Political
A special of the 3d from Washington (o the
Charltsfon News of the l!b. puts Bontwell in a
new aspect. It rends ns follows :
Prominent Northern Republicans write that
Secretary B mtwell is strennonalj opposing the
proscriptive policy of the administration toward
Dent and Hamilton, the Conservative candidates
for Governor in Miaftiasippi and Texas. He
urge s that this policy, if persisted in, will infal
libly give the Democracy the control of the en
tire South ftt no distant day.
Positive information has l>een received here
of a r died combination designed to delay the
admisniuti of Virginia until Congress shall have
ei c>d the test oath as a qualification for the
Legislature, so « s to seenre. beyond peradven-
ture, the election of Radical senators.
A private tolcgr-im from Nashville says that
the Tennessee Legislature meets to-morrow, and
that an informal count puts Andrew Johnson
ahead in the contest for the Senate. The Hon.
A. O P. N’.cbolsoa, Democrat, who was consid
ered Johnson’s most formid ible opponent, has
declined to allow his name to be used as a can
didate.
A Liberal Sctplt op Mails.—The Memphis
Avalanche tells this story about a negro mail
agent on the Mississippi Railroad :
The other day he started Honth from Jackson
with a heavy mail for most of the way .stations.
H« dealt out letters and papers so freely for the
first half of his journey, that he had none left
for the remainder. Having got rid of his tron-
bleKoine charge ns quickly as decency would
permit, himself and hiH deputies—he gives a lift
now and then to a poor traveling darkey, whom
he constitutcM a deputy during the ride—took a
smoke. They were aroused up nt Aberdeen,
where inquiries were made about the mails.
Mono mbb< d his eyes and yawned, then looking
round dubiously for several minuteH, bo all nt
once became conscious that ho had none; said
he, then, ‘Lor, Hah! I gub 'em all away up here,
BAh l I hasn't got a scrap." From that paint
down the unfortunate people had to go without
their mails.
A Fearptl scene took place on September 1
on board the Lady WodehOTJHe ste .mer, bound
from London to Dublin. Several casks of pe
troleum and lucifer matches formed a part of the .
cargo, and during the galo the lashings of the ;
petroleum casks on the forecastle gave way, and, j
being d-ished against tho chests of lucifer*, im
mediately ignited. Tho petroleum oinks rolled
Away to tho Centre of the vessel, set fire to the
aide of the saloon, burnt down the glass roof of j
the gentlemen's sleeping berths, and fired two
of the life boats. Tbe fl imt-s rose with fearfnl
rapidity to a groat height above the deck, and
for three hours tho crew and paw tigers were t
engaged in attempting to extinguish tho fire, |
the stench from the petroleum being Almost
overpowering. When the flro was at last thought
%> have been subdued, il.imes wero again seen
Ascending from tbe deck of the vessel, owing, it
was found, to the chests of lucifer matches hav
ing spontaneously ignited. This second fire was,
howevor, soon put ont, and then tbo whole of
the petroleum casks and the lncifer matches were
thrown overboard.
TnE Independent says one of tbo reasons for
the success of Rev. Henry Ward Beecher, os a
preacher, is the shape of his church. It is as
well arranged as a theatre for seeing and hear
ing Tho congregation is massed about the
speaker. Every member is in direct and sym
pathetic relation with him. He, in turn, is the
centre of the magnetic current of tho whole
house, the focus of the inspiration «»f tho entire
assembly. The same is true of'Spurgeon and
his immense tabernacle. It requires a strong
man to occupy such a position, but when ho is
equal to it there is scarcely auy limit to his
power.
Georgia Politic*.—It is reported from At
lanta that th«* Deniooratio leaders of Georgia
have proposed to reinstate the expelled negro
members of the Legislature, on condition that
the political«ill res nt Governor Bullock's dis-
pos.il.ilre shared with thorn. The Era spurns
this offer, and demands the reinstatement of
the negro members of the Legislature as a mat
ter of right. That's rich.

Ayer’s Sarsaparilla,
FOB PURHme THE BLOOD.
