the charterers of the train. The conduc

on whioh she was to return was not aware
that snob an agreement had been made
by tho company’s agent, as it acorns, and
telegraphed to the superintendent to know
if ho should allow the return ticket to be

VENT ROOST.
Tho children of Israol oommenaed the
celebration of the festival of Pentecost
Thursday evening and continued it yes
terday.
It is a day of great rejoicing, and stands
out in bold rellof in their religious calen
dar as a time for joy and thanksgiving,
It is oommemorated not in a sectai ian
sonso, not for the origin of a race or tho
overthrow of their enemies, but beoanse
through tho meroy and goodness of God
their ancestors wore not only rodeemed
froui Egyptian bondage, but were distin
guiahod from all other nations by having
boon mndo acquainted with the Divine
Law and appointed its custodian. Their
bodies bad been freed from the lash of
their oruol task-masters, but
their spirits wore not yet dis
enthralled; their flesh was free
but the soul was fettered with
the most abjeot slavory. Fifty days from
their Exodous the Decalogue was pro-
mitigated, and the tiro of its glory blazed
from Sinai in tho prosenoe of two millions
of people, and the entire civilized world
this day acknowledge its grand moral lea,
sons. In honor of the great event tho
syuagoguo is adorned with the choicest
floral tributes, and the nimble fingers of
the daughters of Israol have been engaged
in tho past twenty-four hours in arranging
wreaths and chaplets for its ornumenta
tiou.
Tho reading of the Rook of ltuth is
part of the ritual service of the day, in
order to impress tho minds of the congre
gation with obedieuoe to God’s com
mandments, whioh in so peculiar and em
inent a dogroe indioate prooepts of chari
ty, kindness and brothorly lovo to all
their follow-oroaturea.
Billon by a Spider.
Dr. J. L. Ghoney is in quite a oritioal
condition on aooount of having boon bit
ten several days ago on the thumb by a
spider. The poison has diffused itself
throughout his system aud he is now suf
faring with inflammatory rheumatism and
is paralyzed in bis legs.
OPELIKA ITEMS.
We were shown a letter from Mr. J. A.
Pace, of Dallas, Texas, formerly a mer
chant of this city, and who moved to
Texas February last. He is not at all
pleased with bis new home, advises all Ills
friends who contemplate moving West to
dispel such ideas at onoe and remain
where they are, and odds, if be had gone
out to look at the country before moving,
be would never have done so. It is his
intention, however, to try it one year,
and if he is not a great deal better pleased
than be now is, will return to Opelika.
Our efficient postmaster, P. Watt La
nio, Esq , is now absent, probably in the
interest of his offioe, as it is not likely
that a Demoorat will be appointed here,
we hope he may be retained in his present
position. He is aooommodating to the
people, courteous alike to all, and un
doubtedly the choioe of this community-
The principal thoroughfare of the oity
is being greatly improved in spots by ar
tificial stone pavements, now in oourse of
construction, under the supervision of
Capt. W. G. McKenzie, who has State
right for the manufacture of this hand
some stone. PedestrisnB and parties
interested in the beautifying of the place
express muoh regret that the entire busi
ness portion of the town is not to be sim
ilarly paved.
There will be a grand excursion to-day
(Saturday) on the Savannah and Memphis
Railroad. People all along the line from
Alexander Oity will have an opportunity
to visit Opelika. The cars on such occa
sions, which happens two or three times a
year as a general thing, are densly paoked,
their objeot being principally to trade.

HARRIS COUNTY DOTS.

middlings, two hamB and a shoulder of
meat. No clue. Lives near Oataula.

Dr. Mitchell sent us a large Irish potato
that resembled “Boss” Tweed ; and, like
the “Boss,” we soon got it in a stew.

Copied and condensed from the Jour■
nal whioh every man in Harris oounty
should take for it is bright and newsy.
A lady sent us a note yesterday request
ing an appeal for help in behalf of a suf
fering, wounded Confederate soldier and
family, who are in sore need of the gen
erosity of our people—muoh more so
than the enlightened nations of China and
Japan need missionaries. Charity of the
true character begins at home. 8ending
abroad belongs to opulenoe. We simp
ly append a portion of the note, as repre
senting the oase more properly than we
can, but by request suppress her name.
We gill give it to any one who desires to
furnish aid to the afflieted family:
I take the liberty of asking you in the
name, and for the sake of humanity to
publish either this communication or an
artiole of your own, in regard to the sub
ject. There is in onr oity, • case of suf
fering that exceeds any that I have ever
seen. The sufferer is a Confederate sol
dier who contracted terrible rheumatism
in the late war. He is entirely disabled,
and one of the greatest sufferers you ean
imagine, chained by his disease to a ohair,
and unable to walk one step, he is a pic
ture of patient fortitude, and would move
to pity any heart not of atone. He has a
wife and two little ones, one a baby four
days old. The wife is utterly unable to
wait on herself, or her ohildren and hus
band. The husband is unable to do
aught for his helpless ones. A great deal
of kindness has been shown this family,
but they still need many oomforts. Any
who are charitable, and will aid this fam
ily will bestow true charity, by sending
them at once cooked food, as there is no
one to cook for them—not. a soul on the
lot but tbomselvos, and all they have to
sustain them, is what may be oarried in
by those who know of their wants. They
need too, badly, clothing, beding, and
the man needs sadly a ohair with rollers
so that he can move himself over the
room. His name is Joe Hmith, and he
lives on the squa<e below the synagogue,
just back of Mr. Bradford’s. I will will
ingly take anything to them which may
be sent, not being able myself to give
them anything, but my personal servioes.
I felt impelled to ask aid for them from
the charitable, and kind hearted of our
city, believing that suoh an appeal has
never been made in vaio, in this plaoe.

Mr. J. R. Christian, Deputy Graud

This is a charitable organization and it
will profit anyone to join it. Mr. Chris
