HOW THEY GOT BACK HOME.
Mr. E. B. Godfrey, of Fittaburg, ar
rived in New York on Sunday, having
left the former oity on Saturday night.
Attaohed to tha train on whioh he trav
eled was a darkened car, in whiob he
says were huddled abont thirty membera
of the Black Htiszar regiment of Phila
delphia, who had esoaped from the round
bouse. Many were wonnded. The train,
in Ipsasing through the oity, slowed at
every switch, and the soldiers, who wore
in hiding, jnmped on. These men wore
their pantaloons inside ont, and had
thrown away everything else exoept their
shirts. They were in great terror, Mr.
Godfrey says, exparting the train would
be stopped by rioters. Ooo frightened
soldlor sat down by a woman nod asked
her to proteot him. She threw a shawl over
his head, and he oronobad down in a
oorner. At twenty-eighth street the train
was stopped by tha strikers. “Have yon
any of thou Philadelphia men aboard ?”
wm asked. The oondnotor replied in the
negative. A gang of strikers passed
through the oars, but did not discover the
oonaealed soldiers. Keaobiog the last
oar, which waa dark and Beamed deserted
they wore told that there were fonr
wonnded men therein. They did not at
tempt to enter, The train was started
again, bnt the soldiers were in a state of
Wild terror. They expected to be stopped
by telegraph at Derry. Mr. Godfrey
thicks this was intended, for a large num
ber of strikers were gathered there, but
the train dashed through without stop
ping. The same fear was shown by the
soldiers on the approaoh to Johnston, but
the train wm not Btopped. Tho soldiers
were thoroughly paoio-atrioken, Mr. God
frey says, and it was not till Altoona was
passed that they became reassured.

From ab Interview In the New York Tribune.
“Beyond any question we shall lose
Wisconsin, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The
Democrats will have 75,000 majority tn
New York. Onr parly ia going to pieoea.
We ere all broken np, and I am afraid the
rain is irretrievable. I don't care inuoli
for my own grievance, but it makes me
feel melanoboly to see the old party de
atroyed by members of its own house
hold.”
Mr. Peoksrd did not look at all melan
choly as he spoke in this strain. On the
eontrary, be seemed the piotnre of a man
oontented with the world and himself—a
genial philosopher, in fart, acoustomed
to laugh at the reverse of fortune. His
good-humored faoe was seldom without a
smile during the whole conversation. Bnt
the grave ex-Governor and would-be-
Senator, who kept hia seat in tha adjoin
ing room, grew more solemn than ever at
these dismal predictions.
“Do yon see no help for the threatened
downfall of the Bepnbiioan organization?"
the newspaper man asked.
“Yes, if the Preeident would change
bis Osbinet. Let him pnt out Bobnrz,
Everts, Devens and Key, and pnt in Ibeir
S laces good Bepnblioans of the old sort—
toh Chandler for one—and the party
will get right up on its feet again. The
Bepubltcan papers ought to insist on this.
If the leading journals would oom* out
against the Cabinet, it would soon be
ohanged.”
Toward the olose of the talk, which ran
on for some time pretty much in the
above vein, Mr. Packard said be waa on
hia way to MaiDe. “Going a fishing ?’’ he
wm asked. “Yes, I think I shall catch
some fish. I see the Tribune says I’m
not fishing in Hayes' ponds,"he said, with
a laugh.
“There will be some good fishing in
Lake Erie, in the neighborhood of Cleve
land, abont the first of Angnst," suggest'
*C the oorrespondent. “Maybe yon will
happen around that way."
“Very possible," replied Mr. Packard.
“I shall be going back to New Orleans

From tha Wheeling Koglitor.]
A Confederate soldier from tha Valley
of Virginia, in one of the bnttlos of th9
late civil war, was struck in tho bead by a
Minnie ball. Tbe ball passed through
tbe skull, and the surgeons, afraid to
probe tbe wound in search of it, left tbe
man to die. In tbe ooarse of time be re
covered, bat had lost bis reason and was
sent to tbe inssns asylum at Staunton,
where he remained for eleven years. At
length Dr. Fauntleroy, an eminent physi
cian of that oity, obtained permission
from tba Mylam authorities aud friends
of tbe insane man to make a Bnrgiual ex
amination of tba bead with tho hope of
finding the ball. He was Bneeessfal, and
found tbe ball embeded ati the inside of
tbe skull and pushing agaiust tbe brain.
Unable to exlraatit with any instrument at

