It is proverbial with dead tftata and means, when he has followed a gentleman into*a bar room, “I'll take a drink, thank you”—when be hu been invited under protest by a man surcharged with Amerioan politeness. A gentleman was tolling to us his grievances yesterday in this respect. He went into the f-aloon and oallod for a drink and after him followed three men. This embar rassed him of oonrse, and “With oounte- nanoe demure and modest graoe," he Bald Won't you taka something?" “That's CMUECMKS SUNDAY. The weather being very iuolement tbe attendaooe at the various ohurohes was ■mall. Below we give tbe oepioity of each oburoh and morning attendance: St. Paul— There were 49 in tbe congre gation. The ehurob will accom modate 350. Baptiet—The number in attendance was 85, eapscity 950. The usual large number of boys on the steps, ws are glad to say, wss very small. Tbe congregation was about squally divided between the sexes. KpUeopal.—There we 05 present. The oburoh can aooommodate GOO people. The aexei were nearly equally represent ed. Presbyterian.—Eighty-five in attend- enoe, of whloh 45 were female and 40 male. Gapaeity of ohnroh 850. St. Luke.—There were 54 males and 23 famalaa at this ehurob, making a total of 77. The oburoh will comfortably seat 800. Sunday before last tbe pastor of this ehurob aeked the friends of boys who leave ohnroh during servioes to talk to them about it, and tell them the wrong. Though tbe number that praotioe this rudeneaa have decreased, there are some who have no friends to talk to them. Bays, we are your friends, and tell you that it is not only disrespectful to the minister, bnt you disturb those who wish to hear tha sermon, and oast a reflection on your rearing. If the sermon does not interest you, show the minister tbe respect due him by sitting quietly until services are over, and next Sunday read the Bun- dat Enquibeb and seleet a oburoh where you think you will be entertained. Catholic Church.—The congregation numbered about 100. The ohurch will aooommodate 300. The above report shows that we hove oburoh room for about 4,300 people, while on Sunday before loot, as fair a day as any could with for, there were 1,485 of these oooupied, and on Snndsy last only 536 had poonpanta. My letter from Louie villa, if I remem bor right, stated we would leave that day at 4 p.m., end in thie we warn agreeably disappointed, end tbe time given that night was next dey. So after breakfast we paid onr bill* et hotels and bad our baggage moved to boat, and Atarohed down ourselves to find out movements, ete. We fonnd that time had been changed to 3j p. m. ; so all hands thought we would stroll around the oity to eee if they oould see anything that they had not lean be fore. Onr party took e stroll through Main street, end after looking through a carriage repository for the benefit of our Neal's Landing friend, we paid Messrs. Smyser A Milton’s large! oonoern a viait. Here I fonnd a Mr. Pittman, who waa onoe connected with the firm of Sawyer, Wallaoe A Co., a large ootton house in New York, end had paid onr oity a viait. Mr. Milton requested Mr. F. to show us through the wine oellar, to whieh of oouree we soon gave our ooosent, and Mr. P. led tbe way, and down the steps we soon found onrselves. Turned the ga* on, and such a sight in theway of wine I have never seen, nor never expeot to be hold again. I suppose they had at least twenty pipes, hogsheads, or casks, (I do not know what they are oalled), bolding 1,600 gallons eaob, and I learn the amount of wine then on hand amounted to 950,- X00. This wine is msnnfsotnred by Mr. Smyser, at his farm near Louisville. We sampled it, of oouree, end'found the claret good, and the white wine the best our parly ever tasted. This firm also manufactures the oelebrated brands of floor, kDown in our city as “Silver Lake,” “Gold Dust," “Ohio Falls,” “Mammoth Cave,” and others. They also deal very largely in bagging, having a very large Btook on hand at this time. After leaving there we made one or two more calls, and then went to boat for dinner. We then took our seat and waited for the time to leave. At 3:30 the captain gave bis orders to turn loose. We had quite a number of friends to see as depart—amongst tbe lot three Columbus boys, Wm. Palmer, Mo- Ginnis, end Henry Klink. When the ropes were untied we steamed up the river about half a mile. I do not know if this was done to show onr beautiful little oraft off, or to get a good turning place. The tatter I hardly think proba ble, as she handles very well. Ones around, we headed our boat for the oanei, whieh is three end a half miles long. After passing several swinging bridges we,after an hour running,as we went very slow through, found ourselves at the end with three locks to pass through. Afterwards, under full headway again, we went along smoothly and landed at Evansville at 7 p. m. last night. Here we put out some freight and took a little on. We fonnd onr friend, Diok Rneker, whom we were all prond to see. He was enjoying good health and fnlly aa fat as your correspondent. He famished as with a few Columbne papers, whieh we all enjoyed and were glad to see, as we want to hear all we oan from home, aa our chances are slim to hear anything be fore we get to New Orleans, when we ex pect to hear from families and friends. We left EvanBville at 10$ p. m. and on we went. We are about fifty miles from Cairo, wbioh we expeot to reaoh by 12 m., and where I will mail this letter. Northern people may write as they please about reee oonfliots but they oan- not destroy the tie, or affeotion whioh holds the majority of the ooiored race to former owners. Faot ia worth more than assertion. Last afternoon a ooiored man handed ns thie, and asked ns to publish it a tribute of himaelf and others to his deed master. To our question, he replied ho had composed and written tbe ertiole himself. We submit it without a change of letter : Mr. Editor Enquirer-Bun—Please al low ns apaoe in yonr columns to present an honor to Mr. G. DeLaunay onr old former master, the trae Beeret of onr last reaped for a deceased friend. We have known him from onr earliest reooollection; we were owned and raised by him. We believe that he thought something of na, for he have shown it in words and in deeds. While it waa reported as rumor over the oonntry that the old former mas ters aud old slaves were * animosity with each other. We oan speak for the deceas ed the friendship exist between him and We oan not witness more of this on tbe part of him. After tha civil war be tween the two aeotione of the oonntry we were freed. We were somewhat ignorant to the trae existent of free habjte. Onr former master knowing our raising and principle he sympathised with ua in many things as in an inatraotor, that we might learn to promote onrselves. For, and in consideration of these examples and oonnaels whioh we have fonnd in him to promote and edify onr oause, he have en deared ua to him aa a friend with pro found effect. The last honor we should have presented for the deoeased friend to honor him to his grave. Bat for a certain death tbia waa not done whioh ia a grief we are considering. The tidings of the deoeased to us aud all our of associate wan struak with great sorrow. He is deed, bnt he still lives in remembrance and respects tha last oan be done for deoeased friend.
