The greatest tramps in the world are printers that love to roam. We have met many who wa believe have touched foot to every oroastie on tha prinoipal roads in Amerloa. They are satisfied with no plaoe, and after a brief realdenee there they hie away, and foot it elsewhere. They get meals somehow. They never have money. Their “sab" money ia gen erally apant for “good dram," and occa sionally for an extraordinary “equare meal, "bat for the latter they will never pay if tbay can beat it out of some one. Their great trinmph ia whan they ean “knock down" a railroad ride. That’s the luxury of business to them. They rarely oome to Colombo, now, bat have been freqnent visitors. Two ware hare week. They had tramped thither from Ohiosgo via New York. When Hampton was returning from Washington they, in the night time, bad slipped upon the roof of bia ear, and there rode aixty miles unchallenged. Late at night at a station the conductor's eab stopped jnst opposite where they were, and commenced making them targets for his revolver. They waited not to ask him at whom he was shooting, bat shot themselves off that roof qniek aa a flash. It was not a time to propound eonnun- drama, bat for sliding—and they slid. They did not try that train again, and whenever another ride is stolen they will oarefolly watch for oondnotora oabs. The pntlie School malt. It will begin this morning at 9 o'clock in Baioh’i Garden and oloae at snn-set. This will be a day of joy and glee for the ohildren. The Italian string band will discourse the mnsio. The parents and friends of the ohildren of the school are invited to attend and bring Innehea if they see flt. Refreshments will be tar nished for the children, besides every thing that may haigbten the pleasures of the day. The jail at Seals is now empty with the exoeption of Meinioka who has appealed to the Supreme Court. Sheriff Perry left Seale Monday with John Copeland, sen tenced for three years; Fontaine Yonng, five years; Alfred Billups, three years—all negroes. The reoent law of the Legisla ture requires panitentiary confinement where the offeaoe is a felony the period for punishment for which is more than two yeara. Oar readers mast not infer from the word “troubles” in onr heading that we mean ohildren, for that is exaotly an idea that we do not wish to convey, though it is one coming therefrom. Whst we wish to express is that Matt never was bothered in the least by any of his ohildren and he gives a very philosophical explanation or reason for his statement. Every time that he was blessed with the advent of a “pro- oioua,” he took his banjo jnst before the infant took its first nap or sleep and raised “a h-U of a noise” immediately over its bead to habitnate it to anything that might grate upon its tympanum, that never as long as it lived wonld it be easily waked by slight sonnds and be continually disturbing its fond paternal anoestor. by hideous cries. He says that the in fants never failed to doze off immediately under the raoket, and while growing up, an earthquake couldn't wake one or pre vent it from going to sleep. He never allowed one of them to be jumped up and down and hmnnied or sang to sleep, for, knowing the powers of use and habit, he wonld let them play an engagement with Morphenqtf they felt inolined without using any means to prejudioe them in fa vor of or aganist “nature’s sweet restorer.’’ Never in his life, he positively asserts, has he ever been waked at night by any of his seions, and he soeoants for it by never humoring any of their whims, and by letting them do the best they oan when they are inolined to raise a row. This is very good reasoning, and Matt ia anraly no aoiolist in tha matter. The Pood of thi Btrogglor. The blackberry orop promises as usual to be very abundant. This never fails. The vines wait until all the frosts era gone and then pat forth their tiny blos soms to ripen into the riob long blaok- berry, that is food for many. The town darkey that ia listless and trifling shivers through the winter and basks In the spring sunshine, ekeing oat existence as best he oan without work, knowing that the months will roil around after awhile whieh will bring this fruit in abnndanoe, and then he oan feed to heart's oontent. It is free to all. The tramp is in his glory in blackberry-time, and oares not how many rebuffs he receives. He knows ha is safe for every roedaide presents tempt ing and lnaoions plenty. The blaokborry ia essentially the poor man’s friend, and in due time it appears all ready and in vites the pluoking. It is the support of thousands. In tbs season little children crowd the market-house with baskets fall of the berries, and aftar a time they be- eome so cheap they are almost given away. In its plenteooanaaa and certainty it surpasses everything in the trait line. Young Men’s Catholic Union. THff THIRD ANNUAL NIO-NIO I The train left Broad street depot in thia eity yesterday morning at 8 o'olook with about two hondrad persons aboard for Hatoheehnbbee, to participate in tha pleasures of the Catholic Union pie-nio. En