TUESDAY, JANUARY 25, 1825. 1
- . _ I
On Saturday lust we were visited by a
snow storm, and winter seemed in an an
giy moment, to assume all the terrors ol 11
his reign ; but his wrath was of short dura- f
tion, the snows have disappeared anti, calm '
and sunshine have again succeeded. ’ I
Congress seems determined to suppress j 1
Piracy even at theexpei.se of the enmity P
ot Spain, it Commodore' Porter’s incur.k
fion hail been suspended for a few urn. -> ;r
it would in all probability, have been au- h
thorixed by law. Accordum' ts the Bill re- i
ported Senate, and life recommeuda - H
lions ot the President, our officers w.U
luive power to blockade Spanish ports, and
to pursue pirates upon Spanish ground, a
ihe Weakness ol Spain perhaps justi- c
fy suclia proceedure ; bii# will infallibly "
lead stale of things—per- s
haps to opeinlaaility— between the two na- J
tions, ot whicllmireat Britain may so fur '
take advantage, possess herself of Cuba.
Ihe Message <it Clinton is one
of the prominent tupicksyof the newspapers, f
and has received its lull#harc ot both “ good 41
and evil report.” By'shme it is extoded ( ’
as a document of unexampled longtliguid (
equal merit, and by others it is condeni- f
tied as tedious and prosing. As the Gov-
enmr is supposed to be looking to a sea- ‘
ivturyshiji under General Jackson, oy whom *
lie was toasted, it om memory .dues not de
ceive us, at Tammany Hall, a few year's
since, amidst minty wry faces —he mayboj*
pardoned for an overwrought effort to con- 1
vince the nation ot tne wonderful depth of (
his political sagacity ; and there is certainly !
one parted the Message which should meet
a serious consideration every where. He !
deprecates yd pit lie teniis “ the centripetal ’
force” ot the confederacy, and pertinacious
ly clings to the standard of State Rights. ,
Rite southern states will respond his senti
ments, tor whenever the. Gilyernment shall 1
so tar pervert its powers as to trample upoh
the just rights ol* Che Repuldicks 'tout com'- ;
pose it, they must bb the lirst to suffer from
the usurpation. Tiie magnificent, scheme
ot Roads ajul Canals—the attempt to decide
the question ol slavery for newly ‘ created,
smtes —the interference with a defensive
muiiicipal >egi lotion of S. Carolina—the'
enactment pf a high Tariff and the strides
nuking towards a syste u of prohibitory
duties-—are enough to" awaken apprehen
sious tor our future security. I’ne march of
power is never retrograde—and unless there
exists the proper resistance.on .die part of
the states—die Federal Gaveriiiiient will go
oil with its encroachments, until at last die
states, disrobed, ot their powers, will scarce
ly have a rag lei c to cover their naked and
wasted forms. Let “ Obsla p rind inis' 1
then oe die general -watchword—let every
Governor speak out; as did Gw. Wilson 1
and as does Dewit Clinton—let the Legis
latures resolve—the presses utter salutary I
, warnings—and the voice of the people be;
heard, from the family circle to the crowd-!
ed elections. The mingled words oftrutli,
indignation and complaint, i- ay not he
unheeded, and General Jackson himself
should tate make him the President—
may be awed by those who are tiie ti ue sov
ereigns ot tiie land, and before whose will,
even his must quail. The crisis;
is as important as in' cresting. If .Mr, Ad
ams or General Jackson succeed to the Prea-j
idency. the inllucnce ot the Executive will
be . exerted to obliterate the landmarks di-(
yiding the I'ederal and Republican parties.)
