MEAT Will BECOME OP TEEMf
Farmers nowva-days appear to be bar-
lesquing their calling. There ia soarealy
a day, bat that we see four or five empty
wagons, even at this early data, coming
into the city for com, bacon, Ac. This
ia a deplorable state of affairs, and the
farmers see the error of their ways bn t
will not change theca. We learn by in
quiries from various point* in this section
that a fabulous aasount of ootton is being
planted. This ia undoubtedly self-de-
struotioo, for provisions and agricultural
products generally are bound
to be higher henoeforth, for a
time which we would not
attempt to limit, aa there will be a de
mand for them elsewhere than in
this eountry, and they are sure to go
where the demand is the stronger. Thus
a very abnormal state of things, we might
my, will exist and will result greatly to
tbs detriment of the farmers in this ooun-
try. It is strange, when they know their
best interests, that they will not work for
them. They, that is the majority of thorn,
will be slaves their life time to the mer
chants, and can never get their necks
from 'neath the oppreseive yoke as long
as they continue in their folly.
Ck**ri*0 Report.
Dr. T. K. Barnum, of Stewart county,
was in the city yesterday. He reports
the farmer* in his section in a condition,
with good seasons, to beoome self-sus
taining. Their oats and wheat are flour
ishing, and oorn, of which an ample sup
ply is planted for the needs of the people
and more too. This is cheering.

MIT EE NEWS.
The Julia, whose shaft was broken be
low Eufaula Wednesday, will arrive here
to-day. The shaft was repaired and the
steamer came twelve miles above Eufaula
Thursday night and there stopped, as it
was not thought safe to venture further
until a new shaft could be put in plaoe of
the old one. Captain Walter Fry, Engi
neer Isaao Lowe and Pilot Bose Marorum,
of this boat, with Messrs. Dan Fry and
F. Wise, Government steamboat inspeo-
tom, and H. McKinney and 8. H. Dicker-
son, arrived in the oily yesterday from
tbia steamer.
The steamer Big Foot left the wharf
yesterday about noon to meet the Julia
and assist her to this point.
Messrs. Dan Fry and P. Wise, Govern
ment steamboat inspectors, who arrived
here yesterday, will inspeot the Wylly,
whioh will run in plaoe of the Julia,
whioh will leave aa soon as repaired, per
haps about next Wednesday, with the
Snapper Club on a two weeks' fishing
trip to the bay and other places.
tee public school picnic.
It took place yesterday in Reich's Gar
den and continued from 9 a. m. until
dark, under the supervision of Mr. John
King. Daring the greater portion of the
day none scarcely attended, exoept the
Public School children, but late in the
afternoon many ladies and gentlemen
presented themselves. The occasion was
one of sinoera and unalloyed pleasure, for
nothing but childish sooth prevailed,
which was indeed refreshing, as even in
life's eternity, it would lend boars of
cheering. It was highly interesting to
witness* the innocent simplicity and
sprightly mischief of the children as they
moved so playfully in the danoe. A look
of dignity, though we do them injustice
when we thus speak, was simply a charm
in them and oniy served to add more to
their lightness and purity of heart. While
some clasped hands to “swing,” others
would grab arms and tarn, and, still,
others would refuse to touch each other,
in going tha festive rounds. The musio
was rendered by the Italian and oolored
string bands, and, with the exception
of stopping for refreshments about
noon or “dinner time,” there was not a
surooase in the danoe. Delirious ice
oream and lemonade were furnished in
abundant coolness. There was never a
more enjoyable and better conducted af
fair than this and many glad and light
hearts went home in joy to remember the
ocoasion as one of the sweetest in the
diary of childhood's recollection*. If all
of life oould be as unselfish and guileless
as this—as rich with true happiness—
ephemeral mortals could not wish for
more. If the limpid stream of pleasure
oould flow on forever in its orystal rip
ples, as on yesterday, and never be pol
luted by the tributary and muddy impu
rities of existence, in what a sea of glory
would the voyage of our being in this
world be ended. But, “it ia not all of
life to live, nor all of death to die," so
the pbilosopizing upon and longing after
such delights need not be prolonged, as it
might appear vain, or it would be vain, to
even dream of a life of perfect bliss on
this coil.

The following whioh we extrsot from
the Washington Sunday Herald describes
a medal which is to be presented to Major
Jones, of Montgomery. It U a well mer
ited oompliment to a deserving gentle
man and it gives us muoh pleasure to
reoord an sot whioh reflects so muoh
credit on both those “who give rad him
who receive, a”
A number of Federal soldiers, during tbe
late war have determined, wa understand,
to present Major Thomas G. Jones, of
Alabama, a medal. It will be remembered
that Major Jones delivered a memorial
address at Montgomery, Ala., in 1874,
which attracted mnch attention at the
time. Subsequently be visited Washing
ton, where he was the recipient of a din
ner gotten np by Federal soldiers, on
whioh oooasion he made a speech, in
which he tonohingly referred, among other
things, to an old Virginian who had a son
killed in eaoh army, and after the war
buried them aide by side in the old family
ground. On the monument he plaoea
the name of eaoh, with the words, “God
knows who waa right.”
It is the intention of those who have
tbe matter in charge to pat in the oentre
on one side of the medal a quotation
from the memorial address, as follows:
“The law whioh nerved these men to di*
wa* graven on th«fr inmost souls by the
Auger of the Almighty.” Ou the outer
rim there will be a quotation from the
dinner epeeoh, sa follows: “We era be
queath oar children nobler legsoies than
discords and hates.” In the centre, be
low the middle, it ia intended to pnt these
words: “Honor to noble foes is the war
rior’s highest oou.jge.” On the reverse
aide there is to be a flgnre of Peace, and
this inscription; “Over plighted faith,
sealed by a warrior's grave, Troth, Mercy
and Charity alone should honor ;” and
below the following: “God knows who
was right.” On the outer rim ia to be
this inscription: “From Union soldiers to
Major Thomas G. Jones, late C. S. A.,
for manlv worda spoke on Memorial day,
April, 1874, at Montgomery, Ala.”
