came towns have been 11 354 bales
more than the same week last year,
and since September 1 the receipts
at all the towns art 532 507 bales more

The exports for the week ending
this evening reach a total of 82.094
bales, of which 48 673 wore to Great
Britain, 879 to France and 32,542 to
the rts‘. of the continent.
The Chronicle cemments on Its
table of teoeipta from plantations as
follows :
The above statement shows—
1 That the to a! receipts from the
plantations since September 1, 1885
are 5 033,860 bale*-; in 1884 85 were
4 628,864 baler; in 1683 84were 4.578,e
645 bales,
2 That, although the receipts at
the outports the past wet k wen 68,223
bales, the actual movement from
plantations was only 68 025 bales, the
balar ce being taken from the stocks
at the interior towns. Last year the
receipts from the plantations for the
tame week were 39 563 bales and for
1884 they were 46,935 bales.
In the table below we give the re>
ceipts from plantations in another
fotm, and add to them the net oveis
land movement to March 1, and also
the takings by southern spinners to
the same dale, so as to give substan
tially the amount of cotton now in
sight.
It will be seen by the above that
the inciease In ameunt in sight to
night, as compared with last year, is
545 848 bales, the increase as compar
ed with 1883 84 is 626 279 bales, and
the decrease front 1882 83 is 185 238
The Curoulclt’s ttlt-graphic weath
er reports fer the week are thus sum
marized:
There has been rain in about all
sections of the south during the week
and rathtr heavy rain iu most dis
tricts of the southwest. Some of our
correspondents report that planting
preparations aro very backward.

Washington, March 2 —The sub
ject ef pensions receives considerable
attention in every congress, and oons
sidering that fact it is remurkable
how poorly understood the subject is
and how many curious things re
ward a little search. To begin with,
there are two distinct kinds of pena
sions, and it would be pcsrible for the
same person to draw money under
both il the law were so interpreted.
The first class is for service and the
second is for disability. The first. Is
paid to pensioners of the war of 1812-
15 and the second to pensioners of
the Mexican and civil wars, A sol
dier in (he Mexican campaign or the
rebellion must prove that he incurred
a disability in the service and in the
strict line of his du y. Fourteen
days' &cual eervice after enlistment
is quite sufficient to entitle a veteran
of ihe war with England to a service
pension.
In April last there were thirteen
widows of soldiers of the revolution
on tbs roil; but several of these have
since died. But when we oaue to
the war ol 1812 15, there are 2945 sur-
viving pensioners, and 17 212 survlv*
ing widows, or a total ol 20,157. The
truth seems to be that a pensioned
veteran is an object of affectionate ao-
Ikiltnte to pretty much all the fore,
sighted young women In his neigh
borhood. Their attention cannot be
expected to otherwise tban delight
the old fellows, who, by marrying
them, make them their residuary
legatees.
Official records of the Mexican war,
aa shown me to day by First Deputy
Commissioner McLean, indicate that
up to the let of July last there have
been on the rolls for disability S809
surviving soldiers and 3816 widows
of that war who have Inherited pen
sions from deoeased husbands, or a
total of 7619. It Is safe to estimate,
nays McLean, that more tban one-
half of those put on the rolls for
Mexican service are not now draw
ing money from the treasury, having
been dropped on account of death of
claimant, remarriage of widow, ces
sation of disability or disloyalty.
"How many persons would proba
bly be emilkd to a ptnuiou lor Mexi
can service under a general law grant-,
ing pensions for service instead of
disability?" was asked.
"Commissioner Back estimates
the survivors at 34,483, the widows
at 14,512, or a total of 18,998," an
swered Mr McLean.
As yon are likely to hear more
about the men who fought in the
Mexican war at an early uay, It may
be stated that the total strength of
the army and navy on May 1. 1848,
when hostilities began, was 14,754
The enlistments were 108,785,
making a total force of 123,609 Of
these 17,724 did not serve in Mexico,
and therefore never became candA
dates for pensions. Commissioner

Ucidiea* hi Ihe Opera.
A favorite costume at the opera and
balls is a waibi without neck or
sleeves, and in some instances not
even shoulder straps. I; you can im
agine a woman with no other waist
tl a l her corsets you can get a good
idea of this new cut, B me ladles,
whose modesty will not allow them
to go the whole length of this fashion
wear feather instead ot shoulder
straps. I heard of one lady the other
day, whose modesty forbids her
wearing one of these waistp, but
who bated to be thought unfashiona
ble, and who, as a compromise with
her con cienoe, wore fLeh-colorvd
ohamois skin that fitted her to tight
ly the very elect could
not tell which was the skin of the
chamois and which was the skin
of the lady. It is unfortunate that
these ladies of fashion should have
any motet compunctions, for it
sometimes makes them eel a little
uncomfortable in their evening un
dress; but it seldom interferes''with
their adopting the costumes of the
day. The man who said that he waa
Inclined to leave the opera house be
cause he felt that he was playing the
role ot Pe ping Tom and looking at
ladies iu their oath tubs, just about
described the effect produced by some
of tl e e costumes. The worst of it iB
that the more that is written and the
more that is said or the Bubjeot only
drives these ladies to further teng'.hs.

With my experience I pronounce
BREWER’S LUNG RESTORER
the best lung remedy made. Four
of my brothers and sisters had
died with consumption, and about
three years ago I became so ex
hausted by long continued cough,
accompanied with low fever and
night sweats, that I could barely
get about, and my friends gavo up
all hope. I coughed so incessantly
that I could not sleep at all. After
trying several lung medicines I be
gan the use of BREWER’S LUNG
RESTORER and was greatly ben
efited by the first bottle, gaining
fiesh and strength and resuming
work. I continued to take it and
am as stout now as I ever was, rare
ly ever cough, nor do I suffer with
my lungs any more than if tin y had
never been effected.
I am never without a bottle of it
in my house. During the winter I
gave it to mv little children, even a
little fellow three years old, for any
thing like commor colds, or when
they show any evidence of croup,
and always with the most satisfac
tory results. Very truly,
G E HUGELY,

RHEUMATIC CURE!
Infallible for Elite math m and all Blood and Kidney Diseases.
Read two of our very strong certificates :
A short time ago I suffered terribly with rheumatism. It was im
possible to walk even with erutches. I could not put my foot to tho
floor. I found no relief from (realment or remody until I tried Hunni-
cutt’s Rheumatic Cure. Before I had finished taking one bottle I was
able to walk comfor ably with my crutches. Before I had finished the
second bottle my rheumatism was entirely gono. I put my crutches
aside and have never felt a twinge of rheumatism since. I am well, and
can say my cure is perfect and permanent It is certainly a wonderful
medicine. ALBERT HOWELL,
Union Ticket Agent, Atlanta, Ga.
ATLANTA, GA., January 6, 1886. - Messrs J M Hunnicutt &Co:
I have been a sufferer with kidney iroubles for seventeen years, and
have been treated by prominent physicians of tiiis state and Alabama,
j I have used large quantities of medicines advertised to cure blood and
kidney diseases, without receiving the slightest benefit. About six
j weeks ago I suffered such intense pain- -scarcely being able to breathe
at times- I concluded to try "Hunnicutt’s Rheumatic Cure,’’and after
' using one bottle was entirely and absolutely cured, and for the first time
I in seventeen years Iain without the slightest pain, and earnestly recom-
' mend all who suffer to give your cure a trial.