route two gentlemen lost their hata, one of wbioh jumped off while the train was in motion to reoover his cover end had to travel on the gravel traia a dis tance of two miles to reaeh his destiny, while the other remained aboard and pur chased a protector for bis dsfsnoslsss hesd st tbs next station. Tbs party ar rived st Hatoheehnbbee about 9:30 a. m. and walked tbenoe to the pleasnre ground! adtstanoe of one mile through .continuous send bed. This pleasant resort is situa ted on the premises of Messrs. Kyle A Naokolls and is shaded by beeatifal oe- dtrs end umbrageous oaks. THE DAHCINO was in order soon after arriving and was continued until about 12 o’olook, when all aoattered off into groups for dinner. The mnsio was famished by the colored string band of this eity. Direolly after dinner the T ABO XT PBAOTIOB for the ladies took pleas. They shot the Flobert riffs, a distanoe of forty feet. Twenty-seven oompeted for the prises, ths first being s fins silk end ivory fen, sad tha sseond s “t liter. ” The first prize was won by Mrs. J. M. DeLzoy of Hat* ebeohabbee, she having shot within one end ■ half inohez of the ball's eye ; end the seoond prize, whiah was offered for the poorest shot, was swarded to Mrs. Connor of this oity, she having missed the target. The titter was delivered by the worthy President of ths Ostholio Union, baosnss, he sold, he being s married man the boys forced it upon him. THE SACK BAOE. Five boys oompeted for the prize, z gold dollar, in the saok rtoe. It was won by Homer Dudley. This afforded z great deal of fan for the lookers-on, as well as for those who participated therein. The members of the Union did all in their power to make ths occasion a de lightful one, and'Jhey certainly snooeeded. The oitiseni o¥ Hateheohnbbee assisted liberally in making the day what it was, and not more clever people ean be found anywhere. CITY LIOHX GUARDS' HOP. It was given last night in their armory, and quite a desirable number attended— yea, enough that “the frame and huge foundation of the earth shook like a cow ard” ’neath their feet. It was well man aged and withal a very delightfal occa sion. The mnsio was discoursed by the Italian string band. Each gentleman ap peared to have some one with whom be was delighted, and apparently thonght to himself, “There is no living with thee or withont thee.” As wa have written all that oan be said and nothing bat true deserts, we will olose for fear that, be- oanse of onr verbosity, some one may say: "Thou wilt be ilka a lover presently, And tire tha hearer with a book ot words.” BLAH CHARD * HILL Ilenoeforth offer their entire stock of spring and summer goods at and below oost for oaab, and being truly reliable gentlemen, of eonrae they oan and will sell great bargains. Their stook is large, aeleet and varied and they oan pleaae all of their onatomers. Don’t delay, bA call immediately before the rash is so great that a satisfactory and earsful examination of their goods oen’t be had. There is no honse now with whieh any one will have a greater desire to trade than with this and it will take but a few days to dispose of it unless they oontinue to add vary rapidly to their line wbioh they will doubtless do for a very short while. It was no trouble for one to treat his triend when it was at five oents. Ths price is too high now end ths drunkards will hold an indignation zaeat- ing if something ia not dons to promote inebriety. —Wa have heard it said that paople with families do not like to trade with bachelors, because they have no interest in them. Now, there may be some mer chants of this class in the eity who have clerks who might be indnoed to marry if they conld see their way clearly, and ths only way for this to be accomplished ia for them (the clerks) to be taken as part ners into the establishment. A touching inoident has jnst ooourred in oonneotion with ths death of Lieuten ant William Van W. Reilly, who fall with Coster In that terrible fight on ths Little Big Horn lost year. At the time of ths battle he wore ■ seal ring with his crest eat apon it, and this, together with hia olothing, his sword, his pistols end all his belongings, was torn from his dead body and earried away by some one of ths fos who had helped kill him. Fatal diseases may be oansed by al lowing the bowels to beoome constipated end the system to remain in a disordered oondition, until the disorder has time to develop itself. An onnoe of prevention ia worth a pound of ante, is an old and trntbfal saying. Therefore, we edviae all who are troubled with the complaints now very prevalent—headache, indiges tion, disordered liver, want of appetite, naneea, or feverish skin, to take, withont delay, Bohenek’s Mandrake Pilla. We know of no remedy so bermlem and deoi- sive in its notion. It at onoe atrikee at tha root of the disease end prodneee healthy tone to the system. People nev er need suffer from any disease arising from a disordered oondition of the liver, if they wonld take this exosllent modi cine when they feel the first indications of the malady.
