MONEY IN ORANGE FRUIT Fertile Laadt Which Clear More Than #1000 an Aera-I Ureal Bella • eaa In Fmradn. Palaika, Fla, February 10 — Orange growing in nearly the all- absorbing buaineeu in Florida. There are In the northern part of the state a di Ban oouoliea where the land la not, adap'ed to the growing,' of tte orange to any great extent for the market. When you enter the state you see a few drag gling trees bearing sour oranges, for which variety there Is no market. Upon reaobing Jacks nville, in Du val oounty, the visitor will see more of these sour orange trees, and In the streets of Jacksonville it is no uncommon sight to see the negro boys paying snows ball with the fruit. In the entire slate there are about fifteen million acres of land wuere orangc-s can be grown for the market. In ibis terri tory tbe savannahs, flat woods, scrub iund, barrens, swamps, rivers aDd iak.es embrace about 8 000.000 acres, which leaves 7,000,000 uores, or ibout one-fifth of the e'ate, for pufitable orange ouliure. But even in this territory there aiuyt be grown lemon*, banams, pineapples, corn, cane, cot ton, rioe and other pioduols. It is, therefore, iair to presume that Dot more th&n one.tenth, < r even one* twentieth ot tbe state will e feral ore time be devoted to tbe gr wlrg of the orange. The consumption of oranges has been more than doubled during the past ten j ears, and will continue to inertase; come quently one cannot slate at what time in tbe future the cultivation of the oraDge will be overdone. In tbe purchase of land for oiange culture ■he price of the land is *ne of the most important items. Laud a: $1 per acre, ten miles from the steamers or railroads, is dear in comparison with land of the Btmr quality within one mile of transportation, at $100 or even $200 per acre. It is easy to make this suggestion plain. O.te acre of orange grove infullbaaring wilt produce ttn tons of oranges "To transport by wagon o: e load a day of half a ton, ten miles through tbe sand will require a strong double team at $4 per day. The cost 1 f transpor tation by wsgon w.ll avenge $80 ptr acre pery> ar. If, on the inner hanu, the orange grove be near a dep >t or wharf, the whit e product of lie acre may be hauled and shipped by the same tesm in a single day at a oo.-t of $4, a net saving ol $70 per acre. The cost of clearing pine laud and fencing is. about $20 per acre. To clear and ft nee hummock land will oust $40 per acre. The cost i f first plow ing will be $2 50 per acre. From sixty to one bundled trees are plant ed to thescre. Of the one hundred varieties of oranges, about ten varie ties rank high, and it era's no more to cultivate a good tree ihan a poor one- Budded trees cost from 50 to 76 cents each The orange trees have enemies The soale insects, white ants and the calamander, so cali-d, have destroy ed large numbers of trees. It is one thing to grow orange wood and quite another tnir.g to keep it aiive and healthy. But there is a remeiy for this evil, as for all others. The aver age net yield of the orange tree is about $200 profit to tbe sore. Tbe in stances wnere large pri fl s have been made are few. The cu*e of the fa mous Steer grove wilt serve for Ulus- nation, About the year 1870, L).\ Steer came to Fiords and settled near Sanford. His grove now consist^ of 550 orange trees. 500 of whtoh are nmong tbe best in the state. The grove has been fertilized each year f<>- 'he pant three years at a cost of $250 .per annum Oue man dees ail the work around the trees, except thegacl e tng, mak lug Ihe total yearly outlay about $500 The Steer'grove Is t>ow ftill grown, and will cost bu' $500 a y ar for the rest pf the doe'or’s ra trial life, and even longer*. During tbe p»sf season there were sold Irom that grove : 'X brshtlb orange seed...— —5 97 SO 80,100 orary are'at ed SI toe g ova, 1*75 btz-H iblpped, and reealpU r.oelv.d for tbe acme 9 258 80 Dae from aalea not received 621 95 t9 778 26 ThiB shows a net profit of nearly $9500 from eix acres of land. The grove will pay for itself this year, and a comfortable income will follow for a hundred years. However, this Is an exceptional case The business ot orange growing la like everything lisp. It takes money to make money A poor muu oauhot expect to make a fortune isi Florida in one year, or In five years. He must labor and wait, but his reward will come in time. rooa (allure, Iadl?n*pcUs News.
