The south and southeastern ooasmons of the oity an of no nee to Columbus, and yean and yean most elapse before they oan be otilixed for building pur poses, if ever tba oeoeaaity arises. Tbs portion between the oity and the river ia being washed away. The old Fair Grounds could be converted into a beautiful park, and the qnerter west of that could be re claimed without a great degree of trouble. If tba right direction be given it oan be oovered with tress of forest growth, and a most delightfnl shade created. Thia dona, it would furnish a charming place for re creation, a resort for pleasnn and grate ful exercise. Tba improving might be made a species of general gratification, in which people of every class could partici pate. Let the Oity Council paaa a regulation appropriating those grounds for park pnrpoeea, and fixing one day in the year aa a time for the entire population to en gage in the planting of trees. Wa believe handrails in the oity would unite in the object with great glea, and consider the occupation rare fan. Everybody would unite, and singly or in groups select thair trees, plant them and watch and oars for their growth. It would prove an annual feast in whioh all might enter with zest and glea. Old and yonng, middle age, youth and maiden, fathers, mothers and children could have a real jolly time and maka pastime of tha labor required. In a short period they would find the fruits of their genial employment in lovely shades, and havs a cooling forest within a convenient dis tance, wboee delights would remain per petnal, and whoa# beauty would ba an. hanoed aa tba years roll on. One would experience a fascination in oaring for that which ha had tended, and regard it as an object of hie own creation. The only benefit in Council's naming a day would ba the giving of oflloial sanction and ape proval to tha undertaking. We do not have sufficient holidays in onr land. There ia too much toil pud confinement. Sooial pleasures are not anflloiently anoouraged and out-door amusements are few and far between. In the inauguration of the plan we pro pose, Columbus oould appreciate hours spent in merry relaxation from business cares, and while all the freedom of a glad some boy returned from school could be attained and shared, one would feel that something waa being accomplished which would be a joy forever. In time, it would grow into a welcomed custom, and the anniversary ba looked for with gayest an ticipations. In the olden countries wa have often read of suoh reunions for such purposes, and it would be well to import many of the oheerful associations of tha worlds that antedate by us centuries. Lets' have an annual tree planting, in which all oan en gage, end made a day of real jollity, the naeful combined with an oat door amuse ment, productive of pleasure in tbe pres ent and unspeakable blessings in tha time to oome.
