Bshstob McDomald remarked in Wash ington Bonds;: “Oar country can never stand another snoh a wrench as it baa had in this past election. The fatnona table rook at Niagara Falls, or all that is left of it—some 60,000 tons —fell the other day. Among the 4,000 names soratohe^upon it,there were many from Georgia. Thr salary of Henry Ward Beecher, as editor of the Chrietian Union, has been rednoed, at his own request, from 910,000 which it has been from the origin of the paper to half that amount. m» >,» - Am Oshkoah woman gave birth to trip lets, and next morning her husband took a package to the drug store and said: "Oise me somo old fashioned window- pane—not any more bluo glass in my family.'' At the next Mississippi eleotion two amendments are to be Toted for—one to abolish the office of Lieutenant GoTernor, and the other to hare the Legislature to meet onoe every two years instead of BTory year. A Cnirmsi) soldier waa bung last Fri day at Dayton Ohio, and two negroes and one white man were excouted in the parish prison in New Orleans. Governor Nioholls signed the death warrants of three others. TEsns is a reign of terror in the vioin- ity of Uardstown, Ky., orer the escapo from jail of four men charged with mur der. Hinoe their eaoapo these four men hare been hiding in the knobs in oertain portions of Marion and Taylor oounties, and a number of robberies hare been committed in adjoining oounties, whioh have generally been attributed to them. As the oolored yontb, Flipper, stepped forward at Went Point and reoeived his diploma with a dignified bow, Uenetal Bberman dapped his hands approTiugly, and bis example was at onoe followed by nearly all the Tisitors and offloera present, until there was an almost uniTersal round of applauso. Flipper, it is needless to my, was not seon to blush, but he ac knowledged the oompliment by modestly inclining his hoad. He was the only oad«t applauded. Twsits States will hold eleotions dur ing the proaent year, to-wit: Kentucky, August 6; Vermont, September 4 ; Cali fornia, Beptember f>; Maine, September 10; Iowa and Ohio, Ootober 9, and Mas aaobuaelte, Mississippi, New York, Penn- sylTia, Virginia and Wisconsin, NoTem- ber 6. In four of those States Legisla tures are to be ohosen, whioh will furnish successors to a like number of United States Senators whoae terms expire on March 4,1879, viz: Kentucky, New York, Ohio aud California, in all of whioh it is probable the Democrats will be ^access ful. _ The New York llerald editorially refer ring to Samul J. Tilden's speech at the Manhattan Club reoeption, ridicules the altitude assumed by him in complaining of alleged wrongs done him and regret fully concludes that bis ohanoea fa* the Presidency in 1880, whioh had been ex' oeediugly good, hare Taninhed, and Til deu has not only killed himself politically by his whining exhibitions, but he has also been the death of the Democratic party. Very forhmately the Herald is very poor authority on Democracy. It is a strange indication of a dead party that oonlrols a majority of the State Govern ments, has the House and rearly the Sen ate. We like to belong to snoh dead or ganizations. Thr reoent demonstration at New York in honor of Messrs. Tilden and Hendricks is giving a good deal of trouble to the Republicans in some quarters. It has been erroneously construed as proof of a plan to anticipate the Democratic nomi nations for 1880, and to nominate Tiklan for President and Hendricks for Vice President. There is reliable authority for staling that the speoial friends of Mr. Hendricks do not regard the demonstra- ( tion in this light, and they entirely dis connect it with the Presidential soooes- aion. Their expectation is, at tho proper time, to press the nomination of Mr. Hendricks (or tho Presidency, and they are very sanguine that a Western man will be nominated. Mb. MOSES’ WAR RECORD, He ohose to wring this paper in in a re ply to obargee made by Mr. Peabody against him and spoaks of war records. We propose to givo his, end all know no bnliat of the enemy ever whistled by hi* secession ear. Major Moses waa a bla tant eeeeeeioniet. He traversed the oonn- try, firing the hearts of the people. He wanted blood—Yankee blood. Yanooy end Toombs never exooeded him in stir ring np war. War came, and Major Moaea waa ono of the first to bnokle on his armor and go—not to the front—wboro his silver-tongued oratory led ue to be lieve be would. Oh, not This gallant fighter went to the rear to take charge of a wagon train, and tbero ho remained un til the straggle was over. Thou ho comae to the front again and ondoavora to belittle a man for not dofonding bis country. Now this is whst we would oall “the kettle calling tho pot black." Now this man who did more than any other in Moaoogeo oonnty towards bringing on the war, whan the straggle came did as little fighting as a Bister of Mercy, and who on the first alarm no doubt hnstoued to tho rear to get his wagons in a safo plooe. For him to berate anybody for not fighting is truly very funny. Gallant Knight of tbe Bread Tray,wo sorrow for yon,we do. Whst a pity those many friends to whom you so gushingly read your article to, be fore you sent it to tbe printer, did not ad vise tbe omission of tbe wsr pert. RINGS. “Bing, a noun, a oirole; King, a noun,a sound as from a ball.” Dictionary, We are a Bing,or thelesd of a King, ifa oirole or eonnd has a bond, or at least so we are charged. Wo have borne the honor nnoomplainingly for years, and we might aay without blushing, ovorybod; is proud of being somobody, and wo are prond of being a King, or tbe heed of alting. Wo greatly prefer being a King, or the head of a Bing, than to bo tho tail of a jack-ass or evon to be tbe jack-oas himself. Now we have no letters patent for onr lting, we