That deg ran along ide the engine. It was too smart to get on the track. O e day he started as usual, but it wss a little further from the station, and as be was running with all bl» might looklt g up at the cars, trying to bark, when the train went over a culvert, and ‘bom e’ went the deg head firs* down in the mud and water severe 1 feet. That d g must have imagined the train did it, be cause he never alter that would run a race with it Once while luuuing at a very fast clip I noticed two little boys near a bouse with a big bull dog The dog was an old bruise - , ready to fight anylbing Just as the locomotive came near the ooys clap ped (heir hands and shouted to the dog to ‘go for him.’ The dog did g for the locomotive. The pilot caught him, threw him clear over the smoke stack, and when he c me down he struck with hie back on the valve stem, rolled o0 in the ditch and ran for borne without being burl." “Isn’t itallttleex'radrdinary," in quired the reporter, “that the deg wasn’t hurt 7" “0 t, no " said the engineer. “I have seen chickens on the track run over by the locomotive and they would c< me out under thed ivlng wheel without being killed. The wind must have caught them some how and thrown them like a puff ball around without hurting them. When you strike a big obj tot then It is diflersnt One night a big bull got on the track W aen he saw the light of the locomotive he pawed and circled bis tail and bellowed, head down, ready for bat le Wo bad no time to shut down, and the only way to do is to strike such objects with full force in order to knock them away from tbe track. If they fall ou the littok . they are liable tb get under Ite wheels aud throw the en glue off the rails. Ho I gave her 'a few pegs,’ and the mcchine fairly raised from the track. When it struck tbe bull it was square on the head. Tne big uuimal was thrown twenty or thirty feet, und then rolled down a etiep embankment and weal out of «ight. O toe In a while a dog will be thrown with great force, eaw a dog struck one day aud he seemed to be all rol'e I up.
