Taylor, on his first, were «"* n B an 7 bnt 8 bolll > “ 8 “'y oour8e ' ’WILL they be confirmed t This is the question of the day with re gard to Hayes’ nominations for tha Cabi net We do not see well how they oan be defeated. The Democrats, generally, will vote for them and it ia believed there are sufficient moderates among the Re publicans to cany all through. With Morgan and Grover admitted, and Louis iana and South Carolina left out, thare are thirty-four Democrats in the Benate and thirty-eight Republican*. This estimate excludes Sherman who ia among the Cabi net appointees. Bo only .the aooeasion of a few Republicans is required oonflrm Hayes' whole party. The Republicans of the Benate bava evinced individual spleen and hate to a remarkable degree. Even Sherman, tha most bitter partisan of the rabid Republi cans, was referred to a committee on the objection of Simon Cameron. This waa against all preoedent. The Southern Uadioals will do all they can to defeat the nomination of Mr. Key. His Fraudulenoy evinoea a determina tion to stiok to his favorite*. He threat ens, if the nomination* are not confirmed this week, he will issue orders withdraw ing troops from the Southern Btatea, a consummation most devoutly to be de sired, and which will result in good to the entire oountry. The extremists, under the leadership of Blaine, will use every resource in their power to defeat the Southern polioy of Mr. Hayes. Their purpose is to crush, where they cannot rule. Blaine an nounced his readiness to stand by the “remnant” of Uepublioaniam in the South and “bis orowd” applauded him. Blaine has mounted Morton's worn bobby and will ride it to the death while old Moxa looks pityingly on and hesitates which will be best—to earn the patronage of Hayes or follow the riotous “favorite son of Maine,” and attempt a rivalship in the bloody shirt-business. Thus, they are arrayed against each other and the scene exceedingly grotesque—the burly Blaine, Moxa Morton and strutting Conk- ling, all utterly disgusted with Hayes and hating each other. The Democrats meanwhile calmly await developments. They are stronger than they have been, and their might ia appre ciated and feared. The Republicans will not dare attempt the oppresaive move ments of old. The Democrat* will have the Senate in 187!). Now they are biding Iheir time, and awaiting the mistakes of the enemy. If Mr. Iiayea will bold his troops off and reeognize no onq, they have no fears of the future of Louisiana and South Carolina, and the restora tion of local self-government. If Mr. Hayes will do, as he now indioatea, he will have their support in all fair and lib eral measures, and with this gained it will be impossible for the extremists ever to reduce him to the position of Presi dent Johnson. It is a singular fight, totally unexpeot' ed by Republicanism, and cornea like a shook on the very threshold of the ad' ministration. Cheating and stealing never did thrive. NO COMPIIOM1NEU, IF YOU PLEASE. It is intimated in the dispatches of yesterday that a compromise commission will probably be sent to Louisiana and Sonth Carolina, with Wheeler at the |iead. We trnst not. Onr leaders and journals should oppose such a measure with all their might. The Sonth has ever lost by half way measures. The Democrats have very lately been taught the folly of pur. inaugurated on March 9th. There was no doubt of their election. Hayes, un certain concerning hia position was sworn in on the 3d, and formally inaugurated on the 9th. A wains in tha New York Timet, da ting his communication Mobile, February 22d, at length speaks of “the fitness of the Hon. Bamuel F. ltioe, of Alabama, for the position” on the U. 8. Supreme hen oh, made vacant by the resignation of Judge Davis. • Courier-Journal: George Washington t waa not sworn in and inaugurated until eight weeks after the time designated in 1789. He was in no hurry, waa elected by the people, aa Tilden was, and Boom ed to aneak into a back room and be se- cretly sworn in seventeen hours before the legal time. Tan Democrats carried the municipal election of Galveston, Texas, on the 9th, by nearly three thousand majority, and elected eleven of the twelve aldermen. Many negroes voted the Democratic tiok- *4, and in on* ward where the colored population predominated a leading negro politician waa badly beaten by a white Democrat. To the Chicago Tribune George Alfred Townsend presents g sublime spectacle ia his grand and unparalleled aot of com posing a Democratic letter to the Cincin nati Enquirer with his left hand, and a Republican letter to the New York Graph ic with hia right hand, and an Independ ant letter to the Philadelphia Timee with a pen firmly olenohed in his leonine jaws. Rsunzu) very sensibly observes: “The friends of the Nioholla and Hamp ton governments do not ask that Hayes reoognisa them, but that he merely re frain from reeognizing anybody.” Pack ard, for inatanoe, in a state of non-reoog nition (no troops at hia disposal), will vanish—melt away. Nioholla will aland and the State of Louisiana will sustain him. Existuo laws provide for the needs of the Army until June 80,1877. Itiasuggest- ed that, under the operation of some old statute, the Navy and War Departments may be carried on for two years, the lack of specific appropriations being supplied by a clause which allow* the Secretary of the Treaaury to honor the drafts of tbs Secretary of War and the Secretary of the ■avy. The Republican* are anxious to avoid an extra session of Congress. It is Intimated hi* Frauduleocy will call tha body together in June. Mae Fighter Arrestee. Naw Tone, March 8.