Since the expiration of the origi- nal sewing machine patents, imita tions of certain machines have been made and sold at low prices, and the public are cautioned by the makers of genuine machines to “beware of counterfeits.” Now it is it noticea ble fact that the machines which have been imitated are such as can he cheaply made, and which will for a short time do passable sewing. It may also he noticed that no bogus, spurious counterfeit Wheeler A Wil son ISewing Machines arc offered for sale, and for this reason, it would coot nearly a* ro^tclyto make thor oughly good and serviceable machines in a small way as the Wheeler fc Wil son Manufacturing Company ask for their machines at retail. No capi talist has been tempted to invest enough money in the precarious ven ture, ami it is not likely that any will attempt it. Second-hand Wheeler & Wilson Muchinrs are sold in a small way by unprincipled dealers as new, but even this trade is curtailed by the offer of such machines at low er prices at the Company’s offices. The Colossal Bmize Statue of Vic tory which stands in the Park, at Lowell, before the tomb of the first soldiers that fell jn the revolution, is a lasting and beautiful tribute of art. It is one of the tiist objects sought by strangers visiting our sister city, which indeed m ny visit purposely to see this ilegat t object of high art. It wus obtained from the King of Bavaria by Dr. J. C. Ayer, to whom His Majesty wa especially gracious in acknowledgment of what his rem edies are repute I to have done for the suffering si< k. It was donated by the Doctor o th§ City of Lowell as a permanent ted speaking emblem of the victories both of Science and Arms.—Hagersivwn [Mil.) Press. The warm Spell in January is now on hand. The farmers are taking advantage of it, and sowing oats when the land is dry, and working the public mails when wet. Mr. N, B. Anderson will soon start, his Government still it the place of the one burnt sometime ago. The authorities are thoroughly ditching the public square in Hock- mart now, which is a great benefit to the place. Mr. S. K. Ilogne’sschool commen ces the first Monday in February. The ladies and young men of this place are to give a concert at tho Academy on Friday night the 7th of February, which from the parties concerned, promises to bo a good thing. The proceeds to goto finish ing the Baptist church. Mr. W. Kendrick and family will start for Texas in a few days. Miss Trawiotc of Cedartown, is on a visit to friends here. We regret to learn that Hardy Taut formerly of this county, now o Paul ding county, died very suddenly a few days tlgo. His family have our sympathy. The contested election case be tween J. M. Arrington and Robert II. Wheeler lor the Tax Receiver place resulted according to th«coun giving J. M. Arrington thirty-om votes majority. The proceedings nr ere this before the Governor of tli {Stale for h is decision, that decisioi will be known in a lew days. But let him decide as he may, we would like to suy in this connection, being one ot the presiding officers in the contest, that wo put ourselves to some trouble to learn all we could about the illegal vote of Polk oounty. We hear it suggested that in cons- quence of the contest, it will cause some i trouble in the near future. Wo do ! not think it should. \\ e found some | two hundred and sixty of that char- | deter of votes, nud as fyr us we could i learn the greater part of those voting j without paying their taxes, did it. under some misapprehension; some had urmngem n nt8 made that th»v thought their taxes were paid; others from the fact they did not think it illegal, and some because they did not know any better. We find that n great many of our best men are in that lilt, that wc think would scorn to do a dishonest act, and taking the whole matter into consideration, we are disposed and we think others should do so also, to throw the man tle of charity over th« foibles of any and all in said list. A great many i wc are satisfied have committed no I crime, for we consider there is no crimo unless it is done wilfully and maliciously and we see none mani fested in any of them* Clip Kates.