don’t know that it is evon noocssary for ns to bo so providod, but wo have oil the glory and honor, whioh is no little, seeing how people are nearly fright ened out of their wits by tho mere mention of our Bing. Oar lting must he a torri - ble thing to bo snob a torror to the poo- ple. Now we mast oonfoss ignorance of onr Bing, but it has been charged and bulldozed npon ns so long and so ofton that wo almost holiovo ourselves to be a lting, and a terrible lting at that. Now we havo never fully understood or ■ lting bns ness, and wo ask of those who so muoh fear us, yet who havo so kindly given us our honor, to onllghton mi ss to whom nnd whst wo sro. Whst neve we done to doeorvo tho honor, and what are wo going to do to oontinuo tho honor't Havo wo Mooted oi’.solvoa to any oifioo of honor or profit, or aro we going to do so? Onr eeriest recollection of our lting dates book to tbe time wbon wo wore bet. tling aide by side with our - boat pooplo to prevent the saddling npon tho oity the present immense dobt. Our ltiug was powerful, but not powerful onough to prevent tbe wild sohomee then proposed Our Bing, then as now, fought to placo the best mep in ofiloo, and to secure to the oity an economical govoruiuont. Our lting sometimes failed, and upon every failure, the people, tho tsx-payors suffer ed. Our Bing still exists, is still power ful for good, and wo hope it will continue to survive. Our lting never was accused of robbing the people, or oppressing them with taxation. The only crime over charged ii being a lting. Our aoonsers generally look wise, turn np their noses anil ominonsly shako their heads ss muoh as to say, “Terriblo thing—that ltiug.” There is one peculiarity about those who most frequently ohargo us with boing a ltiug. Their Into inwardness is a per sonal dislike to ourselves, and thoir iu» bilily to oharge ns with anything else, call us a lting. They are also gonorolly of that class who have squandered their patrimony, and are too worthless to go to work like men and bnild themselves np, and are mad with every one who earns an honest livelihood. Especially do they hate one who has, by honesty, iudustry and eoonoiny, gained enough to pay debts and bsve sufficient to eat and wear. We pity theee lting ohargers, and in all kind advise them to go to work and earn an honest living. Bnpport yonr wives and children, instead of letting thorn sop port yon. Don't fret and or; because we won't give yon our bard earnings. Go to work. Yon will foci better and be hair- pier, and will not have onr ltiug aa nightmare. OU, MT t DR MONKS. Dr. F. O. Tieknor waa a poet of great merit, and besides had a remarkable fund of hnmor. Many of bis pieces bo sent to Col. A. B. Lamar, when that gentleman was editor of the Sun. One of the arti cles was a funny lament, tbe ohorus of whioh waa “Ob, my! da Moses!" Twas thus we thought when Sunday wo read tho really funny card of Mr. Mooes. It was rosily jolly to know that an eldorly gentleman, who had fonght gallantly du ring tho late war. that ho advocated so in tensely, as a commissary, could lose his temper. IIa did though. He was very angry and said petulant things, lie even called the EMoctasn-Bcii “a heavy weight." That won intended aa sarcasm spelled with a “k." Mr. Moses wished to be s oandidsle for Congress directly after tho war. bnt Colonel A. R. Lamar, oditing another “heavy weight," succeeded in defeating him in the nomi nation with Colonel, now Judge, Hugh Bnobanan. Mr. Moaos has hsd no use for “hesvy weights” sinoe. Mr. M. knows whst it is to bo beeton. A Washington speoial to tbe Baltimore Sun soys: The speeohos of Governors Tilden sod Hendricks at tho Manhattan Olnb last night have, of onurse, boen the theme of oonBiderablo dismission here to-day. At tho White nonso the speeches were po- ruBed with oare snd deliberation, and it must bo said that they do not appoar to have disturbed the equanimity of any one in that establishment. The President expresses himself ss thoronghly satisfied of his title de jure. He not only thinks ba wss rightfully entitled to the votes of Florida and Louisiana, but bo said he thought a fair eleotion in Mississippi would have given him the vote of that Btate also. Under the cirenmstanoes it is, of eonrso, a groat consolation to him to entertain snoh on opinion. The speech of Governor Tilden is regarded hero as indicating unmistakably his pnrposo to oontost the title and the tenure of Presi dent Hayes if tbe period should ever ar rive when snoh contest can be oonduoted bn the broad ground of the merits of the oaso, and decided outside of any partisan or personal influenoe. It is doubtful whether such period will ever oome, and, as Governor Tilden will not inaugurate a oontost merely for the sake of agitation, President Hayes is no doubt justified in tho oomfortable oonviction that, barring the fate of all mortality, he will serve ont his four years’ term. The express peoplo on; the package was deliv ered to the bank here just as it was re ceived by their agents at Mount Vernon, the seajs being intact on the wrapper, and that tho seals of tbe paokago were the same or need by the bonk. There is great mystery in the eoMt whioh is being inveetigated by both banka and tbe ox- press offloials. we *w The reason wby tbe name of “ayndi cate" is givon to the association of bank ers engaged in selling the new United States loon is, that on the continent of Europe the direotors of the old trading companies were oalled syndics. In Franoe, to this day, the creditors of a bankrupt are allowed to appoint a syndic to take possession of hia property and wind up bis business. The term has been late ly applied in England to the managing members of a speoial combination of merchants or bonkers, and has traveled thenoo to this oountry.