—Joe Goes was •Treated on the requisition of the Govern or of Kentucky for prise fighting, and loakad up. of yielding to nothing except supe rior force, aud then under protest. A few years ago one of these compromise Con gressional delegations visited Lonis- itna, and Mr. Wheeler was a prom inent member. We all know the result. Kellogg was retained in power, and Pinohbaok narrowly esoaped being made United States Senator. As a consequence, the Returning Board waa established in fnller authority, and the last disgraoefnl decision in the State and Presidential elections was the effect. We have had enough of such experiments. They are losing operations every time Democracy consents to them. There iB ever a major ity of Republican members who work for their own parly. The Electoral Commis sion is another severe lesson on the folly of compromises. It looked bo just and fair. The result is aadly known and felt. The Democrats are hardly so foolish as to consent to another Better have Ilayes recognize Packard and Chamberlain at once than have any Re publican committees nosing around so aa to arrange fora Returning Board tooonnt in their men at the next election—taking the substance for the carpet bagger and scalawag and leaving the shadow for wealth and intelligence. Let na have no more Wheelerisin in the South. Tha dote is already sufficiently nauseous and none desire a repetition. Resist by every law ful means, bnt let ns take bold stands, claim our rights, demand them, and so* ccpt nothing loss than their full measure. We should have no compromise commit tees unless absolutely eertain they are composed of a majority of Deiuoorats. A St ONT HISUUIEVOUa LETTER. The letter of Mr. H. A. Haralson, pub lished the other day, severely condemning Governor Colquitt, beoanse he did not give Mr. H. an appointment, has been published very generally in the North, either in full or .giving the purport. It eannot do the writer the least good, and he baa furnished food for the sooffe and jeers of Republicans who bate a South' ern Democratic State aa the devil does holy water. The impreaaion abroad ia injurious. Oar enemies do not look upon it •• the wailing and gnashing of a dis appointed offioe seeker, because it ia not their interest to do so. They assume ell to be true because temporarily it may subserve their purposes. In this it is a subject of regret. In our State, however, it falls harmless except on Mr. Haralson- The oonfidenoe of the people in the uprightness and integrity of the Governor to whom they gave 81,000 ma jority ia sot in the least impaired. He baa done ndthing to forfeit their esteem aud affection, and his appointments have given veiy general satisfaction to all exoept some of those who failed to get plaoes. Positions could not bo given to ovary on* I of tha tbouaasds of applicants. Mr. Haralson hM vary materially affected hia own interests. Whenever ba takas aids* in future the people generally will regard that ha ia doing so on tbs promise or expectancy of a prios. Ha oould not have chosen a surer course for destroying opinion* in regard to his Independence of action. 'Tie true, 'tie pity, but tha pity is 'tin true. Gentlemen should never parade their griefs in pub. lio, for they will axaroiae a telling effeot in future judgments. Better bear the ills wa have than fly to those we know not of. In publishing thia latter, Mr. Haralson has seriously injured himself, and tha shaft aimed at Gov. Colquitt fell harm- lass. An Abu Sbbmon and Popolab Pbeach- ZB.—We pnbllsh this morning a sermon on the situation, delivered by Rev. Thomas Da Witt Talmage In Brooklyn, last Sunday and reported in the Herald next day. It ia worth reading, and por tions will find an echo in every heart. Mr. Talmage ia a Naw Jeiaey man by birth and ia now forty-five years of age. Ha graduated at the New York University, and subsequently at the New Brunswick, (N. J.,) Tbeologiosl Seminary, and waa ordained pastor of the Reformed Dntob Church in Belleville, N. J., in 1896. He waa pastor of the Reformed Dntoh Chnroh in Syracuse, N. Y., and afterwards of the Second Chnrob in Philadelphia and in 1869 became pastor of tha Central Presby terian Chnroh in Brooklyn, in which offloe he still continues. Ia 1870, hia congregation erected a new chnroh, known as the “Brooklyn Tabernaole,” semi-oiroular, of wood and iron, capable of seating 3,400 persons, and waa en larged in 1871 to seat 900 more. This was burned December 22, 1872. On Feb ruary 22,1872, a new Tabernacle was dedi cated, built in Gothic style, of brick, but retaining the semi-circular arrangement, and stating 9,000 persons. It is the largest Protestant chnroh in America. It is maintained by voluntary offerings, with no pew rents. Mr. Talmage’s ser mons are delivered extempore. He sIho edits a religion! paper, and has organized a lay oollcge for religious instruction. He bss published several volumes of ser ous. Tax disappearance of Judge Wright, of the Bouth Carolina Supreme Court, hM elietited the atory of tha means used by tha Chamberlain people to indnoe him to recant bis derision against the legality of the Hampton Government. One re markable expedient vu the sending v>f a band of colored women to prey for a fa vorable derision on thair knees at the Judge’s feet. Wright was firm for while, bnt finding that the pressure was great went to Governor Hampton and in timated that abont $100,000 was neeeed to stiffen his backbone. The Governor replied: “You oan go to the devil, would not buy any of you. I was told that I could buy over eertain Senators to recognize me in the Legislatnre, bnt I told them that I did not intend to use any money for that purpose." It is be lieved in Colombia that the opionion em bodying Wright’s seoond decision was written by Chamberlain himself. Inti motions are given that the boll-dozed Judge it atill at the oapitol, bnt aeoreted, and that for a consideration he oonld be induoed to retract his recantation. Two StiPBzm Courts.—The probabil ities are there will be two in South Caro line. Gov. Hampton will appoint a Chief Justioe to fill tha position made vacant by the death of Chief Justioe Moses. He will be reooguised by Associate Justice Williard and confirmed by the Hampton Senate. Cbemberlain will also, unless foroed ont, appoint one and ha will proba bly be reoognised by Assooiate Justioe Wright, oolored, and oonfirmed by Cham berlain'a Senate. Thus there will be two jnrisdietiona. A way ont of all this diffi culty is for President Hayes to stand aloof, let the parties alone, and as Cham berlain and bis gang oan gat no money they will aoon subside. The bayonets must be kept in the Slate or Chamberlain must cease the endeavor to exercise au thority. RATH 5*35 PBUTIOE. Tha Republican split grows bitterer every boar, and aaama to be Irreconcilable. Blaine ia on tha war path to-day, and Hayes ia just M determined. Stanley Matthews said to Gen.
