OUR KHOOL ■ VETER. I* It In Danger frnna the CwnvenllonT WHAT STATE SCHOOL OOMMSSIOHER ORR nAS TO SAT— INTERESTING TACT* ABOUT THE SYSTEM. Fram tha Atlanta Constitution.! If the reports of oor exobangea and the volnminous correspondence of tbe State School Commissioner’s office aro valoahle as evidence tbe faot is undeniable that there is a decided awakening thronghout the State of interest in tbe oause of pub- lie free education. As there has been manifeated some fear that tbe Convention would in its effort to establish an eco nomical system of government, interfere with our school system, a C'omtilution reporter yesterday oalled on the State School Commissioner, Protestor Orr, and obtained his views. PROFESSOR ORR’S VIEWS were, substantially, favorable to tbe main tenance, at least, of tbe present system. He oould not yet say what would be the probable temper of tbe oonvention upon tbe question, but so far as an expression had beeu reoeived, be was satisfied that there would be a strong school feeling in that body. He bed visited fifty -three counties of tbe Btate, and met the boards of education in many of them, and delivered addresses in all. He knew that tbe mass of tbe people were favorable to tbe sobool sys tem and he believed tbe members of the convention would know this faot and feel bound to reapeot it. AN ATTEMPTED OVERTHROW of the system may be looked for. We hear many people who retain their old notions and who will attempt to have the system torn down and abolished. ‘Do yon think it will suoeeed in any degree ?" To this the Professor replied, emphati cally, that he did not. He was of the opinion that better provision would be made for the education of the people, if the Oonvention would only take oooaaion and exercise the patienoe to thorougly in vestigate the results of tbe benofioenoe of the work already aooompliBhed by the department. “Why," said he, “this whole mountain country to the north of us teems with these three months sohools and tbe peo ple there have experienced snob benefits from them to their ohihlren, that they entertain no division upon the question of keeping our sohool system intaot. The same feeling prevails in many localities elsewhere, ana I cannot believethat there either a lack of favor for tbe system or general willingness to see it in tho least interfered with, urfless it ia to extend its benefits." tion" is a recent English organisation of p. oktrd wl „ lend th „ graoo of hi „ prel , interest to those engaged in raising horses enoe to the .saembly, and has gone to for sale in the United Btatea. MEN WHO FAVOB IT. Among those whom Profeasor Orr men tioned were the Richmond county dele gates, whom he believed to have been cboaen on aooount of their educational views, aa muoh a* from any otheT reason qualification. Col. Cain, of Jefferson, was another firm advooate of the system, ooming from a county that ia doing much fer tbe oause, and that has had a special law passed to enable it to levy a tax for school purpose*. Oolooel* Simmons and Lofton, of Maoon, were also known friend* of the system of free school*. Colonel Hxmmond and hi* oolleagueH from Fnnyth, be also bad learned were favorable to the oause. Hon. Josh Hill was satisfied with the work of the nepartment, and in a public speech bad deolared that it ought not to be disturbed. Gen. Gartnill was warmly in favor of tbe system and ready to do all in his pewer to increase its efficiency. Col. Nat Hammond’s position is well known and bis opera house speech an nonnoed for him a progressive platform. Cola. Mynatt and Crane were also its strung friends and would stand by it. Indeed, the Professor wan satisfied that this great interest of the people wonld be ably championed in the Convention and wonld be successfully established under the new order of things. WHAT WE HAVE DONE. Professor Orr spoke of his letters, pub lished in the Conttitution some months ago, and embodied in bis annual report of 187(1. That report, on aooount of the discussion of the subjeot em bodied in those letters, was yet being applied for from the various Btates of the Union, from Massachusetts, the Northwest, and from South Carolina, where the subjeot ia now one of great in tereat. It had been sent for from one of the German universities, and bad attract ed tbe greatest attention to the work that the people ot Georgia were performing in this regard. EDUCATION AND APPROPRIATIONS, Congressman Felton had deolared to him that it waa upon the strength of this work, as shown in tbe sohool report of Georgia, that the appropriations for the North Georgia rivers we obtained. Mr. MoOrary, the present Secretary of War, was a member of the House and made motion that would have defeated these appropriations. In explanation of it to Dr. Felton be remarked: “Sir, it is no use. You oannot pro gress in Georgia until you stop your shackling of agriculture and establish public schools!" " Dr. Felton