DAILY ENQUIRED. SDN, COLUMBUS, GEORGIA, WEDNESDAY MORNING, JANUARY 27, 1886. GENERAL R E- LEE- Bl, l|i>ek «■ ik« (*■- ■m« la Virginia. Washington, Jidotv 24 —Ex- Senator Puttieioy, of Ksntai, who eaye be ovethettid the interview in which General R ibcrt E Lee accept* ed the ctmm&iid of the troops of Virginia, reports it as follow*: “The chairman said that they had beeD sent on by the convention of Virginia, then in session at R ch- naoiid, to express to General L e, as the most distinguished soldier and one of the most distinguished citl- atns of the state, their ooi fldence and esteem and to tender him the oommand of the troops that had been raised to repel an expected invasion from the north. WEIGHT OF THE RESPONSE. “Be continued at some length and concluded by saying that the re sponse of Gen Lee to the call of bis state would have great influence in shaping the destiny of the common wealth. Gen Lee listened to the speech with his eyes oast down, and when he raised his bead to reply I saw an expression on his face that looked as if bis mind was fully made np, add hie reply would be direct and positive. From what I had heard I expected him to decline and make a protest against s cession, and bis first words encouraged me in that expec tation. use’s reply. "He said : 'Gentlemen, I am op posed to war, although bred to the profession of a soldier, and I deeply deplore civil war—strife between brother and brother—but,’ he con tinued, and his words reared me, ‘but I hear the voice of Virginia, like the voice of a mother, calling me to the defense of a soil that is as scored to me as the ashes of my ancestors who lie buried here. I cannot resist the call of a state to which I ewe my first allegiance, but I wish you to under stand, gentlemen, (hat I draw my sword only in her defense, with the prayer that in asserting her sovereign rights we may not be compelled to shed the blood of our brethren.’ “He then said be would report at once to the governor at Richmond, and invited tbe party into the house." Floe serii-K* .r eurl’j The increased favor given by fash ion to low-necked evening dress has encouraged the jewelers to put togeth er some very beautiful and costly necklaces. Three strings of pearls recently shown in this city were val ued at $3200, $2200 aid $1500 respect ively, without tbe pretty diamond olasps which fastened them. The pearls were graduated, and of beauti ful color ana shape, but as one must be a poet to love Spenser, one must be acoustomed to Jewels to appreciate the refined beauty of pearls, and half the women who saw the three necklaces and some rival diamonds which bi-zed near them in another necklace would bnve choieu the diamonds if uot informed of their comps a'ive cheapness. Tbe ccst of this pretty bauble was $750, and it was a single band of stones in a light gold setting, but it bad a star pend ant, with a great sapphire in the oei • tre, wbtoh added two-thirds more to its price, end was a beautiful orna ment by Itself. Tbe combinations of diamonds and colored stones are very fine this sees >n, not only Id pendants, but also in rlugs. O .eof tbe latter, in which a tutquois as big as a bum ming bird’s egg is surrounded by 1 diamond sparks, is pretty enough to i figure in one of Mrs Spofford’s stone?. — Boston Transcript. | Ot legated la iiauia. Crew'nnlvll:*, G’, Demoor**, B B B is without doubt one of the most valuable and popular medicines known to the medical science, and has relieved mi're suf fering humanity than any other medicine since it came into use. It has never failed in a single in stance to produce the most favora ble results where it has been prop erly used. Pnysicians everywhere recommend it as doing all it is claimed to do. The following certificates are from two prominent physicians, who have done a large and successful practice for many years, and upon whose judgment the publio can safely rely: Crawfordville, Ga, July 15,1885, Editor Democrat: For the past ten years I have been suffering with rheumatism in the mupcles of my right shoulder and neck. During this time I have tried various rem edies, both patent medicines and those prescribed by physicians. Last summer I commenced using B B B, and could see an improve ment by the time I had taken one bottle, 1 have been taking it at intervals since last summer, and can iay it is the best medicine for rheumatism I have ever tried. I take pleasure in recommending it to the public. J W RHODES, A M, M D. Crawfordville, Ga, July 15, 1885 Editor Democrat: About No vember of last year I had what I suppose! to be a cauliflowi r ex crescence on right side of neck. I rued local applications, which effected no perceptible good. I commenced the use of 13 B B and took it regularly twelve bottles, and in due time the sore healed over, and I now consider it well. I cheerfully recommend it as a fine tonic and alterative medicine. S J FARMER, M D. MEAL RAG ON A BEAN POLE Elberton, Ga, June 1, 1885. I was troubled with bleeding piles since 1858. I used one bottle of B B B and have felt nothing of the kind since taking the medicine. The clothing that I was wearing when I left Atlanta fitted me about the same as a meal sack would a bean pole. I have on the same doming now, and they are a tight fit. You can do as you like with this; as for me and my household, we think three B’s is fully orthodox, and will do lo swear by.
