DAILY ENQUTR&R - SUN: COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, THURSDAY MORNING, MARCH T, 1877.
HIMb,
New Tort Kvenlng Pool.]
It bu boon aomawbat moto than a jaar
nnoo the Evening Poet Brat suggested
the propriety of heating town* and eltiee
by (team, the ateem to be (nmiahed to
hoaoeboiden by a oompany. precisely u
gas ia already furniafaed. When we made
tbio anggeation, and pointed oat the de
sirability of ita adoption, we had little
doubt that in doe time aome oompany
would aet upon it, hot we had little rea-
ooo to expeot that praotteal meaaurea
would follow aa speedily aa they bare
done.
Tba oompany whloh ia about to under
take the work of aupplying beet to the
houeae, ohurehea, faotoriea, abopa and
□ffioeeat Lookport, N. Y., haa adopted
preoiaely the plan whioh the Evening Poet
auggaated, and the men who are engaged
in tbe eaterpriae hare ao little doubt of
their aueeeaa that they will begin by
building aa adequate eet of worka at con
siderable eoat. There ia really no prob
lem to be aolred in the matter, ao exper
iment to be mad*. The problema were
long ago wrought out in the heating of
large pablie bnildinga, inns and faotoriea
by atanm, and the new application of the
principle dUfera from the old one in waya
whioh favors ita auooaaa. One aet of
workmen ia required for eaoh battery of
boilera, whether the work of the battery
ia to beat a aingle building or a dozen
blooka; and, if ateem hett ia eheaper
than anyolher, when applied by individ
ual effort to aingle buildiage of ooneid-
erable aiae, the aeving muat be mnoh
greater when a aingle aet of workmen
attend the boilera that faraiah heat to all
the houaea within an area of half a mile
square.
There ia room for the adoption of tbia
plan, profitably, here in New York and
Brooklyn, and tha time ia propitioua for
beginning now. while labor ia oheap,
while the weather ia oold, and whila
houaaholda are keenly alive to the annoy-
anoe of tire-making and lire-maintenance
in their dwellings. There ia no good
reaeon for postponing the matter to await
the reault of the Lookport undertaking,
u the uae of ateam in tbia way ia in no
proper aenae an experiment. Onoe in
troduced in theeemtiaa ;ateam will aoon
beoome aa mnoh a matter of eourae ai
water ia now. The Bridgets and Qretch'
ens, whoae drat question now at the pres
liminary oonferenoe whioh precedes their
engagement baa reference to stationary
tub and other modern improvements, may
soon insist also upon having ateam heat,
and landlords may find it impoasible to
let houses into whioh this latest modern
improvement has not been introduced.
We shall then live in a real age of steam.
Mr. Holly haa written a book in whioh
he seta forth fully his plan for supplying
ateam for heating and doing all the va
rious machine labor of oitiea and villages,
domastio, merohantile, manufacturing,
etc. Heaaya:
“In oitiea or townr of from 3,000 to
8,000 inhabitants, where the main busi
ness portion does not exoeed one-half
mile square, one set of boilers, looated
near the center of the place, with pipes
leading out in four direotions, will do all
the work If the eity is one mile square,
four seta of boilers will be neoeaaary. The
main pipes that leave the boilers will be
four ineh, and will diminish to three,
two and one-half, two, one and one-half,
and one inoh at the extreme end away
from the boilers, the main of four inohes
continuing as the use along the lines may
demand. The main pipes are placed about
four feet below the surface of the eartb.
The iron pipes are first oovered with
asbestos, and then put in wood pipes two
inohes thiok, leaving a spaoe for oonfined
air between the asbestos and wood. The
outside pipe keeps all water and moisture
from the steam pipe and prevents conden
sation. The pipes, both wood and iron,
are put down in lengths of two feet, when
they terminate in hollow, upright post.,
firmly seoure'd in the earth. The upper
part of this post ia arranged so as to re
ceive the ends of the steam pipes through
stuffing boxes to allow the pipes to expand
and eontraet without moving the post.
The posts are also arranged so as to re
ceive the endB of the service pipes either
with or without expansion joints. The
service pipes are not taken direotly from
the mains, bnt from the hollow
supports, thus allowing thorn to be
attaohed or detaohed from the support in,
stead of passing through the outside
wooden pipe to enter the steam pipe,
whioh could not be done beoause the
steam pipe expands and contracts, while
the wooden pipe does not. This over
comes one of the most important
objections to the uae of long lines of
underground ateam pipes, when branch
pipes are to be taken off. Another objec
tion has been condensation. This the
abeatos icduoes about threesfonrths, and
the air spaoe and wooden pipe will reduce
it still'further. Tests made during the
month of July, with very small pipe,
prove that the ateam may be oarried
through well-protected pipes for a mile,
and then be more economical than any
other system. But it ia thought that
1,200 or 1,500 feet eaoh way, making a
half-mile square, ia about all that need
be furnished from one looation. This,
even in a oity with a population of 1,500,
would inolude nearly all the business
plaoes, hotels, ohurehea and schools.
Buildings further out oould be reached by
a single line of small pipe. Steam oan
be manufactured on a large soale for one
fourth the oost that it oan on a small soale,
fer warming a single dwelling or blook
You can atop the expense at any time by
turning the steam-cook in your house,
whereas in tba use of a private boiler,
whan you shot off the steam, combustion
goes on just the same. There is about
150 oubie feet of hot air per minute lost
through the chimney.

