-

Chattanooga, October 14.—Tho Con
vention was called to order at 10 a. in.
yesterday by Gen. Andrew Mill, of Texas,
ono of the Vice Presidents. The delib
erations opened with prayer by Moore
colored, of Georgia. An enthusiastic
old man from Alabama thanked God for
the meeliug of tho Convention, as iu a
multitude of counsellors there is wisdom.
Some one from Texas hoped that smoking
would not bo allowed, us it made him
sick.
The chairman of tho committeo on
facts and statistics desired to receive te-
poris of outrages.
The Committeo on Correspondence an
nounced that they were ready to report.
They read a letter from ex-Govoruor Da
vis, of Texas, and ono from Mr. BrewNter,
of Alabama. After tho chairman of the
Committee had buugled over a few pages
of Davis’ letter, the Govoruor came for
ward and read it himself. It was very
long, occupying an hour in its delivery,
and was a labored effort to prove tbat tho
same spirit actuatod tho white portion of
the Southoru people us iu I860 and 1861,
and that a new rebellion was forming.
In regard to corruption, ho said Kel
logg and Mohch might bo corrupt, but
knowing the Democrats an ho did,
their assertions to that effect was proof to
to tho contrary in his mind. He thought
Sumner’s plan of wiping out State lines
in tho South wisest, but that was impossi
ble. He favored compulsory education
by Congress, and prompt relief when the
State officos arc seized by fraud and cor
ruption.
The North Carolina delegation, W. G.
Kennedy and George VV. Price, reported
and took their scats.
An address from Brewster, of Monroe,
La., was road, to the effect that the great
want of the South is popular education,
which should he sustained by Congress,
and which should teach morality and obe*
dienco to the law, not to admire assassins
and murderers. Equal rights and justice
to oil should be maintained.
A resolution was offered endorsing the
Civil Rights bill and denying A. II.
Stephens’ assertion that the colored peo
ple did not wish it, which was referred to
the Committee on Resolutions.
Committees on schools, on publication
and to collect outrages, were appointed
