The alarm of fir* was sounded this
morning sllj o’olock from a bell in the

not only roused Broad street but sounded
tbe fire alarm, and helped carry two en
gines to the scene of conflagration. It

The fir* destroyed all tbe framed struc
tures on tbe west aide of Oglethorpe
street from Hamilton's ooraer to John
Ryan’s soda factory. Tha bouses were

Two others were tbe property of Mr.
MeCook, in one of wbioh be resided and

Tbe fourth was owned by Brawner, of
Harris county, and occupied as a store by
Upton. In this store the fire originated,

full blaze before discovered.

meets, we are told, some faetory opera
tives lost their all. In fact hardly any

Tbe Washington Capital thus speaks
of a correspondent’s letter thus:
“He then quotes “The Virginians of
tbe Valley," one of the most exquisite
poems in any language. It was written
by Dr. F. O. Tioknor, of Columbus, Ga.,
who also wrote “Little Giffen, of Ten
nessee.” Had Dr. Tioknor been a North
ern man, and written for Northern maga
zines, be would have been rung and sung
into mortality. As it is, be died obaenre-

A Murderer Ceptured.
On Wednesday, Deteotives Roberts and
Palmar oaptured Alex. Slaughter, ooloerd,
who was oonvioted end sentenced to five
years in the penitentiary, for murder.
About three years ago this soouudrel, as
sisted by two others of the same stamp, tied
negro man end whipped him to death
with a buggy traoa. One of bia accom
plices was oaptured, and is serving out a
five years’ term—the other is still at large.
He baa made bis esospe three times
from Barbour oounty, Ala., jail, and was
oaptured onoe before by this firm.
Messrs. R. and P. ran tha “gentleman”
about two miles on Sunday morning, but
be distsnoed them in a abort while and
was lost to view. On Wednesday they
heard of his whereabouts and started in
pursuit. On arriving they inquired of a
woman if he waa in tha bouse, and she
answered In tbe negative. The bouse
waa searohed, bowevoj, and tbe “lost wee
found.” They were assisted by two other
gentlemen, and after a great deal of scuf
fling he was secured and marobed to tbe
city. He is repnyented to be a very vi-
oiona soouodrel and a hard “ ’an” to han-
die.