delioately gave the Iowan to understand that be did not know wbat he was talking abont. He handed him Prof. Orr'a report and letter*. After examin ing them, MoOrary acknowledged that Georgia waa doing aatonishing things for publio education, under the circumstances and with her limited means, and told Dr. Felton that he would withdraw his mo tion and oo-operata with him. He did ao, and the Dootor got hia appropriations passed. HOW THE PEOPLE FEEL. “Professor, suppose that the Conven tion should abolish the system or serious ly embarrass it f" if that ia a anppoaable oase, why, frankly, I believe the people would vote down any constitution that did not pro vide for the education of their children. Little as they get now, they appreciate it, and are not ready to do without it.” “Do you find tbe colored people much interested in the subject ?” ‘Very decidedly. They would be a unit in opposition to a document that abolished the schools. Oat of about 180,000 ehildren in th* eehoola last year, nearly 88,000 were the ehildren of the oolored people. They appreciate the sohools, and look upon them aa the moat substantial benefits they derive from the State." The Professor will do *11 in his power to have tha Oonvention in possession of ell possible light upon th* subject of the echo da. Mr. Tildes'* Answer to the Govern ment Burr.—A New York telegram says; The oounael for ex-Governor Tilden to day filed in th* United 8;ates District Conrt the answer to the suit of tbe Gov ernment againat Mr. Tilden to^ recover $180,000 inoome tax alleged to be due the Government. Th* answer state* that the return* made by Mr. Tilden were all cor rect, and that in the years when he neg- loctcd to make returns the Government collector made an assessment, which, with tbe penalty attached, he paid. Tbe an swer concludes with a general denial of all the allegations in the complaint, and olaima that Hr. Tildes ia indebted noth ing to the Government for income tax or on any other account. Presldeat ett the OMarentlwn. The Gwinnett Herald warmly ad vocstee the election of ex-Governor Jenkin* as President of tbe Oonatitutlonal Oonven tion. Tbe Herald a*y»: “In looking over the long list of able and experianoed men wbo will compose thin body, the popular mind naturally turn* to Chari** J. Jenkina as tbe man peculterly fitted for this position. A skilled parliamenta rian, an able judge, an experienced poli tician and one of the purest and beat men Georgia ever had, who has retired from the political arena without one blemish upon hi* fair name, may well be looked to aa the presiding officer of that Con vention. Ten years ago, aa the Governor of the State, he refused to surrender the trust with whioh the people had clothed him at tbe mandate of a military satrap, and beoame a volun tary exile from hia home sad his people to preserve tbe archive* of the State and it* Treasury. Binoa than he has held no offloe and sought none, content to pass the remainder of hia days aa a quiet citi- sen. It will be a fitting tribute to exalted worth and patriotic devotion to hi* oonn try to oall him to preside over the delib erations of a body assembler to form a constitution for the people of Georgia, when worth and intelligence are not dis franchised, and when a partisan majority in Oongreaa doe* not have to be consult ed. ” The Herald, voices the aentiment of the State on thi* snbjeot. We have little doubt that Governor Jenkina will be elected President of the Oonvention by acclamation.—Augutta Chronicle. Am Attack SR nr. Beecher. Soienoe Hall, in Clinton place, near Broadway, was filled Friday evening with a large and motley as-emblage, which gathered to hear Colonel John A. Cun ningham, of South Carolina, deliver leotnre on “ Henry Ward Bieeober and bis Reoent Speech at Bath, Long Island.” The leoture was delivered under th* au*- pice* of the Liberal Olnb, and consisted of an outpouring of vituperation and per sonal abu*e that greatly amused the scan dal-loving portion of his audienoe. Col. Cunningham was, it appears, editor of tbe Charleston Newt and Courier during th* rebellion and is a son-in-law of Governor Noble, of Georgia. He quarrelled with the words rebellion, slavery and aristoo raoy as applied to tbe Bottth. There was no rebellion, slavery waa a system of labor, and aristooraoy, taken in its Greek sense, was something to bo lauded. Mr, Beecher, be thought, Bimed vainly at being Mohammed, Tom Jefferson, Christ, Brigham Young, Confuoius, Washington, Leo X., Riobelieu, all iu one. He waa, in foot, a Yankee steeped in Hoosierism, which seemed, in the lecturer's idea, to make about the most objectionable sort of bnnian being. Then Mr. Beeoher had no proper standards of ideas. He wanted to revive war issues. That wbb his oapital sin; for bis other doings he was eontent to leave him to Plymouth Churob. At th* conclusion of tbe Colonel’s lecture a live, ly debate ensued.— N.
