As will be seen by notice
published elsewhere in this pa.
per, a change has been made;
and we here state that this
change must be productive of
money. Every man who owes
a cent will find his account
with Messrs. Blance & King,
and their instructions are to
collect without delay. Gen
tlemen, I will remain in town
a short time, and the money
most come. J. T. Gibson.

BROKE JAIL! t I
Christopher Columbus Turbeville
on the Wing Again.
Christopher Columbus TurbeviHo,
who killed Cicero Surratt in this
county nearly two years ago, and
who was under sentence for 10 years
in the chain gang, broke jail at this
place last Tuesday night, and to use
the language of a certain poetical
attorney, is now “as free as the
zephyrs which play around his
mountain home.”
The prisoner’s case had been car
ried to the Supreme Court, aud the
judgment of the Court below affirm
ed, and he was to have been resen-
tonced Wednesday morning. Thus
it will be seen that his escape was in
the very niche of time. The bird
bus ilown, and the stern mandate of
the law is in consequence indefinite
ly postponed.
1IOW HE ESCAPED.
Turbeville and Henry May occu
pied the same room and slept on the
same bed. From this room they had
access to the hall. In one of the east
rooms there was a hole iu the wall,
through which a prisoner had made
his escape on a former occasion. 13y
some means, unknown to the jailer,
Turbeville unlocked the door leading
from the hall into that room, made
a rope of blankets lorn up and plait
ed together, crawled through the
hole in the wall and by means of the
rope descended to the ground.
May says he does not know when
Turbeville left, and on awaking
Wednesday morning and finding
him gone, ho at once informed the
jailer.
This is the whole story, and while
wo do not in toto excuse Mr. Clem
ents, we do not think that blame aU
tache8 to him to the extent some are
inclined to make it appear. This
lesson will serve to mako him moro
watchful in the future, and keep a
strict watch over that clues of crimi
nals.
Up to this writing nothing has
been heard of Turbeville, and vie
opine he is wending his way toward^
the Block HiHerorthe borders of
Mexico.
Van Davis was sent out with
a warrant to arrest Wiley Hogg, col
ored, the other day. Finding Wiley,
Van made known his business, aud
iu company with his prisoner started
back to town. When they had pro
ceeded a little way, Wiley concluded
he would go no farther, and without
hesitation acquainted Van with his
determination. Van insisted in a
positivo sort of way, and taking hold
of Wiley, endeavored to force him
forward; whereupon Wiley tapped
Van over aud retired in good order.
Van returned to town a sadder and
much more astonished man than
wheu he left. He insists that Wiley
treated him real Ilogg-ish. We
think so too.

We had a delightful fall of

We received a call from Mr.
Tom Ouyler, of Rome, yesterday.—
He reported things “right side up”
in the Mountain City.
PISTOL PRACTICE.
An Officer of the Law Defied by a
Bold and Daring Criminal.
•Sheriff Clements having heard re
cently that Bill King, colored, an
absconding criminal, was using in
the vicinity of Mr. G. W. Lindsay’s,
over in tho coaling, and being very
desirous of arresting him, he placed
the warrant in Mr. Lindsay’s hands,
with instructions to keep a lookout,
and if opportunity offered to arrest
his black majesty.
One night last week Mr. Lindsay
walked in on William and demanded
of him that he surrender. Instead
of complying with the officer’s com
mand, Bill arose from tho bed on
which ho was lying with a pistol in
his hand, and made some demonstra
tions towards shooting. Mr. Lind
say had a pistol, also, and when Bill
cahie at him in that manner lie at
once pulled down on him, the ball
taking effect in Bill’s right hand.—
Bill concluded that the officer meant
business, and that ho had better take
to his heels. Accordingly he lit out,
but before lie was out of lango 6f
the pistol Mr. Lindsay shot him
again, the ball this time taking effect
in tho fleshy part of one of his arms.
But Bill did not stop. On the con
trary lie continued to run, and for
aught we know is running yet.
Tho Sheriff, Mr. E. W. Clementp,
desires us to say in this connection
that he will pay a liberal reward for
the apprehension and delivery of this
troop, whose intention doubtless was
to fight nobly, but whose ju-art failed
him. He is a great rascal, aiid all
good people, white and black, should
do all in their power to assist the
officers of the law in arresting and
bringing him to justice.

The case of ‘‘The State vs.

thorough investigation the jury re
turned a verdict of guilty. Where
upon his honor, Judge Underwood,
sentenced Perry to the penitentiary
for the term of seven years.
