were drowned In the Chattahoochee, in
Troup oounty, last Saturday while fishing.
—The new building for the high sohool
LaGrange, will cost $3,865, and will be
ready for use by the first of next Septem
ber.
—It is said that there are forty lawyers
in Atlanta between the ages of twenty and
thirty. The remaining eighty are over
thirty.
—A boy bitten by a rattlesnake near
Augusta was ourea by drinking a half
pint of whiskey and bathing his foot in
ammonia.
—Hon. J. F. Walker, of Colquitt coun
ty, has been nominated for the State Ben.

—An escaped oonviotfrom the Alabama
penitentiary was captured in LaGrange,
last week, and a guard took him baok to
durance vile.
—An individual in Henry oounty, who
baa been in the habit of insulting ladies,
has been given one hundred and fifty

—The LaGrange Light Guards had a
pionio Wednesday. The West Point
Guards were their guests. The day olosed
with a hop at the hems House.
—The delegates nominated for the Con.
stitutional Convention are, Jones—E. 0.
Grier and A. S. Hamilton; Wilkinson—F.
Chambers and E. J. Coates; Twiees—P.
W. Edge.
—Messrs. A. B. Wright, John W. Un
derwood and D. B. Hamilton have been
nominated for the Convention in Floyd
oounty, and Samuel W. Hawkins in Chat
tooga oounty.
—The Journal says that over two hun
drml dollars worth of oows have boon
killed on the railroad near Thompson

—Mr. 0. E. Boynton, of Atlanta, kns
endowed Emory Colloge with a medal
fund. The medal to be presented for the
best essay eack'year at the oollege com

—Mrs. Anna Bmitb, who lives in Babnn
oounty, has just ended her one hundred
and fourth birthday. She iH the mother
of sixteen ahildren, all but three of whom
are now living.
—The Chatham Artillery, who fought
under Gen. Colquitt at Olustee, greeted
the Governor on his arrival in Savannah,
Wednesday morning, with a salute of sev
enteen guns.
—Anthony L. Goble, for killing W. L.
Brown in March last, waB tried at Gilmer
Superior Court last week, found guilty,
and sentenced to be hung at Ellijay on
the 22d of June.
—At a meeting at McDonald, Col. Jas.
L. Seward and Hon. Aug. H. Hansell, of
Thomas; Bryant Oreeob, of Brooks, and
Henry Gay, of Colquitt, were nominated
for the Convention.
—The Griffin News reports the burning
of the store house of Kelly A Bishop, at
Brooks’ Btation, on the Griffin and Now-
nan Railroad, with a loss of $3,000 and
an insurance of $2,000.
—Bibb oounty proposes to select her
candidates for the Convention by prima
ry eleotion. Ex-Senator Tom Simmons,
Major William H. Boss and Colonel John
Cummings are the prominent candidates.
—Farther nominations for the Conven
tion : In Dooly oounty, O. P. Swearen-
gen. In Maoon oounty, Messrs. A. H.
Greer and J. 0. Ellington. In Upson
county, Dr. Flewellen and Bev. John
Dickey.
—General George W. Evans, born
Augusta in 1801, and afterwards Mayor of
the oity and a member of the Legislature
from Burke, and general in the militia,
died at his residence in Columbia oonnty
on Thursday,
—Tho Glade mine, in Hall county, has
been purchased by Mr. Jennings, of New
York. Mr. Kirby bought this property
two years ago at $6,000, and has taken
ont enough gold already to pay the pur
chase money.
—There is some talk of Meriwether and
Pike counties building a bridge aoross
Flint River at Flat Shoals, bat, we un
derstand, Pike county authorities are will
ing to assume only one-fourth of the cost
of construotion.
—The body of the woman found last
week hanging to some bruBh in Flint
river, near Griffin, proved on the inquest
to be that of Moll Allen, a colored woman
who, in a fit of insanity, evidently was
drowned while attempting to wade the
river.
—Charlie Seagraves, a young man, 23
or 24 years old, and son of Mr. Benjamin
Heagraves, a respectable farmer of Bpald-
ing county, was found on Wednesday
hanging by a traoe chain from the limb
of a tree not far from his father's house.
He left his land to bis mother. Thought
to have been insane,
—Messrs. John J. Hunt, Wm. R. Han
leiter, Nathan 0. Munroe, F. A. Free
man, Henry T. Patterson and S. D. Wil
liamson, who are opponents of tho
Convention, have issued a oircnlar to the
voters of the counties of Hpalding, Fay
ette and Butts. The whole is a quibble
about the homestead.
—According to the Eatonton Mettenger.
Mr. Aleck Denham, who lives on a plans
tation of Mr. J. H. Allen, shot end seri
ously wouuded Mr. Ciciar Bledsoe on
Saturday evening last. It was a case of
self-defense, as the negro was about to
attack Mr. Denham, when the latter
checked the movement by a pistol shot
—For two weeks in Fulton oonnty So
perior Court eighteen persons have been
found guilty, thirteen of felonies with
ssntenoes aggrogating ninety-four years
—From LaGrange Reporter: On the
secoud day of Juno next I will give a

—Major Rochester, who is stationed in
Atlanta, has been seleoted by the War
Department as the paymaster to endorse
the vonohers of army offloers in North
and South Carolina, Georgia, Florida,
Kentucky and Tennessee. Suob endorse
ments are to be made under the plan pro
posed by Dtexel, Morgan A Co. for ad
vancing mcney at a low rate of interest
for servioeH rendered after June 30th.
—Sheriff Sibley, of Biohmond oonnty,
informs the Governor, by letter, that the
recent order issued upon the instance of
Solicitor General Dutcher for the arrest
of the parties obarged with lynohing the
negro murderer at Waynesboro was un
called for, as there won 111 be and was an
ticipated no trouble in' makibg arrests
whenever the proper papers were plaoed
in the hands of the Sheriff.
—At a picnio for the oolored people,
several oolored mon made speeohes. Mi
nor Lewis, a preaoher, said a better Un
derstanding exists between the whites and
blacks in Meriwother than hsd been
known sinco the war, and that all the
troubles heretofore has been a foolish
distrust of the whites by the blacks. Mr.
J. S. Grant was so well pleased with the
turn of affairs that he gave thorn a beau
tiful site on his farm for a sohool house.
ALABAMA HEWS.
The Supreme Court met Thursday in
Montgomery, and after delivering sev
eral opinions, adjourned until Saturday
next.
—Married, at tho residence of the
bride’s father, Mr. J. G. Harris, May 23,
by Rev. Mr. Mason, Mr. J. P. McQueen,
of Lowndes county, to Miss M. Lula Har
ris, of Montgomery oounty.
There have been 523 interments in
tha Montgomery Oity Cemetery for tho
past sixteen montliB, ending April 30th,
1877. Deducting 118 non-resident de-
oedents brought here for burial, and 38
still-born children, wo have a total aotual
death reoord of 367. Of this number
there were 61 males, white, and 56 fe
males, white, total 117; or at the rate of
11 per 1000 of deathB to tho white popu
lation; oolored males 121, colored females
129, total 250; or at the rate of £6.7 per
1000 of the oolored population. Percent
age of deaths to whole population 18.3.
