—One wholesale bouse in Savannah sold
during the month of August one hundred
and twenty-five thousand dollars worth
of goods.
—White births in Fnlton county, from
July 1st, 1876,to July 1st, 1877, were 398,

—A oolored youth, aged eight years,
named Booy Lewis, and a native of Cuth-
bert, fell out of a tree on Monday and

—B. W. Smolk, who was arrested in
Atlanta, on a charge of cheating and

—A Covington negro woman, who is
engaged os a cook, contributes a part of
her monthly wages to the support of her
old “mistiss," who is now quite old and
feeble, and resides in the oonntry.
—The Buna Vista Argus remarks: “Our
Itepresentative, Bowel T. Hollis, though
opposed to the call of a Constitutional
Convention, is well pleased with the new
constitution and intends voting for its
ratification.”
—Friday morning there arrived at Sa
vannah on the Central Bailroad a new
patent refrigerator car, loaded with two
hundred kegs of lager beer, pails of but
ter, etc. The oar is said to be a very su
perior one and a novelty in this section.
— ltev. Henry Burns has been taking
the Macon Telegraph and Messenger or
its predecessors sixty years, having sub
scribed for the first copy of the Georgia
Messenger in 1817. The Telegraph and
Messenger itself is comparatively a new
paper.
—Judge Buchanan, in passing on the
question of jurisdiction in the case of a
negro lunatio, deoided in Meriwether Su
perior Court last week that the Ordinary
alone has jurisdiction in cases of lunacy.
He also stated that the law required no
jury in casoB of oolored lunatios, and
henoe a jury in suoh a case was entitled
to no pay.
—The former residence of Dr. H. H.
Freal, at Kingston, Bartow oounty, occu
pied by the family of Bobert Dohme,
Esq., was totally destroyed by fire on last

house was totally destroyed. The con
tents were partially saved in a damaged
condition. Fortunately the bouse and
contents were fully insured.
—Hon. lieason Paul, of Irwin county,
died very suddenly (it is supposed of heart
disease) on Thursday last. He had been
working during the forenoon upon his
cotton gin, and was on his way to bis
dwelling when attaoked with a pain.
There were with him two men, one of
whom started after Mr. Paulk’s buggy to
Mr. Paulk
road officials, and 8enator Beese, liepre-
aeutatives James and General Austell,
railroad directors, and they predict no
opposition of any aaoount from the rail -
road interests of the State, as nothing
could be gained by such a warfare, in- the
end, oven though it should dofeat ratifi
cation. As to the ltadioals, I have con
versed with the best men among the high
officials, and they have no idea now
(whatever they may have anticipated
weeks ago) of organizing any party move
ment in favor of their Constitution of
1868. Ex-Goxernor Bullock from the
very first (when Democrats themselves
were doubtful) deolarcd his faith in the
suocess of the movement, and that when
the Convention should meet and finish its
work, the people would ratify It by n large
majority. The greatest opposition that I
have yet seen comes from n few ambitions
sore headed mombors of the General As
sembly, whoso untimely decapitation
promises to end their political caroer.
And'they are frantically and vainly en
deavoring to drum up rooruita. The
newspapers that aided them iu abasing
the Convention while in session, taking
the wise advloo of Senator Hill, are
swinging around in support of the new
Constitution before “lightning" strikes
them.

—The oonrt bouse at Fort Gaines, Clay

jointly by the oity authoritiea of Fort
Gaines and the authorities of Clay oounty.
Beoently there has been a olasb of juris

My time as a shadow Is fled
And gently I lay myself down
To rest with the peaceable dead.

—The Albany News directs inquiry to
a sale of about a million and a quarter
acres of land, by W. H. Smyth, United
States Marshal at Savannah, on last Tues
day, to satisfy fifas in favor of A. O. Soba
fer A Co., vs. Geo. M. Duncan, and Geo.
C. Hall vs. Warren E. Saunders, property
pointed out by agent of the transferee in
fi fa. The News continues: One of the
defendants in fi fa waa once a resident of
Dougherty county, to-wit, Geo. M. Dun
can, and if be owned any land outside of
hiH tittle plantation, the Sheriff of the
oouoty aud his oreditors oould not find it,
'nor do the tax boAks show it. The other
defendant, Warren £. Saunders, is not
known by old laud dealers of the State,
He is a new man in tho land business. Iu
comparing the lists of lauds published by
the Comptroller General as being iu de
fault, and the lands sold at this sale, we
find quite a large number of the lots the
same as reported by the Comptroller Gen
eral. If these lands have not been re
turned or have no owner, does not the
State hold a claim on them for taxes, and
does not the above foot show plainly that
there is frand songht to be practioed not
only on individuals bnt on tba State ?
Now this business may be oarried on in
other States but it will not hold in Geor
gia. The Comptroller General and Attor
ney General must find out the inner bsiu-
ness of this affair. There is a law in
Georgia against it whiob puts a man in
the penitentiary for four yarn.
—Sidney Herbert from Atlanta thus

latter 85 years each.
—The desperado and murderer Hardin
was arrested in Penaaoola by Sheriff'
HutobinBon, the Texas officials having
nothing to do with it. They agreed to
divide the reward offered for Hardin's
apprehension with Mr. Hntohinson
—Selma Times: General Morgan will
greatly please the white people of Alaba
ma if he will prevent the confirmation of
L. E. Parsons sb U. S. Distriot Attorney.
Mr. HByes could not have pieked ont a

THE MOST POPULAR PILL
r furnished the American people. Th
est medical authorities concede their superiority
over all others, because they possess alterative,
tonic, and healing properties contained in no
other medicine. Being strongly Anti-Bilious,
they expel all humors, correct a vitiated state of
the system, and, being purely vegetable, they
do not, like other pills, leave the stomach and
bowels in a worse condition than they found
them, but, on the contrary, impart a nealthy
tone and vigor before unknown.
