Savannah, September 4.—The state
ment made in the New York Herald to
day, to the effect that the yeHow Fever
exists in this city, has called forth
following from Mayor Screven:
“ I learn that the New York Herald of
this morning reports the existence of the
yellow fever in Savannah. The state
ment js wholly without foundation.
There is not now, nor has there been, any
yellow fever in Savannah, the present
year, and the city is free.’ of disease of
any kind and healthier than any previous
year. A reti action of the statement of the
Herald, so fp" as Savannah is conccned
is requested.

er is fine, and the general opinion is that
the fever is dying out. The Board of
Health reports three deaths for the two
days ending at noon to-day.
Later—There were four deaths from
the fever during the twenty-four hours
ending at noon to-day.
San Francisco, September 4.—The
steamer Albion, from Australia, is a week
over due.
The Indian tronbles in South California
are over. The hostile chiefs have agreed
with the commissioner to submit the
questions to the Vate tribe.
Mobile, September 4.—General crop
accounts received by responsible mer
chants say the cotton prospect in Ala
bama and Mississippi is discouraging.
A drought has existed in some loca lilies
and too much rain in others. The crop
is also suffering from the worm. Plan
ters are holding back their cotton for
higher prices. * -■ * '

Rev. Geo, C. Irall, Rector of Emanuel
Church, has adopted the uew prayer
book and withdrawn from Bishop Pot
ter’s Diocese.
Officer Wilde, of Newark, was fatally
injured by a gang of rowdies.
.There was afire at Rahway, N. J. Loss

J-G. Hymen fc, lawyer and President of
the Hercules Life Insurance Company,
C. J. Dankle, Mrs.Georgianua Dankle aud
J. S. Talmadge were arrested on Satur
day by the United States Deputy Mar
shal, on the charge of making false rep
resentations with reference to the prop
erty of certain bondsmen of Dankle in
the suit of the United States against him
to recover a forfeiture for renewing an
illicit distillery. °
To-day Commissioner Davenport held
Rymert in a bond of $15,000, and Tal
madge and Mr. and Mrs. Dankle in $10 -
000 each. ' ’
The Mayor of Savannah has telegraph
ed that there has been no yellow fever in
that city this year.
The Tribune says: “The alacrity with
which the French have paid up the whole
of the indenmity due on or before the
first of May is explained by our Berlin
correspondent. It appears that the ne
gotiations for the evacuation of France
by the Germans were complicated by the
question of admitting German manufac-
nires into France, free of duty, after
September first, at which date the ar
rangements agieed upon for passing such
goods duty free expired. The French
were offered a speedier withdrawal of
troo**5 if these privileges to the Germans
were continued; but they are nowin a
condition to demand the evacuation, as a
right, under the treaty of Frankfort.
Washington, September 4.—The Pre
sident has pardoned Alfred Foster, of
Brooklyn, who was convicted of selling
unstamped segars, °

an order forbidding the whites to settle
in the Cherokee conntiy.

The baiometer bas fallen very generally
dnnng the day east of the Rocky Moun
tains and especially on the Gulf and over
he lakes; but the highest pressure re
mains central in Delaware. The temper
ature has risen decidedly from Missouri
to Aew Icork and northward. Fresh
southwesterly winds have prevailed at
most stations in this region; northeasterly
on the Gulf coast Smoky and hazy
weather bas continued from eastern Mich-
lgan to the middle Atlantic. Clouds and
right rain on the immediate coast from
Louisianato Florida, and local rains have
fallen in Wisconsin, but elsewhere clear
weather is reported.
London, September 4.—Smithe, a
member of Parliament, presided at the
Phoenix Park meeting. In sight of
which followed the participants of the |
meeting attacking the police, fifty police
were injured. The police were rein
forced and many arrests were made.
The Times has a Versailles dispatch
saying tnat there will be no adjournment
of the Assembly until the Germans evac
uate the four departments surrounding
Paris.
MaDy cases of cholera are at Dantzic,
Elbing, Coblentz, Altona, Leipsic and
Vienna.
A bark was capsized near the English
coast and all were lost. A brig was cap
sized off Shields, and all on board were
lost.
Queen Victoria is confined to the house.
A general strike of the coal miners of
Northumberland, for higher wages, is
imminent.
A fishing schooner foundered in Pent-
landfrith, and five persons were lost.
A railroad accident has occurred in the
North of France. Ten were killed, and
an immense number wounded.
^Gladstone, in a speech delivered at
Whilley Saturday, expressed joy that
Englishmen can now look upon Ameri
cans as friends, and said: “We may now
indulge in the hope that all controversies
between the two people are settled.
A mass meeting of Engineers was held
at Newcastle-on-Tyne last Saturday, at
tended by fiilly 8,000 persons, at which
it was determined to insist upon an ar
rangement of the time of labor at nine
hours a day, for six days in the week, or
fifty-four hours a week in all.
A special dispatch to the Standard from
Spain says, “the progress of King Ama
deus, from Albacete to Valencia, was one
continued oration.”
The Herald’s special correspondent at
Albacete, Spain, telegraphs as follows:
“By invitation I accompany the King on
a three weeks’ journey through the Pro
vinces. We started Saturday morning,
reaching Albacete at night. We stopped
at thirty-six stations and the King was
received with tremendous enthusiasm.
