not ncLiiully unlady like, was far too
free uml unconstrained to suit hor
aunt’s old-fashioBcd aud rather narrow
minded ideas of propriety, and tho lat
ter had begged hor minister to give the
young lady some wholosotno advice on
tho subject. Aftor promising to com
ply, Mr. Thornton had hocomo moro
and moro oonsoious that ho had placed
klmsnlf in u very awkward position, and
that the only result likoly to ouhiio
from this undertaking to ndvise Miss
Hallowed was a groat deal of displeas-
nro on her part. And though unwilling
to give way to what he feared might ho
a ntero want of moral oonrago, ho was
a good deal omharrtiMHcd when the time
canto for tho duty to ho performed.
His emharroHsmont was hy no means
It-Hsuiicd when Miss Hallowed eamo
into the room, lookiug really lovely in
her handsome, dark-blue morning-dross,
which enhanced, hy contrast, the
hrightnoHH of her blonde complexion
and beautiful ’ light hair. Tho truth
was, she had made up her mind sorno
days before that the minister was “ tho
ouly civilized man in the whole stupid
little town," and had taken soma pains
that morning to uppsar nt hor host bo
foro him.
Hho greeted him very cordially, and,
as ho noticed how frank nnd pfoasant
hor manner really was, ho was troubled
hy u still groator uneasiness about loo-
birring her on that point. But aftor
somo preliminary conversation—during
whioh sho noticed thut he was very
nervous and ill at oaso—ho made a do-
terrainod effort to get through with his
(lisaffrcrnbln task.
“Miss Hallowed," he said, “lam
sure you know what a high regard 1
fool for you, and Itow vory much inter
ested I have become in you since you
have boon lioro.”
“ I’m very glad, indeed, that you like
me so much, Mr. Thornton," she an
swered, witli a charming smile.
He found it impossible to say any
thing more at Unit, and there was an
awkward pause. Then, under a hopho
.hat something mast bo said, and not
knowing exactly what it was to bo, ho
wont on in a strain that was rather
stronger than tho facts of tho ca
warranted.
“ I fool as if I woro moro than
friend to you," ho said. “Indeod, I
haven't scon anybody for a long time
who exoited my intorost as you havo
done."
Here there was another pause, during
which ho became more embarrassed
than ever, while his companion begun
to entertain a certain idea about his
menuing.
“Iwunttoask you something," he
said finally, in u hesitating wuy, “ '*
afraid you’ll think it very strange in
to suy such a thing to you whan I’vo
only known yon a few weeks ; but I
think you will I moan, I hope '*
Here he cumo to a dead stop and
entirely ut a loss how to go on.
But boforo he could put an end to his
hesitation tho lady herself suddenly
brought matters to a climax in a way
that put a very different aspect on tl
affuir.
“Mr. Thornton," sho said, with
manner in which kind feeling was cor
bined with decisive firmness, “ I think
I know what you waut to Bay to mo,
aud I’m suro it will ho bolter to stop
you boforo you say it. I boliovo yon
wore going to nek too to marry you. I
can always esteem and honor you vory
much ; but it would bo impossible for
me to be moro than your frtond, ovon if
I. wished to, for I’ll tell you frankly
that I’m engaged to somo one olso."
If Miss Hallowell had suddenly spo
ken to him in pure Banseript *r the
choicest Iroquois, Mr. Thornton could
not have boon moro astounded. ITo sat
for u few moments iu silent amazement.
But tho uttor ridioulousnoRH of the
thiug soon eamo to hitu in its full foroo,
and, without any premonitory symp
toms. ho fell into n violent paroxysm of
laughter.- His efforts to oontrol him
self woro quito uroIohr, and one or two
faint attempts whioh lie made to spoak
wore instantly smothered in a froah
outburst.
Miss Hallowed's astonishment was. at
first, as groat as his had been. Bho,
too, noon recovered from that fooling ;
but, iustead of being succeeded by
mirth, it was followed, in her ouro, by
a passionate fit of nuger. With a look
of incfiabla scorn she got up, walked
out of tho parlor, and went straight to
her own room. Mr. Thornton left tho
house fooling unable to malto any ex
plauution nt that time. In the mean
time Mins Hallowoll iudulgod in Humor
ous rather wild plans for being revongod

treated hot- so shnn.ofully in roturn for
hor consideration nnd kindness. But
at last, she found relief in a flood of
tears, and soon afterward was hnlf-iu-
olinod to laugh nt tho wbolo affair ltor-
solf.
She returned to tho oity a fow days
after this little opisodo ; and ono morn
ing, when she had been at homo nearly
a week, sho received tho following note:

individual who had been standing by

Two or three of the book-keepers
