effects of our labour. Under the head of
, Internal Improvements, we would include t
the condition of Jails and Court-Houses, s
many of which ai, - e in so ruinous a state, as j
to be wholly unfit for use, while some of the
Counties have not funds to appropriate in
repairing them. Our sister State has a good
regulation upon this subject, and it might 1
be fortunate if something like it were in- f
; flprjj>ed in our own Code. t
i . . Many important statutes need amend
ment or alteration. Why should not the
Judges be compelled to report once a year 1
any defects which, in the course of prac- 1
tice may be discovered in the Laws ? There r
is a provision of this kind in relation to the |
criminal law, which it is believed has re- S
suited in making our penal code more per
fect. f,
Upon these hints we may at some future $
moment enlarge ; it will suffice for the <
present to express the hope that the ap- ,
preaching General Assembly may be gov- {
erned by wisdom and a single view towards \
the general good, and not by the Ogreish I
indicated in the lines from the j
dairy-tale at the head of our article.

Georgia Sugar. —We have just seen a
sample of Sugar, from Montgomery County,
in this state, which appears to be of as fine
a quality as the best New-Orleans Sugar.
We understand, that it is cultivated on the

tic consumption. It may be seen at this

" We are gratified to learn,” (says the
Telescope,) “ that a company has
been formed in the city of New-York, headed
by an enterprising gentleman of capital, to
establish Iron Works on a large scale in
Soulh-Carolina, with a view of manufactur
ing iron for the northern market. Extensive
• purchases have been made on Broad river,
including the works of Jacob Stroup, Esq. of
1 York district, where the principal works will
I be located. The iron can be transported to
I Charleston by boats descending Broad Riv-
I er, passing through four canals, on which
I there are 26 locks. The falls passed by
I these locks .•/mount to 202 feet. We hail
I this enterprise as promising great benefit to
I our state, and as evidencing the utility of
Rsptjur internal improvements. We most hear
■ oly wish all engaged in it full and complete
W success.”

b The Court of Appeals at Columbia, S. C.
p will set on the second Monday in January
next. The dockets for the different circuits
will then be called in the same order, as at
j the last meeting of the appellate Judges.
We have accounts from Kentucky which
state that the two Courts have commenced
| their opposition sittings at Frankfort. This
I circumstance is the cause of great perplexity
[ to individuals who have cases fur hoaring. ,
I One of these Courts must be ultimately sus-
I tained : and the decisions of the other will
I then be rendered null and inoperative. In
I this case, who is to refund the suitors the mo-
I ney which may have been advanced for no
I beneficial purpose, and who can give a re
compense for the dreadful state of anxiety
and doubt which must be the necessary re
sult of the present unsettled aspect of the
judiciary system ?

maker, being in the act of supply ing the fire
with wood at the moment, was scalded so
badiir, that he died next morning about one