Another case in the same county of

SON OF DB. BOWEN—SAVED FROM LYNCH'

Special to the Floayane.]
Hazlehubst, Miss., Jnly 26.—There
was a fatal ehooting at Manobao, yester
day evening, et half-past 6 o'olook.
negro killed a white man. A notorious
negro, named Iverson Evans, an excur
sionist from Crystal Springs ran against
yonng man named Hnbbard Bowen, son
of Dr. Bowen, of Brookhaven, calling him
a d— rod of a b—, and pushed bim off
tbe traok. A gentleman named Allen in
aompany with Bowen, said: “Bowen
yon don't want to fight ?"
He answered, “No, bnt I must not be
shoved off the traok.” As be said this tbe
negro drew a pistol and shot Bowen
through tbe heed, tbe ball entering bis
eye. He died in abont five minates. The
negro gave hia pistol to another negro
and exelaimad that the yonng man bad
shot himself. Bat another negro who
saw tbe shooting pointed to the aesbbtrd
where he had taken the pistol from.
The negro wm arrested. A number of
negro ezonreioniats wanted to hang bim
on the apotj end oommeneed to rig np a
gallows for the purpose, bnt tbe white
wen preeent prevailed on the negroes to
let tbe law have its ooarse; tbe negro was
taken to Amite, where he ia lodged safely
in jail. Tbe negro was intozioated when
be did tbe shooting. Tbe body of tbe
tbe yonng man Buwen was taken to tbe
residence of bis father at Brookbaven.
Daring tbe exoitement caused by tbe
killing of yonng Bowen a small sailing ves
sel was pMSing through the draw at Man
obao bridge, wblob tbe engineer, not desi
ring baoked the train on to tbe bridge and
tbe baggage ear went into tbe lake, bnt
fortnnately no one web drowned, bnt there
was terrible exoitement on tbe colored

at the most remarkable case that I

of menial derangement, and while in a
spell ot lunaoy drove an oight-penDy nail
into tbe top of her bead, penetrating tbe
brain—the nail having been driven up to
its bead. Tho nail waa drawn ont, and
tbe woman hM been in sound mental con

Here cornea tbe sensation of tho Iiraaob,
Mrs. Edward Btepbens, attended by
her maid, and creating a riple of excite
ment aa sbe passes. Mrs. Stephens boa
been the beorine of many letters from
here, bnt none of the correspondents
seem to have established ber identity,
olMsing ber as an effulgent daughter of
Israel. In reality, she is tho daughter-in-
law of Mre. Ann H. Stephens, tbe author
ess, and has oertainly succeeded in cre
sting a genuine oommotion, even at Ibis
abode of aommotions.
It is at the water that she exploits her
self. Coming down to tbe beach, arrayed
in georgious attire, and attended by ber
maid, she takes ber seat in a beach-chair,
and bolds an almost imperial levee. Bho
has a smile, a word and a nod for evory
one, and they bustle eaoh other-for
supremacy. The levee oonolnded, sbe
retires to bor bath-house, and reappears,
after awhile, attired in a bathing suit cal
aulated to display ber ebarrna to tbe best
advantage. Her bair is arranged after
Ibo latest mode, and to-day, she was with
difficulty prevented from going into tho
water with several valuable diamond rings
on her fingers. The bath over, she arises
from the water like a rnthor demoralized
Vanns, and ia .met by her maid, who
throws a picturesque bourumue over ber
mistress, the hood is pnlled over her bair,
and, escorted by numerous osvaliers, she
prooeeds in state to ber batb-hoase, and
tbe morning sensation ia over. Tbe other
day an artist from one of the illustrated
papers made a portrait of her for publica
tion. The Stephens, indeed, has a surfeit
of notoriety, and while tbe women envy,
tbe men adore her.