J.r,c Kings, Harpers, and Otises thronging
unwind the mock Court at Washington, will j
whisper in die ears ot the monarch ot four
winters, the doctrines ot national suprenia-j
cy,& personal infallibility. A struggle must
ensue between the President at the head of)
a party discarding the name of Federalism,
but retaining its principles— and the Repub
licans, who have suffered their ranks to be
broke* and themselves placed in tiie minor
ity “7 intrigue and cajolery—by clamors
agairtst Caucuses and Radicalism. We are
however informed that Mr. Crawford will |
probably obtain the votes ofKentucky, Ohio!
and Missouri, in which event these illbod-j
ing anticipations may never be realized. !
—ijO©—
The Legislature of Kentucky has bv a
.'.M-ge majority requested the Representa
tives in Congress from that State to support
Gen, Jackson, 'ihe members from Ken
tucky are elected by Districts, and will pro-1
bably not think themselves obliged implicit-;
ly to obey the suggestions of a body having!
no authority to controul their conduct. On
the principle of Caucusing—without the
application of which in some form or other
our i isufutions could not exist---the citi
zens of Kentucky who are assembled by
reason of the performance of
lative duties, have a right to express their
opinions—and the members in Congress
have an equal right to disregard them.

The message of Mr. Monroe desiring
Congress to investigate his claims and pe
cuniary transactions with the Government,
has been referred after a long debate. u» a
select Committee, with instructions to re
port the eviiie ice and explanations to be
received from the President. This course
was adopted at the instance of Mr. For
syth, who wished to avoid all imputations
of partiality to the House and at 'the same
time to treat the message with a beconiing
respect. It is presumed that no opinion
will be expressed by the Committee, and
that the subject will not be acted on by tiie
present Congress.
We are authorized to state, that a lot
of 16s)iag« Cotton received by the -Steam-j
Boat, Henry Shultz, from Charleston, which i
was bought at 12 1-2 cents in that place,!

A worthy gentleman who loved the eha
racijn - qf La Payette, named his son after
iiiui, and, thijs recorded the birth in the
Shniiy' Register, “ Jlurkis Delijit .was
brn, &c.”
It would seem from the following para
graph, that tins country must look out in
case of another war with Great-Britain, or
our seventy-fours, and our steam frigate will
soon be hors ih combat. We must reclaim
Mr. Perkins, this modern Achilles who
will not save or serve the Greeks.
Chas. Courier.
“ The Greek Committee in London have
been very anxious to obtain a few of Mr.
Perkins’ steam cannon, for the purpose of
enabling the Greeks to hasten the surrender
of Patras, and the other fortresses in
Greece which are held by the Turks ; but
they were prevented from obtaining them
by a treaty between vr. Perkins and the
Ministry, for the exclusive right to these
tremendous engines of destruction.”
Extensive. Fire in Columbia, >S'. C. —We
have obtained the following particulars of a
destructive fire which broke out in Columbia,
on lust Saturday night, at eight o’clock, from
a gentleman who arrived in the stagfc on
Monday evening. The mail being closed
before the fire commenced, furnishes noth
ing on tin* subject.
Ihe ffames were discovered issuing from
Hatter & Co’s store, in the square fronting
Ricluydson-street, and before thev could be
got under, consumed the entire square with
the exception oP&'few houses, winch were
saved by blowing up three unoccupied tene
ments, the property of Dr. Harris. Ihe
buildings consumed were all of wood and
were situated in the most populous and com
mercial part of the I’ow.tr; By the great
exertions of the citizens, and particularly of
the students of the College, the fire was ar
rested in two hours after nt commenced.—
she number of buildings destroyed amount
ed to fifteen, exclusive of out houses, back
stores, &c. It is supposed that the fire ori
ginated by a candle being left in Halter &
Co’s, store.
O ir informant left Columbia at so short a
lime iibcr the lire, that he can form no esti
mate of the extent of the loss.
Ihe following are the names of the prin
cipal sufferers, with the exception of those
ol a few small grocers ; Hatter Co. dry
igoods store ; J. ty J, S. Flemming, grocery ;
I Miller & Poole, shoe store ; Pierce tinman ;
j Snowden &, Co. drv good store; Longenutte
