■ Savannah, February 8.
A The three story brick house in Brough
.flb ton-street, opposite Lego’s Hall, belonging
to the estate ot Col. Steele White, was
m yesterday morning, about 11 o’clock discov
■ ered to be on fire—and was with consi-
K derable difficulty extinguished. No person
resided in the house, and there cannot be a
W doubt that it was produced by an incendia
■ ry. The combustible materials had been
H placed within a drawer in a closet, on the
Sk second story, and close to the partition be-
M tween the front and back rooms, between
the lathing of which it had ascended. A
negro boy a runaway, is suspected as the
author. Tiie damage is estimated at six
■ hundred dollars. We believe the house is
K Insured by the Charleston Marine and Fire
Insurance Company.

FLORIDA.
f The Governor of Florida, congratulates
B the legislature in assembling, for the first
time, at the new seat of government. He
f states that a treaty has been concluded with
Q the Florida Indians, by which, with the ex
'ception of a few tracts, the whole country
B is surrendered—that they are all concentra
f ted in the peninsula between the Atlantic
I and the Gulf Stream, by which the safety
f of 'cavellers is amply insured—that a re
jS form in the judici try becomes todispensa
r ble, and likewise a general revision of the
I Statutes. Preparations are making to lay
1 out. a new road between Pensacola and St.
W j Augustine, for which purpose, we umler
-2 stand, twenty-throe thousand dollars have
been appropiiated by Congress. His ex
cellency says—
f “ Until lately no part of North America
i j waft so little known as the interior of this
V country. Visitors who had taken a Iran si
* cut view of the extremes of East and West
ly Florida, had pronounced it a bank of sand,
J not worth the money paid for it. Ignor
ance is commonly the cause of misrepre
i , sentation. Now, it is believed by many,
/ that Louisiana has not more valuable land
than this I’erritory. The lands on the banks
of tiie A|rpalatchicola river are as fertile as
the banks of the Mississippi, and the cli
i , mate is belter adapted to the culture of su
gar and sea island cotton. The greater
part of the country between Suwanee and
j Appalatchicola rivers, is extremely rich and
I ! valuable, and will sustain a population of
many thousand souls, while the rich lands
of Alachua, west of the Appalatchicola,
will unquestionably render Florida, at no
distant period, a rich and powerful State.
“ The bold and navigable rivers which
run through our territory will be of more
value than mines of gold. Besides the ri
vers already mentioned,'several others are
equally navigable. The St. John’s can be
ascended by vessels of considerable bur
v then for 160 or 170 miles ; the Ocklucky is
J navigable for large boats, as are also the St.
Marks and' Wakulla rivers. The Cliocta
watchie and Escambia rivers are now navi
gated into the State of Alabama. A few
/years will demonstrate the value of Flori
da to the United States, and thousands of
Southern planters will realize in tins coun
try that wealth for which hitherto they have
toiled without success.” [fVash. Gaz.

The discovery of the blood-stained arti
cles of clothing, which we mentioned yes
terday has naturally excited considerable en
quiry. The initials upon (be shirt, agree
with those of Mr. Akchieai.u Graham, a
planter from Camden County, who sold a
lot of cotton in this city for SIOG, last week
and proceeded with it, on Thursday evening
for Effingham and Bulloch Counties. Ap
prehensions are entertained, from this cir
cumstance, that he may be the unfortunate
owner of the articles found, and who has
been murdered. Geo.