Idle. Aimee has lost her dog. He was
a blaok and tan terrier, with long ears,
the joy and the pride of bis mistress,
Wherever sbe went there went he also.
While she aang the immortal strains of
Offenbach, Didi—for that was the poodle ’r
name—dozed in the moat oapaoions pook

room, and, when she took her daily walks,
he frisked at her heels. MUe. Aimee saw
him about six mpntba ago at Montreal,
when she pnrobased him for $100. Since
then, as Mr. Maurice Grau, her manager,
relates, Didi’s arrival baa preceded every
where the advent of the oompany. I
was a beautiful blaok and tan, with a very
animated tall, whioh, on good dog author
ity, oan ba described as delioately thin
and beautifully tapering towards the end;
with silken ears, a plump satin breast, as
smooth and shiny as silver armor, and the
tiniest, daintiest legs ever “Why,
MUe. Aimee would not have taken $&Oo

beautiful eoat of blue doth trimmod with
rad velvet, and his collar, with ita tink
ling bell, was of the prettiest design.

* WEST or THB STINGING INSECTS nr a PAL-
AOK CAB, AND HOW THEY STtBUKD UP
TUB PASSENGERS.
As the Missouri Pacifie train was leav
ing Miller’s Landing, Monday night, a
gentleman oame aboard oarrying a stick,
to whioh was curiously attaohed a hor
nets’ nest. He had found it in the woods,
and it bad the appearanoe of being ten*
antless. But when brought into the warm
atmosphere of the oar and plaoed near the
stove, the heat soon awakened its dorm
ant life, and a low, hamming noise front
the interior warned the embryo natural-,
ist and his companions in destined misery
that the sorrow was about to begin. A
frantic effort to throw the naet from the
window released the imprisoned insects,
and the next instant they swarmed
through the oar, each individual hornet
armed with fury and savagely bent on
the war-path. They struok right and left
and everywhere left in their trail a ory of
agony. Women shrieked and men vented
curses loud and deep. Bnt the sorrow
waxed spaoe and the misery tnoreaaed.
People tumbled over seats and grov
elled on the floor. One fat old lady took
a recumbent position and sticking her
abnormally developed, pedal extremities
straight up in the air, executed an evolu
tion that would have done oredit to Sol-
dene's kioker. Polonaises were torn and
scattered in promiscuous oonfusion and
abapely extremities were exposed in a
frautio search for hornets that had ventur
ed in directions which hornets have no
right to penetrate. Bald-headed men
mopped their shining pa tea in agony and
d—d the fool who had turned that happy
oar into a carnival of pain. Boshing to
the resoue of his beleaguered passengers,
Oonduotor King was met on the threshold
with suoh a warm reception that hia ina
quiry, “What the devil ?’’ may not
have been ao far wrong after all. But
the conductor only clasped his lips with
both hands and commenced an Indian
war danoe in perfeot keeping with the
oonduot of hia passengers. He seeming
ly lost all anxiety to inquire any further,
or if hiB cuiiosity was not appeased he
prudently refrained from expressing it.
Finally the doors and wiudowa were
thrown open and the hornets began to
leave the oar. In a little while only a few
stray onea were left, and these the pas
sengers kindly refrained from hurrying,
but allowed to take their time, which,
everything considered, was magnanimous
on the part of people who had undergone
so muon discomfort on acoount of the in
trusion of the hornets.
