Ws NUBINEBB AND THEN UAMEB. oo ''Life U a game of cfaanoe,* is no rea son, nor does not mean, that all of one's tins is to be taken np in amusements, nor doss it make any such reference. While plenty of exercise snd recreation are nec essary to a healthy system, they are to be considered secondary to the paramount ides of profitable employment. They should go hand-in-hand, however, and the former should not occupy the mind, bat serve to relax It from things daily grasped. At any game in wbiob tbsro is a science, or at one in which faeility^od aptness are to be aoqnired, person* would not like to bare it said that they devo ted so much of tbelr intellect and time as to bars mastered them thoroughly. It is not of muoh credit to be a first class billiard player, for it requires a large proportion of a life time tc acquire tbs "laws of aogela.” Yes, to play billiards, as tbey can be played, requires the work of a life. A man who desires ancoess in any oslliug or profession would not envy one who is a fine ohess-player nor will b* bare ambition to be aocounted smong the best at the game. As pleasant a game as it is, it doss not lead to results great enough in themselves to justify the time spent to be par excellence. This is something that young men, who desire to do well should bear in mind. Those who have just started out in life are generally dependent upon men who bare made a success of tbemaclres, and they fthe yonoR men) may foil asanred that these persons, whose confidence snd aid tbey expeot, wbil'jthey do not disap* prove ontright of a fine game of base ball, forlnatanoe, at wbiob they will look with pleasure, yet tbey bars an unspoken prejudice against it, *o to speak, especially when tbey see that it infringes on business. You oan't find a thorough business man who wonld select a first-class wbist or bill iard player as a clerk, or, upon finding out that one in his employ is expert at these games, would he desire to take him in eventually as one of the firm. If a man baa a vaoanoy in his lino of business, he wonld not go to the baas ball ground or billiard room to choose an expert. It not seldom baa happened that when loo free an indulgence in amusements has destroyed a young man's reputation in business, be has taken up as a profession or for a support acme one of these excit ing games, whioh bad impaired if not de stroyed his capacity and trustworthiness. Hence tbs great danger in the undue practising of these games, that of gradu ally merging from an amataur into a 'professional." It is often the case, though tba faots may not be known, that Ilia fuh iiMOimicri uf a bankrupt would not alone have brought them to want. There use been a perilous love for games of ebanoe, or of entioing skill. Of oourse all must be amused, and it is nothing bat right to have a due share of reoreation. Young men may be "clever’* at any game or sport withont detriment to their character or business qualifica tions ; bat it would be well to mark those whose very oleverness leads them to these things. The danger is that the doubtful honors of short may be substituted for a good reputation and fair salary, whioh are the compensation for honest endear* ors properly diraoted. Personal. Ool. M. H. In order to keep a natural healthful aotivity of the system we must resort to artificial means. For this pnrpose Bohenck’s Boa Weed Tonio is vary effectual. A few doses will oreata an appetite and give fresh vigor to the ener vated body. For dyspepsia it is invalua ble. Many eminent phyaioiana have doubted whether dyspepsia can be perma nently cured by the drugs whioh are gen erally employed for that purpoae. The Boa Weed Tonio in ita nature ia totally different from auch drags. It oontsins no oorroeive minerals or aoids; in faot, it aaaiats the regular operation! of nature, and auppliea her dsfioienciea. The tonio in ita nature so muoh resembles the gas tric juice that it ia almost identical with that fluid. CATHOLIC HCAXDALS. 8KBIOU8 CBABOK9 AGAINST ASOB BISHOP WOOD, or PHIDADZLPBIA, AND OTHKB OHUBOH DION IT ABIES. Philadelphia Special to Cincinnati Enquirer. Catholics in (hia oity are a good deal exoited over a circumstantial statement in the Sunday World, seriously reflecting upon the ecolesiastioal standing and per sonal character of Right Rev. Dr. Wood, Arohbishop of Philadelphia. It ia aaid that the Archbialiop who baa gonetoBome with $.36,000, a Jubilee gift from hia Arobdiooeae—haa fallen into diagram at the Vatican, not having been permitted to say Maas even in private. The World says a oiroular has bean re ceived there, of whioh e copy has been plaoed in tho hands of every individual member of the saored ooliege of Cardinals and iu the hands of all the Catholio digni taries now assembled in Rome. The document ia addressed “A sun San- tita Papa Pio IX.” It .ia dated Fidalafia. 4 Maggio, 1877. It charges that the Arohbishop la utterly unfit to govern and oontrol a dlooeae. ft begins with the oasaa of Gerdemao, Hop kins and Beaumaiater. It daeoauta upon ex-Priest Gerdeman. Next it pays its re- epeota to ex-Rev. Father Hopkins, who, it states, broke hia vow of ooutinenoe and is now married, in Stookton, Califor> nia. Next it names Rev. Father Meoono- my, who ia a Chancellor of the Cathedral, aud declares he ia a father outaide of hia legitimate spiritual fold. It represents that in order to keep Rev. Father Daniel McDermott and George O’Connor from expooing Father Meoonomy and himself they were exiled among the bills. It da- nounoes aa a confirmed drunkard one of the moat admired theologians, not only in this diocese, but in the Catholio world. The dooument even goes so far aa to talk about Mias Cecelia Lopex and Mias Paulina Lopez, No. 1722 Kaoe street. This scandal ia discredited by good Cath olics, hot ocoaaiona muoh oomment.