Tho reputation this e»,
ccllcnt medicine enjoys,
is derived from its cures,
many of which aro of *
truly marvellous char
acter. Inveterate cases
of Scrofula, where the
system scorned utterhr
given up to corruption,
nave yielded to this com
pound of anti-strumous
virtues. Disorders of a
scrofulous type, and af
fections which arc merely
aggravated by tho presence of scrofulous matter,
hare been radically cured In such numerous in
stances. in every settlement in tho country, that tho
public ao not need to be informed here that it is in
most cases a specific and absolute remedy.
Scrofulous poison ia one of tho most destructivo
enemies of our race. Often, this un-eeix arid unfelt
tenant of the organism unuerminc* the constitution,
and invites the attack of enfeebling or fatal diseases,
without exciting a suspicion of its presence. Again,
it *ocm3 to breed infection throughout tho body, and
then, on some Cavora’alo occasion, rapidly develop
into ono or other of its hideous forms, either on tho
surface or among tho vitals. Ia the latter, tuber
cles may bo suddenly deposited in tho lungs or
heart, or tumors formed in tho liver. These facts
make the occasional use of tho Sarsaparilla as a
preventive, advisable. •
It is a mistake to suppose that so long as no erup
tions or humors appear, there must bo no scrofulous
taint. Tlic.-ic forms of derangement may never
occur, ana yet tnc vital uf tiio »*ody !»c so re
duced by its subtle agency, as materially to Impair
the health and shorten the duration of life. It is a
common crror^also, that scrofula is Btricily heredi
tary. It does, indeed, descend li om parent to child,
but is also engendered in persons born of pure
blood. Low living, indigestion, foul air, licentious
habits, uncleanlines?, aud tho depressing vices gen-
crally, produce it. \Y cakly constitution*, where not
fortified by the most constant and judicious care,
arc peculiarly liable to it. Yet tho robust, also,
whose turbidLlood swells the veins with an appar
ently exuberant vitality, are often contaminated,
and on the road to its consequences. Indeed, no
class or condition can depend on immunity from
it, nor feel insensible to the importance of an cffcc-
tn.il ieincdy.
In St. Anthony's Fire, Jtose or Frt/sipelas,
for Tetter, Salt Rheum, Scald Bead, Ring-
tcovm, Sore Bars and Eyes, and other eruptive
or visible forms of the diseases caused primarily by
the scrofulous infection, the Sarsaparilla is so ef
ficient as to be indispensable. And in the more
concealed forms, as in Dyspepsia,Dropsy, Heart
Disease, Fits, Epilepsy, Seuralyia, and other
affections of tho niu-culariad nervous systems, tho
Sarsaparilla, through its purifying power, re
moves the cause of the disorder ana produces aston
ishing cures.
The sarsaparilla root of the tropics docs not by
itself achieve these results. It is aided by the ex
tract* combined with it, of still greater power. So
potent is this union of healing virtues, Syphilis or
Venereal and Mercurial Diseases are cured by
il ; though a long time is required for subduing theso
obstinate maladies by any medicine. Jjeucorrhoca
or Waites, Uterine Ulcerations, and Female
Diseases in general, are commonly soon relieved
and ultimatelv cured by the invigorating and puri
fying effect of our Sarsaparilla. Rheumatism
and Gout, often dependent on the accumulations of
extraneous matters in the blood, have their remedy
also In this medicine. For Dicer Complaints,
torpidity, inflammation, abccss, etc., caused by
rankling poisons in. the blood, we unhesitatingly
recommend the Sarsaparilla.
This medicine restores health and vigor where no
.cpccifl : diioasc can be di-tingui-hed. Its restora
tive power is soon felt by those who are Languid,
Listless, Despondent’, Sleepless, and filled with
Sereous Apprehensions or Fears, or who aro
troubled with any other of tho£e affections symp
tomatic of weakness. Many, after Liking ii for
General Debility, have written us of the youth
ful vigor imparted to their nervous system, which
seemed buovant with that prolific life they thought
had departed on the advance of age. Others, whoso
fountains of life wore always sterile, acknowledge
their obligations to it for an* obvious change.
