With great labour, the most of the Cotton was preserved without da nage, being removed on board the steam-boat. About one hundred bales only, it is suppos- ’ ed, will be materially injured, though a cong siderable f_antity was left Hoatiffgin ilff river, but tjKared. [Nat.'Lnt. ■The bill has at length passed the House ] d’ Representatives, which has been forseve *ral years on the. tapis, for occupying the Mouth of the Oregon, or Columbia River. It has been so amended as not to contemplate, even prospectively, a civil or territorial form of government. The occupation will there fore, for the present, he purely military. The aboriginal name of the River, Ore ao\, will be restored to it, if this bill passes the Senate in its present shape, and we are glad of it. It is a sonorous word, and signi ficant—the meaning of it being, when tran slated, The River that runs to the fVen. —-^o[ .lbid. A scat in the Senate of the United States has become an object of such honorable am bition, that every vacancy in that body is warmly contested. In Connkotwjvt, the Legislature were not able, last spring, to come to a choice at all. In Nrw. .Hamp shire, the Legislature has beeii these three weeks employed in vain attempts t« make a choice, 'flit* same thing seems likely cur in Pennsylvania. We have now to add, that five more ballotings took place on the 17th inst. On the sth ballot, General Marks received 56 votes, Mr. Burnside 51, Mr. Sergeant 19, and two votes were scat tered. On the 18th instant, two more unsuccess ful! attempts were made. On the last bal loting, the following gentlemen received the highest number of votes; Win. Marks 45, Thomas Burnside 35, John Sergeant I 8, S. D. Ingham 18. The further balloting has been postponed to the third Monday in January. , Ibid. Presidency, —“ In case there is no ehoice of President by the House of Repre sentatives of the U. .S. then the duties of, the office will devolve on the Vice President. How many trials are necessary to decide, whether a President can be chosen or not ? Or will a vote of the House, that they cannot effect a choice, decide this point? From a newspaper article we have seen,’it would appear only one trial is permitted.” [Boston Pal. If only one trial were permitted, them k mojif assuredly Ifie duties of President would |r(Jevolve on the Vice President, after the 4th day of Marcli next. Hut the number of trials is limited only by the space which re-j ■mains between the time ot counting the votes in the House of Representatives, and the expiration of the functions of the present Vnembers of that body, at midnight, on the third day of March. There is not, in our opinion, the least reason to doubt, that a choice of President will be made by the House of Representatives. The Members pf the House, it is supposed, will be tena cious of their opinions,, but, without applying to them what Cardinal De Retz has said of mne multitudinous assemblages, we may veniuie to say, that the tenacity must be very strong., which can sustain the fatigue ami suffering of an uninterrupted silting ol two weeks. f £Au/.
