DEAD ON HER KNEES.

While the rosy-faced children of
Mrs JoDea’ family were making
merry over the lent of their holiday
prewate in their borne, No 641 Wash*
Ington street, yesterday morning,
says the New York SuDcay World,*
woman was on her knees in the room
above the laughing boys and girls.
But the woman on bar knei s was
not praying. She was oold and stilt.
She was dead 1 She was cslted "the
mysterious lodger " Mrs Thomas
Jones, the landlady, said: "My
lodger came to me one day— perhaps a
year ago—and engaged a little room in
the attic at (1 a week. Her name was
Agnes Ryan. She was a very quiet
woman and said little to any person
I remember bow very fond she was
of children, and when she passed
them on the street or in the l a'l ehe
caressed them aid always Skid a
pleasant word. Once when payiig
me the rent she put her hand ou my
boy’s bead and stroked his ourls
Then s’.e said, as a std look caune
over her face: I have a little boy
who lives with my stator. Since hi»
father left me, seven years ago, I have
been very pier, and sometimes can
hardly earn my bread. My life has
been very unhappy, and my only Joy
is In thinking of the fine little fell< w
who ta growing up Some day he
will be a strong, brave man. Hnv
proud I shall be (ben, and what a
ci.mb rt he will be in my old age 1"
"Well," continued Mrs Jones, -'the
woman oame in very softly every
evening and went out vary softly
every morning to her work. Sue
made cloaks for a pittance when she
could get them to make. Where
she got her meals, I never knew. A
week ago when Tours Jay oame site
did not pay her rent. Well,’ said I,
‘you area poor woman, and the holt*
days have come. You want to bay
yoar boy some presents, but work
may be dull, I’ll wait until the holi«
days are over ’ So she oame and
went os softly oa the snow—or at
least I thought she did. I seldom saw
bet ehe same and went so qaietly.
Yesterday morning I sold I
would go up and oolleot the rent.
Her door wae closed There was no
answer to my kaock. The door was
locked. Then I stoopid to lock
through the key-hols and saw her on
her knees My Go d she wss dead

there we found the poor creature a

of the old residents of that section do
not hesitate t > assert that at tim a he

was able lawyer. At the close
of the evidence Mr Cooper arose and
made a splendid argument on bis
side of the case, oiomug by saying
that bis ltgal opponent was preju

beautiful women. "Why," said Mr
Cooper, "when Col Ingersoll gels •

correct. I do have a leaning in the
direction of beautiful women. I do
love a beautiful woman. I love the

beautiful mother. I tell you what it
is, gentlemen of the Jury, I would
